Watching Purple Rain Again. A few little thoughts:

Prince seems like someone who rarely got angry. Even when he wS supposed to act angry in the movie, he doesn't pull it off very convincingly. I just don't think it was his nature. He seemed to be a calm person. I admire that, especially given that he didn't have it easy as a teenager.

It seems like just yesterday this movie came out and I was a teenager myself. But seeing the models of cars in downtown Minneapolis in the movie makes me realize that it was over 30 years ago. That 30 years has flown by though, and it really was much too fast. How could someone so profound of my own generation be gone? It's been like some sort of magic show or something. It's absolutely unbelievable - still.

It's been a while since I last watched the movie. Too long actually, and that's because I still didn't get to buying it on dvd yet. I still got the VHS but no longer a VCR to play it. wink

What I remember is that Prince's acting wasn't that bad. The scenes in which he had to play with anger came across as very convincing. There's the scene where he slaps Appollonia and the scene where he rushes into his parent's house to look for his dad ("Where are you, motherfucker"): I always found it very convincing. Also the way he portrais the troubled musician looked good.
He might not have been an Al Pacino, but he did a good job imo.

I don't have it on dvd either, but it was on tv the Saturday after he died and I even ended up watching it twice, because the version on Dutch tv was better quality than the Belgian one. Anyway, it still looked fine to me. Dated of course, but what do you expect. Early James Bond films also look dated. And as for the anger, I think the scene where he shouts "answer me, motherfucker!" was convincing enough. Although that may have been despair rather than anger. But what the hell... It stoodvthe test of time. thumbs up!

Shame that I missed it since I live in the Netherlands as well. I could have recorded it. On the other hand: I still need to buy the dvd to complete the collection.

One great segment in the movie btw is the one where he plays the first verses of Purple Rain on piano. I recorded it once on cassette back then, holding a microphone to the tv set and everybody had to be quiet. No need to say the quality was terrible wink

there was an alternative ending filmed where he didn't die. Happier ending.

Christopher died in that movie not Prince so maybe that will help.

Under The Cherry Moon is definitely funny: Prince surely had a funny side.
The scene where he bathing and playing with a rubber duck ('aaahh...fascist!') is hilarious. The movie itself is totally over the top. I guess no one understood that and that may have bern one of the reasons why it's so underrated.

I thought it was a great little movie until he got killed, that was to much. OldFriends4Sale was kind enough to let me know there was an alternate ending one. Why the heck didn't VH1 play that one all things considered. Didn't we go through enough?

VH1 hasn't played Graffti Bridge or Under The Cherry Moon here in my area at all since his passing. They play Purple Rain a couple times a month here.

This was the first for Cherry Moon, Purple Rain yes. Still waiting for Grafitti Bridge, please tell me ahead of time that he doesn't die. I can't take this, it feels to real. If he was alive it wouldn't matter but this was to soon after.

I think he wanted to die in GB, there is what is called a 'hangman' scene' there is a deleted image, where he hangs himself or something, but he did not die in the official GB movie

maybe when UTCM is reissued they will put the deleted scenes in it. But for now there is no alt release.

UTCM is a wonderful movie, you'll watch it again and appreciate what he tried to convey with 'dying 4 love'

Prince wanted the father 2 die in Purple Rain too.

Watched it again recently after not seeing it for some years. Prince was actually kinda shitty toward Appolonia in the movie. But in the interest of the story, he had to end up with the girl in the end.

Actually we don't get all the background from the movie.
In the script (Vanity) was actually a bit manipulative. Morris & Prince had a rivalry and she played the middle. The Kid would see her and Morris together and she wouldn't be upfront about everything until she told the Kid she was going to work with Morris. After the scene where the Kid & Apollonia mess around, Morris is stalking outside later on and she leaves the house(after hearing some troubling things in the house) and runs into Morris. Prince follows them later and sees where she lives and see her with Morris. I think the Kid was pretty into her and nice until that point. Apollonia came across as sweet and innocent, but the background story tells a little more.

I never got that impression.

I did get that he knew how to reign in his anger though.

Thank Old Friends, that sheds some light. I always wished Vanity had hung in there a little longer, she would have given the role more uumph. Wonder if she was salty when the film became wildly successful.
