The tragic death of Randy Rhoads did that for me. Ozzy's music suffered in quality after that. .imho.

No, he did not. I find myself in the seemingly unique position of being able to like more than one "artist" at a time.

Yep, from MJ lol

I had always listened to MJ from the time that I was a little kid cause my father used to play some of his music but I didn't become an official fan of his till after he died (yeah how shameful of me right?). I rode the "RIP MJ the greatest ever" wave for a year before I heard Raspberry Beret on satellite radio and saw the iconic last 30 minutes of Purple Rain. I bawled my eyes out at the emotion of the guitar solo and the "Ooooooh ooooh ooh ooh" vocals. After that I didn't care about MJ anymore and he seemed like an ant compared to giant superstar that is Prince in my eyes heart

Nowadays, nobody can beat Prince at anything. I listen to other artists and go and watch their concerts but they just look like shit compared to Prince. I miss the days when singers used to incorporate dancing into their shows/performances. Even then, they still don't top P in my book.

so what made so many of us choose Prince over Michael? I'm not sure if I could even answer that. Maybe it's because Prince seemed cooler, he played instruments and he had teenage interests at least in terms of the opposite sex. Personally, he didn't 'take' me from MJ but if I'm honest I have to say I was a bigger Prince fan, but I can't really tell you why. Both guys were top notch songwriters, both guys had a great sense of fashion, both guys had charisma, although, i don't think Prince had more charisma than Michael. Michael was probably the better singer and dancer, so why did we like Prince more?

Prince was THE artist after 1980. He picked up when P Funk fell off. George put out out a few gems in the 80's but it couldn't compare to what Prince was doing

eek MJ could never do The Beautiful Ones. You need a strong and extremely high voice for that. I prefer Prince's voice. As far as dancing, I think Mj did the same dance moves most of the time. Please don't hate, I've just noticed that a lot lately. Maybe I've just been watching the wrong performances, idk. I still like him though, I'm just tired of people claiming that he was the greatest when he would lipsync. I mean Prince could sing live, dance, run around, and jump off of pianos. There's not a lot of artists who do/did that and did it well like he did. That Grammy's performance of Baby I'm Star is just wow.

I had enjoyed many artists before Prince. Still do. However, I was 31 years experienced when my friend asked if I wanted to see the movie "Purple Rain". Bought the LP and returned the following week to buy Prince's back Catalog. Clerk: " Somebody likes...Prince." I gave him the πŸ˜’ (inner voice) "Ring my purchases & getta clue!" giggle

I'm not hating at all, yes Michael did a lot of the same moves and should have retired the moonwalk but he also did lots of new stuff too. After his death I was astounded and some of his stuff after thriller that I watched, because like you, I thought he just did the same thing over and over again. Neither guy's singing voice is to everyone's taste, some people think Michaels voice was thin as an adult and Prince's falsetto is beautiful to some and grating to others. However, I do believe that Michael in his prime has the edge as a singer and a dancer. Of course he couldn't really play a single instrument and he didn't have the vision to do his albums by himself so in those areas there isn't really a question. Prince didn't have the strongest midrange, he could go down to bass pretty good but he wasn't too spectacular in his midrange, he was a great screamer, maybe the best in rock history with maybe Little Richard beating him. Both great artists and as I said, very lucky to have been a teen during that era.

Very lucky indeed! cool

I agree that both their voices are unique but even then singers with common voices really aren't my thing so lol . Like there's people who love strong, high vocalists like Whitney, Mariah, and Celine but I've never been a huge fan of any of them. I prefer people with voices like Freddie, MJ, and Prince, but nobody really quite has the same style that P had. He could go extremely high to deep low and that's amazing and adds variety which is something that the strong vocalist females don't quite have IMO. To me, they always have the same range in most of their songs. I guess I agree with you that Prince didn't have the strongest midrange. It's still amazing how he could change his voice to fit a specific song though.

Weirdly enough, before i got into Prince (being Erotic City was the only song i knew back then)

I have liked songs from one of his associated artists wayy back since between the ages of 7-12..

Wendy & Lisa (only for their song called 'Light', the last track off from their debut album, surprised to learned about their involvement with P)

.

Tevin Campbell (I remember my mom would jam to Round & Round, I only knew him as Powerline from A Goofy Movie (which also had Rosie Gaines as backup vocals in the song I 2 I). When I saw Graffiti Bridge for the first time and R&R played I freaked out like "nooo fucking way that SONG was in this movie?! that's where it came from!?! holy shit wow)

.

George Clinton (Of course everybody knows who he is lol)

.

Sinead O'Connor (I never knew Nothing Compares 2 U was written by P)

.

Sheila E. (A Glamorous Life...omg i didn't know P wrote that also..)

.

Sheena Easton (I only like about three songs from her which are Morning Train (9 to 5), For Your Eyes Only & A Dream Worth Keeping that was from the movie Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. I had no idea she was involved with songs like Sugarwalls, U Got The Look and Arms of Orion...omg kill me now)

.

and I knew who Carmen Electra was but I never knew she had a music career w/ P like eek

.

yup by then when i got into P, I start to listen to more music from other artists including more of his associated ones thanks to him.

Think of it like this: compare Jackson's Dirty Diana to Prince's Darling Nikki. Which one of those two really makes you believe he's spending the night with this femme fatale?

He never took me away from Michael, I just made room for both, but then did start to prefer Prince more mainly as he did more and there was more music. But Prince did not have Michael's genius with hits and dancing. Michael was a rare treat that came around once every 4 years like the Olympics, whereas Prince was a yearly visitor.

.

My loyalty to MJ was never tested, the day I bought the Cream single, after discovering the video, I also bought Black or White and are sure I was buying Prince and MJ singles at the same time. Ironically it was well into 1992 I bought Dangerous and Diamonds and Pearls.

.

There is room for both of these geniuses in my life, just like there is in heaven, that would be one hell of a concert and like that Michael Trapson song.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

In terms of a pure singer, yes Mike was "better", & more like a trained dancer. BUT Mike was also wack AF at times lol especially when he started knifing that face UP boxed He just got too weird for me. "You ain't bad, you ain't nothin'! YOU AIN'T NOTHINNNN!!!" eek Muthafucka, NO lol

I think every little Black girl wanted to marry MJ at some point growing up. I loved MJ from the J5 days, & I didn't fall off him until the post-Thriller era, that's when I was like whofarted he still put out decent songs, but his overall artistry wasn't authentic - too manufactured, very produced, I could never escape his personal weirdness.

Prince was always intriguing. I remember first seeing him & being like eek biggrin I was a little girl, so I didn't know what to make of him, I just liked him & that pretty voice. He hooked me for life with 1999, but I'd say he "took over" & started to nudge Mike out the way during all the PR hysteria. 1984 was huge for both of them. I don't remember being so crazy about Mike after Thriller, but P soon followed up with ATWIAD & the ever so sexy Parade album & look - THAT was the bomb dropped! Who the FUCK was MJ??!! lol Then SOTT... then Lovesexy - HE WAS NAKED with THAT ASS, game OVERRRRR falloff

P was just raw, sexual, fucking gorgeous, AND a killer musician/all around ARTIST on top of allllllll of that - he was everything MJ couldn't be no matter how hard he tried or how much he spent (though he was adorable before he got crazy w/ surgery/wigs/vitiliBLEACH).

Prince broke new ground with every album, Mike stayed in the R&B lane - nothing wrong with that, good stuff, but nothing blew me away, he was kinda typical (great, but typical, if that makes sense to anyone). You never knew what was coming with P, he was exciting! While MJ just kept going further & further down his weird rabbit hole. It was an easy choice - Prince drew me in & held a bitch TIGHT exclaim

WHY do some folks continue to ridicule vitiligo - an autoimmune condition that is beyond the sufferer's control (and a condition that Jackson legitimately had). It's fucked up beyond belief. It's the same as mocking anyone with any kind of disfiguring illness/condition.

I'm not ridiculing vitiligo. I'm ridiculing MJ for magically having a disease that would cause him to say, "forget these spots, just turn me all White!" while simultaneously trimming his nose off year after year. Its awfully convenient. neutral call it what you want, I'll always be suspect of that series of moves. bananadance

Another one stolen from MJ haha. I was 13 when it happened. Was a HARDCORE MJ fan before I discovered "I wanna be your lover" by chance rummaging through mom's old cassettes. "Diamonds and Pearls" came out the same year and it was a wrap for me. MJ's "Dangerous" came out that same year which was an awesome album and I loved all the videos, but I was also discovering P's back catalog. Somehow MJ just slowly became irrelevant while P was becoming irreplaceable. MJ dropped a few songs I've enjoyed since then. I'll always love MJ as well, but Prince will always be my #1.
Good music makes me happy.

No, he didn't take me from another artist. I listened to a lot of soft rock, hard rock and pop artists on FM radio during the 70s. One day I heard a song called, "I wanna be your lover" and I've been a Prince fan ever since. Prince played so many instruments, his vocal range was phenomenal and his dancing was great, too. I saw PR in the theatre for the first time. I saw Prince in concert when he was in his "humping his guitar" phase (I must admit that was pretty intense, especially for back in the day eek). I have only been a member of this forum for a bit, but a Prince fan for about 38 years. I am now a 60-year-old Grandmother and still dedicated Prince fan. prince
