No Joni Mitchell either on the list, unless I'm missing her name. It is obviously neither complete, nor to be taken as evidence of a serious rift between him and those not mentioned. Just a list he made at that point in time. Nice. smile

Sam Jennings on Facebook:

"As I remember it, this list was generated for the first "Prince: A Celebration" in 2000 at Paisley Park. This was printed out and put on a music stand to be displayed in the atrium as people did the daily tours. I might be fuzzy on the details, it was 16 years ago wink The list was revised, names were added, Alan Leeds was added back."

Well.. I guess Sam would know. Anyway, we shall all have to wait and see who gets to control Prince's vault music.

Regarding his mom, in an interview one time, Prince had mentioned how his mom didn't like him being a musician because she thought he would be like his dad. So he may have felt she didn't support that part of his life and therefore didn't include her in this list. His dad taught him how to play the piano, so it makes sense he included him.

Aren't they all musically based not everybody who's influenced him. People he's worked with

From Alan Leeds, "Hey folks....don't read into this. I think I had been included by mistake - there are NO management on this list whatsoever, from any era, these are all artists or celebs of some sort."

Where did you find this comment?

Anybody know why Alan Leeds is crossed out?

He's been highly critical of Prince for over a decade. He's altered his tone since Prince's passing to one of barely veiled resentment. Now other, wiser choices have been made regarding Prince's estate he'll likely crawl back up D'Angelo's anus and resume being a bitch.

If Sam is going to inject himself into the fray the why doesn't he provide some proof of this alleged "revised" list?

I notice he left himself some wiggle room by saying he's fuzzy on the details. lol

Or because most of the folks on there are musicians. Alan wasn't. Could be.

Not all of them were musicians. He really had to have second thoughts for him to decide to cross Alan's name off the list. Lol.

Don't over think it. Alan responded to it today, and I posted it earlier in this thread.

No worries, I didn't.

That Alan Leeds bit is pretty funny.

It's clearly just his associates and a few of his most obvious influences. No other big surprises there than maybe The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron. Maybe they were an influence on him around the time when he was working on TRC. Or maybe listening to them was just "trendy" at the time, because I remember listening to them during those days too (and I'm a white guy from Finland).

Yes, but it has Tony M. Clearly auto-correct error. Joni M -- you must mean Tony M!

It's got Eve, Ani DiFranco, even Sam Jennings on too, so clearly it's from 1999/2000-ish. No offense to them, but I doubt they would've featured on such list years later.

I think Prince followed Ani quite closely for many years as she built quite the music empire herself and was never signed to a major label. They are quite similar in music making work ethic, philanthropy, touring, etc. they definitely inspired each other immensely. They are both about the same height as I recall. I don't know the story of how they met up or started working together but Providence is one of my favorite songs. http://www.righteousbabe....s/about-us

It's pretty much solved now when this was from, but regarding Ani, Prince invited her at PP after she played in Mpls in June 99. P had a strong interest in indie artists and Ani was notable for building a whole career by herself, without the help of any label, so that's likely how he spotted her. It is possible though that they had met before but IDK. Maceo was in her band at the time and therefore invited as well. It is likely he and Prince had met before that was the first time they worked together and the first step in him eventually joining the NPG. That day Ani and Mace recorded their parts on their respective tracks on Rave. In return Prince would play on both their respective next albums (that was also the deal with Gwen Stefani).

I was thinking the same thing, it's not a complete list. He's always right up till last year talked about Joni Mitchell. He also did not mention his father

His father is mentioned at the bottom of the second row. One of the last CDs he purchased was Joni Mitchell's "Hejira" on April 16th, i.e. Record Store Day.

Don't play what's there, play what's not there.

I seriously doubt TTD or D'Angelo inspired Prince, as both were/are copycats.
That's like Led Zeppelin coming out and saying that they are musically inspired by Lenny Kravitz falloff

Yes, I know. Generally, my point was a few of the names on here that aren't general influences and band members clearly date the list to 1999-2001.

Lol right on- sorry I get sensitive about my Ani love. Like her music or not, she's pretty bad ass and anytime I can interject with her résumé, I can't resist.

Oh ok.
Yep, he also had the Hejira lp in Christophers room in Under the Cherry Moon.

He expressed sorrow over Joni's health condition last year.
