We can expect new releases this year, according

to this article.

Not that thrilled about his music being used for musicals or circus acts, though.

What do you think?

The vault's about the only hope we have and it's loaded with great material.

The sooner the better.

Makes me think of what Spike Lee said about making a movie of Prince's life (page 3).

-

I'm not very warm to the idea of a Prince Broadway show. Cirque Du Soleil + P seems cool at a glance, but I'm not sure about when put into practice. hmmm I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in how they'd be executed.

Understandably, they are thinking money and the Cirque shows make a pile for MJs estate. I don't know if it could work for P though.

Cirque Du Soliel (sp?) isn't just any old circus, though -- it's not even really a 'circus' at all in the traditional sense.

I've seen their performances, and they're actually really awesome. Look 'em up on youtube. I think Prince would probably have liked them.

That's what I was thinking. It's not "a circus act".

Ultimately the aim is to make money. This seems the most sensible way to go. Rather than "Kiss" showing up in every makeup advert on TV.

The commercialisation of his music is sadly inevitable - as is his likeness.

-

Too many grubby businessman eager to make a buck

-

This does not sit well with me...as I always respected Prince's unique approach to the bastardisation of his music/image...in a capitalist world

-

I am very skeptikal over his legacy going forward sigh

Prince was commercialized during the Purple Rain era so I'm sure I don't think he'd mind his music being mainstream again.

I won't be going to a Cirque show or anything else like that. Didn't do it for MJ and I've never been to one of his concerts... But, I have been to a lot of Prince concerts...and nothing will ever replace that experience. Just...no.

As far as his integrity, I don't think it matters anymore. He maintained his artistic vision and integrity throughout his life and nothing can change that now. The book has closed on that. But going forward, it doesn't matter what they do with it. I don't even really mind it within reason; it will keep him present and discoverable for younger listeners. The same way those show and new releases keep MJ and Elvis and The Beatles from being written off into history. Nothing they do will reflect on Prince as an artist. He did keep control of that his entire life. And it doesn't even seem like P cared that much what happened after he was no longer here. He said as much about the vault and leaving no will showed his indifference.

Prince commercialised himself/music on his terms.

-

Purple Rain etc. did not result in using his music to sell cars (LRC), lipstick (Kiss), Budweiser (Party Up), E-Harmony (Beautiful Girl), De Beers (Diamons & Pearls) etc...

-

I fear the above will become commonplace...which isn't appealing for me

-

And certainly not a global franchise musical ala "Queen" or "Thriller Live"

-

Yes, I agree Prince was commercial...but not the tackiness of the above.

-

But as Renfield just said, clearly if Prince didn't leave a Will - then he didn't give a toss about his legacy

-

I just hope they treat the more invested fans with some valuable material from the vault and not continual rehash/repackaged material we already have

-

So, I am still somewhat cynical, although will be happy if it is misplaced shrug

How prepared are we all for all the other things that will come with this innevitable and necessary monetisation? New official Facebook, Twitter, Website(s)? Heavier promotion etc.

Blame Prince. He didn't leave a will. And that tax bill is going to be due very soon.

I guess we can all now look fondly on the past when Prince was our own little private joy and we'd get so mad the world didn't "really" know or appreciate him enough.

We can all say we loved him when it wasn't "profitable" to do so. I got so much shit for being such a huge Prince fan. Now everyone is like oh I love Prince. Oh whatever. It's ok though. I hope everyone loves him.
Surprise, surprise.

it's weak of me as a fan to accept distribution/commercialization of prince's music, but it feels inevitable given the circumstances of his passing. plus, i have to admit i'm always looking forward to new prince releases

I totally get this... going back to being teased at school in the 80s - you must be gay to like Prince etc...

-

Although this "fashionable" interest in Prince will peter-out by next year after the December 2016 review of fallen stars.

-

My concern is that outside of "The Hits", there will not be a huuuge apetite for his unreleased music - which could result in limited releases for the likes of us

-

I have promoted Prince for 30yrs to all that have crossed my path...and as the years have gone by, most have stuck to the hits (and the occassional obscurity) despite the amount of material/boots I have shared.

-

The main reason I believe Prince still garnered interest was due to his live shows...which sadly (and I still can't believe it) are no more!

-

So my hope is that the custodians offer us something more than adverts/musicals/rehash greatest hits.

-

But we only have to look at what was played in the tributes in April to see where the market is...apart from Santana's thoughtful "Last December"...whilst the rest were appreciated, it was standard stuff

-

Oh dear...I a a bleak brother!!!

It's actually crossed my mind a few times, because I did see the Cirque De Soleil event for Michael Jackson, and it was spectacular! I am very happy I got to see this artisitic portrayal and attend an event among fellow fans to share in the memory and the music together, so I for one would attend one for Prince in a heartbeat. Also, there was a ballet/production called Love Lies Bleeding, done for Elton John, how his music inspires, and a walk through the music from a fans point of view - such an incredible production. I actually would love so much if something came about like this for Prince. I want to see how his music inspires various artistic platforms. Hopefully if some smaller productions pick up on the idea, they will do it with a portion going to one of the causes he supported - I think that would be the best way to do something like that.

Just like there is a Prince Tribute Night here in Vancouver and a dozen local bands are going to play the music that inspired them as musicians, the tickets are a modest $10-20 and 100% are funds raised for local youth initiatives. The best way to honour his legacy and share in the memories his music has brought to all of us.

I really dont care what they do with is music to make a buck. As long as some of that buck goes towards releasing vault stuff to his fanbase, I will be fine with any commercial sell outs.

Cirque de Soleil is not just a circus act. I've never seen their shows, but I'd love to and they are probably capable of putting together a very decent tribute show.

A musical, OTOH.. Please, no..

Unreleased stuff to hit broadway???? LOL that is lame. Unfortunately it says nothing about his actual unreleased music hitting the wrecka stows!

There are a TON of articles this morning about plans for content from the vault. I read yesterday as well about a "theatrical release".

I am a longtime fan and attendee of the Cirque du Soleil tent shows. I use "tent" deliberately to distinguish it from the permanent shows in Orlando, Las Vegas etc. The tent shows are amazing - truly amazing. The music is all performed live by a stellar, top-notch live band. The music, of course, sets the stage for the live acts, which I would never really characterize as "circus-y", though some elements of circus definitely exist. But the live acts and orchestration are, to me, very much in line with how I personally perceive Prince's approach to music. Prince was a ground-breaking artist in his live performances as well as his recordings. Cirque du Soleil, as well, is ground-breaking. If you've seen the tent shows, you come away with a feeling that you've seen something you simply can't get anywhere else (at least I feel that way). To that end, I find the pairing of unreleased Prince material paired with Cirque an exciting and tantalizing prospect. If anyone can do his music justice, Cirque can. Of course, this is dependent on Cirque taking the time to really understand Prince the person in the context of his music.

I, for one, find this so incredibly tantalizing!!

Screw broadway, we need unreleased stuff to hit the wrecka stow.

If this is their 'initial' idea, they need to be fired.

Get Altanta Piano & Mic out people, the last Prince concert ever will sell more than a ridiculous musical. Shoot, they could do both, and even sell the CD at the theater to capture more sales, but a musical alone, and as the first use of vault music? Wow.

If this is seriously their intended direction for the vault, to have broadway and circus acts make their own interpretations of his unrleased music, well, that will annoy the F outta me. Yes, it will work, sure it may be cool, but I want vault stuff on CD, to buy or download from Amazon, etc.

[Edited 6/20/16 11:14am]

I would imagine that their first goal is to monetize the contents of the vault as quickly as possible, so I would further imagine that they will release it for purchase and download sooner than they would do anything else. It only makes Financial sense, and this has quickly turned into a profit venture.
