I just can't get excited about any of it. I think I still have some anger going on about his senseless, untimely death, I don't want to hear anyone else's versions of his material, it will always be second best.

Why do we think Prince would be so opposed to his music being used on broadway or by Cirque du Soliel? Remember Glam Slam Ulysses, the aborted 'I'll Do Anything' score, Misty Copeland's performances, the Joffrey ballet's 'Billboards' with "Thunder"? Prince loved exploring other artistic avenues (especially live theater, musicals, and performance art). We sound like a bunch of stodgy old fans.

I hear this…and totally agree – I am being a right old fuddy-duddy!

-

At the moment though, I (as MissMarySharon) am feeling rather precious about Prince’s music

-

If it was me handling the estate, the first thing I would express to the world, is the release of some Purple Rain deluxe edition (with outtakes) and a Bluray dvd release with a bonus documentary

-

Basically concentrate on his music, which would appeal to both the more invested fan and the casual alike

-

I would give it some time before farming out his music to 3rd party interpretations

-

At this time, I want Prince rather than a theatre/advertising mans product

-

I remember when MJ passed, the first thing that was put out was "This Is It"...which made his hardcore and casual fans happy (I caught it on telly a year later - as I kinda lost touch with MJ after my teens)...and made a shed load of dosh

My moneys on a live release from the piano and mic tour, and possibly a Volume I of vault studio tracks

Because the founder/former owner of Cirque du Soleil is such a bloated-ego control freak that he makes Prince look timid by contrast.

The fact that this has surfaced so quickly is probably due to either one or both of the following: Cirque had already pitched the idea to Prince (if so, the fact that it didn't happen would tell you what you need to know about what Prince thought), and/or McMillan or Koppleman thought of the Michael Jackson and Viva Elvis tribute Cirque shows (the latter closed due to spotty attendance that made it impossible for the MGM Hotel to recoup the gargantuan production costs).

I'm pretty sure Cirque would knock it out of the park. The have done shows for Beatles, Elvis and Michael. I have seen them all and they are a spectacular way to showcase the musical influence of these legends in a night full of melodic memories. I'd recommend having an open mind, you would likely be pleasantly surprised.

ALSO - I would be DOWN with Spike Lee doing a Prince movie. In fact, I would ONLY be down if he was the one doing it because I know he was friends with Prince and would do the man justice. He wouldn't just do a patchwork job. He would do it correctly. IMHO anyway.

As for out for money... they have a hefty tax bill coming up and this whole court situation is going to come with a nice pricetag - lawyers and the whole shebang. They need to generate funds. Plus it's not like Cirque would have a show out tomorrow. Maybe end of the year or next spring/summer ?

Also, I would rather them not rush. Some people want the Vault unloaded like yesterday. I don't. I would rather them make the best decisions for his legacy AND the fans instead of just loading everything for streaming only and be all 'well, there ya go...annnndddd we're done."

Personally I am happy to wait for it. If it meant double discs every other year or a disc a year or WHATEVER, that would make me happier because then there would always be something more. And that makes me feel better than the idea of rapidly reaching the point of none left. I don't ever want to reach a point where there's nothing left. disbelief

Also hoping maybe they'll rerelease some of the earlier concerts that were only televised or only VHS and add some bonus clips - I'm sure there's enough stuff there biggrin

I'm okay with whatever Spike Lee comes up with and completely agree, he is the only one I would trust to do it correctly.

Interesting discussion. I think myself perhaps I'm just not ready yet to be into the idea of others doing his stuff.

I saw Cirque around 2008 at the Albert Hall in London and their show was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, if anyone has seen the two guys who did the aerial straps you'll know what I'm talking about, absolutely breathtaking. However I saw them at the same venue some years later and was very disappointed, as the show had really gone downhill and was full of clowns as opposed to the stunning aerial feats I'd seen before. I gather they now have so many touring sub branches that some of the touring shows get the thin end of the wedge when it comes to the best acts. Not that I'm saying they wouldn't put on something spectacular for Prince. I think as time moves on I'll be more open minded towards hearing his music in different contexts. It just feels too soon at the moment and I worry about commercial interests cheapening his work.

Cirque du Soleil isa amazing. Did n ot see the MJ tribute, but I'm sure they would do a wonderful job tributing Prince. The Question if U came instantly into mind. They have amazing artists and create an increadible ambience that is always touching and beautiful.

I have seen many of the Cirques, and they were awesome. After seeing Love, the 'Beatles Cirque', I walked straight out into the lobby and bought the Love CD. Listened to it all the time... the music sounded fantastic. If they could do something similar with Prince music, I'd go see it. I don't know if I'm buying the songs tho.. I'm sure anything they'd use, I already have.

When it comes to some sort of film project, perhaps something could be put together similar to 'Amy' with behind the scenes, never before seen footage, interviews with Prince and people who worked with him, etc. I'd want to see that. Some sort of biopic, I'd probably see it but be mad at myself for it.

An in depth documentary like "Amy" would be great...but will take a couple of years

-

A biopic would take at least 4yrs from concept/script/casting/filming/release

-

Music in the form of Deluxe editions can be released relatively quickly...

-

I'm sure they already have drafts of the 30th anniversary Purple Rain cd & DVD releases from WB of a couple of years ago waiting in the wings

-

Knock em out for an xmas stocking filler and then a "new" album from the vault on 21st April 2017 with a birthday release in June 2017.

I would love to see something like this. Maybe a per album or era documentary, accompanied by a live show (or something put together from multiple live shows from the era that works as a whole) and the album(s) remastered with some extra tracks and a vault release from the era.

.

The last one will be mostly for the fans, I think, but it works as you can drum up enthousiasm for the whole project, basically minimize marketing money and have something for everyone: a remaster deluxe, a documentary, a liveshow and a vault album.

.

And liner notes by Alan Leeds smile

.

And do it like Spike Lee did his Michael Jackson documentaries. Start with the album past his prime (Bad), then do the artistic highpoint (Off The Wall) and end with the commercial peak (Thriller, still to come).

.

That would mean, for Prince... start with anything from Lovesexy forward, for instance, the piano + microphone tour, then something from For You to 1999 and then the Revolution period (which Sign Of The Times is part of, looking at when it was recorded).

Not that thrilled about his music being used for musicals or circus acts, though.

What do you think?

There are a TON of articles this morning about plans for content from the vault. I read yesterday as well about a "theatrical release".

I am a longtime fan and attendee of the Cirque du Soleil tent shows. I use "tent" deliberately to distinguish it from the permanent shows in Orlando, Las Vegas etc. The tent shows are amazing - truly amazing. The music is all performed live by a stellar, top-notch live band. The music, of course, sets the stage for the live acts, which I would never really characterize as "circus-y", though some elements of circus definitely exist. But the live acts and orchestration are, to me, very much in line with how I personally perceive Prince's approach to music. Prince was a ground-breaking artist in his live performances as well as his recordings. Cirque du Soleil, as well, is ground-breaking. If you've seen the tent shows, you come away with a feeling that you've seen something you simply can't get anywhere else (at least I feel that way). To that end, I find the pairing of unreleased Prince material paired with Cirque an exciting and tantalizing prospect. If anyone can do his music justice, Cirque can. Of course, this is dependent on Cirque taking the time to really understand Prince the person in the context of his music.

I, for one, find this so incredibly tantalizing!!

:yeahthat: Would love to see this. #shutupandtakemymoney lol

Agreed.

-

And business wise Purple Rain deluxe and blu ray with extras on both, is THE catalogue cash cow

-

Both hardcore and casual fans will snap it up

-

WB already did "the work" 2yrs ago

-

As for live performances, I don't think the Piano & Mic tour is broad enough to release to a wide audience and maximise interest in future releases - whilst its appeals are obvious to us at the org.

-

Blu-Ray SOTT or Lovesexy or Syracuse again with extras is the way to go

-

Business wise...why re-invent the wheel when there is a whole new market of buyers that know these great titles but maybe never were inclined to check them out until now - when Prince's passing has made him "fashionable" to those otherwise not necessarily ready/motivated?

After sitting on hold for 20mins to the water company...

Here is an idea... license Prince music as hold music

But only B-Sides and "Non-hits"

Such as...

Strange Relationship

Annastesia

Money Don't Matter 2nite

Then people can hear some decent music and be educated to wider Prince stuff.

I heard a Muzak version of Raspberry Beret in the office where I worked back in the summer of 1988.

I have been wanting to have his songs on Guitar Hero FOREVER!!! THat would be the ultimate edition - Aerosmith is fun to play but I don't think that would compare to Prince smile
