Prince and The Highway To Hell In recognition to 25:
This is some shit. The man who once gave head to his guitar..the man who once sang about the joys of head and incest..the guy who sang about Darling Nikki and how he wanetd to fuck the taste out of Marshas mouth has made TRC and stopped cursing in general. Progress you say. Maybe, maybe not. But its completely appalling, hilarious, astonishing etc etc..pick one..pick something. Its all of those things. Here is this man whos essence wax and image was bad boy etc. He makes TRC..damn near a christian record (calm down! You know what I mean). Now what if AC/DC decided to make a record in the same vein as TRC? I wonder what their fanbase would do..how they would react. And if they stopped singing Highway to Hell or reworded it to Highway To Heaven with the verses also changed etc. And stopped singing Hells Bells, Big Balls etc. I dont think they would have an audience of their new material. Prince did and does. He got away with it. He isn't king of the hill but that's alright. He has an audience for his change so it seems. And that is something--to be out of the machine and to flip the script as he has done FROM what he has done. I mean damn. Its damn near ridiculous when u get down to it..but somewhere way back when I knew he was going to have to stop that stuff sooner or later and do an Al Green. And for the most part his audience has accepted it. Sure there are some sore spots in the change and some drastic movements...but its testament to the man and his music to be able to still have some sort of audience with this change, maturity etc. AC DC fans wouldn't hang on or stick around if they made such changes imo. Prince got away with it. He has always been spiritual in his music maybe thats why. And maybe folks who aren't informed of everything he has done recently in his music etc have attended the shows for the most part and dont realize his new views or regualation on his past. But I think if they did and to the majority of those who do, that they are still along for the ride. Now that is not testament to only the music or the man but to the audience as well. Adaptability. Its a beautiful thang. Congrats Prince for pulling a hat trick. I bet he's laughing his ass off. hahah very funny...you still aint getting rid of (some of ) us. "Climb in my fur."

Excellent post, Rd!
You have to ask yourself what Prince fans want from his music and correspondingly, what AC / DC fans want from their music?

Anji said: You have to ask yourself what Prince fans want from his music and correspondingly, what AC / DC fans want from their music? This is true. Im sure if AC DC wrote an album of intorpective music and some ballads folks who are fans of theirs would still be able to hang. But if they came up with a new doctrine about their lives and made a record about it I dont think it would be well recieved. Im only using AC/DC as an example. "Climb in my fur."

Before that quote I was about to ask; what's AC/DC's Lovesexy, or their pro-God/spirituality songs throughout their career... This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

If what AC / DC (or whoever) fans want, is just good music, then they will welcome the doctrine change if they are receiving good music. Most fans, however, want both good music and to relate to the ideals / lifestyles of their idols. If they receive good music but find the change in doctrine unacceptable because of the conviction of their own beliefs, then they will probably lose interest in following the music. This is the paradox Prince faces, and I salute him for not only creating the most controversial record of his career, by firmly stating his beliefs, but because of the manner in which he states them. Without a shadow of doubt, The Rainbow Children is one of the most disarmingly beautiful and poetic musical adventures a Prince fan could ever hope to experience. I absolutely can't wait for the new album...

It depends on how you look at God. Some people always dwell on how God is dissapointed with everything you do. Others relish in the fact that God loves them tremendously.

You are absolutely right. AC/DC is one-dimensional (and a crappy dimension at that ) but Prince uses the whole palate.

I guess they want his ideals and lifestyle to mesh with theirs still. As if they ever lived th elife of Princes songs...hell Prince didn't even live the life of most of his songs. . Substitute pretty much any artist with AC/DC for this thread & it's same result.
Not only is it commendable to Prince but the fans who stuck with him. Or maybe he knows just HOW to string us along for the ride...without letting us "come".

I used AC DC because they have a storng image of devil may care attitude ( Highway To hell , Hells Bells, Big Balls etc) that is akin to Princes debauchery style and image...I didnt want to just say if Al Gren had went punk etc or if Areosmith had went classical baroque etc...woops on Aerosmith Or maybe he knows just HOW to string us along for the ride...without letting us "come".

acdc don't give a fuck. that is what makes them great. of course neither did Prince when he first surfaced and that is what brought us those great albums. i don't give a fuck either cos giving is free, and my fucks cost..lol..
i love acdc cos they are, what they are, a loud ass rock and roll band. if u listen to the prince outtake loving you, it sounds like an Ac Dc demo. i have been a fan of acdc for many years and would have loved to see a colabo. maybe Prince wailing on the guitar to back in black, or angus strutting out across the stage, molesting the guitar to peach or the ride... dayum.. it will never happen, or at least we'll never hear about it.. apparently steve vai and ozzy have made trips to the park to play and converse with P and those outtakes would be the shit! one day god forbid when P passes, mani will get the rights to his stuff, get broke and sell it for peanuts... don't know about y'all, but i've seen the future, and i'm savin my peanuts...lol

actually i think a lot of folks don't know about prince's conversion to the JW religion.
i mentioned it to someone who calls himself a fan (he does not go out of his way to check websites like this one) and his reaction was one of utter disbelief. "prince?! a jehovah's witness? you gotta be shitting me!!! PRINCE!!???" he laughed in my face when i told him about the cussing, no dancers, larry and tina, etc. i think prince's audience don't make a big deal of his religious content because most of the time people simply listen to the music and not to his words. he'll always kick musical ass, but i do believe his fan base is changing because of his changes
