I was 8 and not much music interested me then, i think i was still collecting toy cars lol I had heard my sister play the Prince album and I Wanna Be Yout Lover was so cool loved it. Then she got the Dirty Mind album and i thought what was this biggrin I got the funk bug and started to appreciate music. And no i did not understand the lyrics when i was 8 and could not understand my sister only playing it when my parents were out. biggrin So to answer your question no. I did like my mum playing Smokey Robinson but Prince was the one for me music wise.

Now that I see MJ listed a lot, I think I can understand the 80s battle between prince and MJ more, it wasn't about the battle between the men themselves it was a battle for the ears, you can love a artist music but when your ears and eyes are just drawn to someone more you can't help it, I love mjs music too, it's just with prince it goes so much deeper I feel the connection more, something I couldn't get from mj

Yes, let's just say that MJ's music was just an initiation to get me into the musical groove, but Prince gave me the whole soul, body and mind experience. smile

Why would you stop listening to one artist just because you discovered another?

Yeah, Michael Jackson.

You know, I just had that moment in my life when I realized Prince was better than Michael Jackson. It wasn't even the easiest thing to take, I had to "just accept it". giggle

Happens all the time in genres like metal, hiphop, techno, jazz, dubstep, industrial and so on. Because the artists that you were listening to eariler just represent "a shallower" take on the musical style they're associated with.

Happened to me with Nine Inch Nails and the like when I started getting into "real industrial music", for example.

MJ (and Jackson 5/Jacksons) were my favorite before I really got hooked by Prince.

Thriller and 1999 were happening at the same time for me, at age 11-12 growing up in Detroit. At that point, they were equal in my book.

1999 was my intro into Prince music, then Purple Rain hit a while later and all bets were off. I worked backward and forward in his discography, so for several years I was getting 2-3 albums a year. It was a great time.

MJ did a lot of Disney-esque projects like Captain EO, E.T. storybook, etc. which I always thought were a bit corny. Victory was kinda a weak effort. We Are The World was "ok".

During those, Prince was doing 1999, Purple Rain, ATWIAD, and Parade. So, there you go.

Now that Im in my 40s and REALLY appreciating (or remeniscing) 80's pop/rock, I have a few regrets not seeing great local Australian bands at their peak.

But back then, it was all about Prince and anything local just wasnt cool enough.

Did you get to see Midnight Oil? They had a hit in Holland with Beds Are Burning, but they never really became big here. I saw them in concert in 1993 and they were pretty good.

Just one example of a band I did not see because I was too busy being Prince no 1 fan. lol

Natural progression:

James Brown until about 1971...........

Pfunk, Ohio Players, Isley Brothers, Kraftwerk, Stevie Wonder, Jacksons, Slave, Dazz band until 1978.

Prince from 1978.........forward.

Mint Condition, Prince & Pfunk for the last 25 years going back & forth.

From age 11-14 I was a big Duran Duran fan. Then Purple Rain happened and it became "Duran Who?"

I "rediscovered" them years later and loved the fact that they played a tribute to Prince when his plane made an emergency landing (the week before he died). Turned out they were massive Prince fans themselves!

Interesting.
I actually discovered Duran when Notorious came out. All because Skin Trade was full on Prince like. Loved it.
After that I was hooked and enjoyed both options during the 90's.
Their All You Need Is Now album proved to me that you CAN still bring out great albums in your late years. Which was something that P struggled to do.

No he did not but what he did do earn my respect as musician and artist, I'm primarily a country music, motown, southern rock, christian & gospel music fan. Prince is one of VERY FEW artists that I enjoy listening to because his sound incorporates a little mix of all but country music in his music. I often hear snippets of southern rock, classic rock, christian, gospel, and even older styles of music such as Frank Sinatra sounding styles in his music. I am curious what he could of done if he had put his mind to doing some country music as he he seems like there isn't a genre of music he could not master just form listening to him.

I agree. And Freddie Mercury/Queen.

.

My dream would be a song that Prince wrote with Steve, Freddie and Prince singing.

The only problem would be that Freddie and Prince would both vie for the spotlight.

In my case no, but in terms of frequency then yes. I still played Duran Duran but not anywhere near as often as before or as often as Prince AND stopped buying their albums until 2004's Astronaught (and went to see them live and they were great so bought up the albums I missed).
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Kinda, but not really. I was just beginning to feel my own way out into the secular music world, so basically everybody was on the same playing level with me. He just took lead because of the variety of sound, it was exciting.

Yes and no. I was getting into music for the first time in 1989, and Richard Marx was my first favorite. But I quickly soaked up current music by other artists like Madonna, Janet, The Cure, Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, Roxette, etc. Prince was in the mix with "Batdance". I was 't conscious of who was outdoing whom per se, though I did keep lists of my favorite songs. My older bro got a CD player that year for Christmas and started collecting Prince albums. Once I heard 1999, there was no turning back. I still like the other music mentioned, and The Cure, Madonna, and Janet remain in my top 10 artists. But Prince emerged as my favorite pretty early on.

Even after his passing, yes I have fallen deeply into his spell. He got me! He was such an amazing talent, a creator and visionary. He wrote songs for every taste so I have not been able to look to another artist that could top him.

Ok, secret confession , I love music , and before prince I had another top artist, but then I started spending more and more time with prince music, and as y'all know that's when he's got you, what he said in my name is prince was true biggrin
My question is did prince steal y'all from another artist?

Yes, from EWF. But Prince made up for that by working with them on 'their' track Superhero. Although it's actually 100% Prince with EWF on backing vocals.

Anyway, I started following him since the end of 1981 and Prince filled the gap completely when EWF disbanded in late 1983.
