Prince socially awkward

I heard the lead singer of the group Train on Howard stern. Train is an amazing band and they do two Prince songs in concert now as tribute to him.
The lead singer was telling a story about how Prince didn't know how to end relationships ( revolution anyone?). Someone the singer knew worked as a sound engineer for Prince and said the two weeks he worked with him were the most amazing two weeks of his life..until the last day. He was leaving PP In a couple of hours and Prince was listening to some tracks and asked the guy what speed he recorded them at. The guy answered and Princ
Said thanks for ruining my
Songs get out of here....so Prince loved everything the guy was doing but had to pick a fight instead
Of saying goodbye. I can't help but imagine that Prince was very quirky when it came to dealing with people.

He was a Gemini. They do that kind of stuff LOL. I watched a YouTube of Shameless Maya (I believe that was her name) who did the photography for Art Official Age. She said they met a few times and did an entire photo shoot in his house. Then, one day, he randomly told her to delete all of the photos that she took. She was like "Umm. No" and instantly started editing them to send him a finished product. Then he was like, "I love them." and sent her the biggest check that she said that she had ever seen. LOL.

Sometimes the real point of a request is a test. But yeah, some people just don't know how to part ways without picking a fight. Especially if they have abandonment issues. Why would things end, unless there was some sort of drama?

I agree. It is actually very common with people who have been neglected or abused as children to not know how to relate to people very well and have healthy communication with others.

Abandonment issues is one thing, but your zodiac should never be an excuse or even a reason to treat people like crap. And if you have abandonment issues, you have to work on that if you expect others to respect you. That's a part of being an adult, celebrity or not.

I disagree, as someone who was neglected and abused as a child. I have a difficult time trusting others and allowing them in, but I am also a social worker and have to be able to relate to people in all walks of life and have healthy communication with them. I think with Prince, he knew what he liked and what he didn't like, and was just very forward in what he thought and wanted. I think it was more of a sense that he didn't believe in wasting their time if they were not going to work well with him and his music, so was very blunt when it was over. To add to this, I think his control issues come into play with this. He was very controlling of his music and those that worked with him, feeling that he always knew best how it should sound, and if someone was not going to work up to his standards, he cut them lose and didn't hold back with it.

Yes I highly recomend the book "Childhood Disrupted: How your biography beomes your biology" By Donna Jackson Nakazawa. It has been eye opening. I found a copy at my local library.

That may be true. However, control issues could be a symptom of previous childhood trauma. I'm not sure of the extent of what Prince went through as a child but neglect can rewire a child's brain that has ramifications as an adult.

But yes he was a musical genius so who knows so I'm sure there were a lot of people he worked with that just were not up to his standards.

I don't really think that it was an excuse...more of an explanation. However, I do think that he had trust issues that arose from the fact that he was extremely private and often extended invitations to collaborate to people that he had never met---only getting a glimpse of their work via the Internet or sporadic encounters. When you do that, it's easy to become distrustful because you literally have no idea who you've invited into your space. What if they release photos without your approval or start a gossip trail about their interaction with you? It's the risk he ran by always trying help out the underdog---which is pretty admirable. I believe this young lady said that he reached out to her after seeing her work on Instagram or something. As far as the guy doing the sound engineering---we all know that Prince was a stickler for sound. Perhaps, this story had more of a comedic edge than what was conveyed---kind of like Questlove and the Finding Nemo DVD story LOL.

And yes, control issues are sometimes at the very heart of what a survivor of childhood trauma deals with. They felt they had no control over their life when they younger, so that when they grow up, they have to maintain some kind of control and keep a tight grip on that control. I am someone that has to have a very tight control on my emotions. If I lose control of my emotions, I feel very vulnerable and lost. And yes, neglect can rewire our brain, as does abuse of any kind when we're children. Often times our emotional and mental development is stunted at the age in which the abuse occurs. It definitely has had ramifications in my personal relationships, but with friends and associates, co-workers, I tend to deal much more effectively with those type of relationships. Endings are not always easy on me, especially because of my abandonment issues, but I tend to internalize those.

Control issues are also quite common in people who live/d with a seizure disorder/epilepsy. Prince had epilepsy as a child. And then add maternal abandonment? My poor Prince. Music was his expression and love.

nod Agreed. I just always thought the way Prince dealt with people as an adult, may have stemed from his childhood. He seemed to have this musical, fantasy would that only he had access to, no doubt something that was a refuge to help him deal when he was younger with what he was going through. It seems like Music was always there to help him cope, which isn't so bad, but when it comes to what we would consider communicating in the normal "adult" world with others well who knows, that may have been more challenging for him.

I remember Kevin Smith talking about filming that documentry in 2001...and said he was really annoyed that Prince didn't thank him for coming out to MN per Prince's request. Aparently he was working on music when Smith was departing and Smith didn't take that very well that Prince didn't come out and acknowledge him with a thank you. I'm not saying Prince was wrong or anything ...it is just an example of how sometimes informal rules of appropriate adult behavior concerning relationships sometimes can suffer....that self absorbed fantasy world may have saved Prince as a teenager but looked to other people as self absorbed egotism and rudeness to others. It is quiet possible that Prince could have been oblivious to how he came across to others.

Agree w/ B 100% -You have to take in the considerable amount of factors -his upbringing ( father wouldn't even let him touch the piano) and he has even said he never felt "good enough" - then the abandonment issues from both sides, the instability, his drive teliing him to do one thing and trying to figure out HOW to do it - $, time and people, and he has even said that he doesn't like to sleep because the dream never measures up to real life. On top of it all, this insatiable vault of music in his soul which he knows EXACTLY how it should sound and then there's the time. He seemed to me to have run on full-speed all the time, which makes me think he also had an inner clock and that if there was a project to be done, it was done with the utmost efficiency - which meant,"I like it - we move on. NEXT" and I think he was just like Benni said, he didn't want to waste their time and he didn't want to waste his time. Now, does this mean you can be a jerk -absolutely not - but listen, we ALL have things that take a lifetime to work on. Perhaps he was on that journey like the rest of us. I like to think of it this way - imagine you are Leonardo da Vinci and you have to explain in words to another artist exactly how to paint the Mona Lisa - think about that for a moment - the size, the colors, the mood, every line, every shade. Think of the frustration of finding a painter and then actually executing the project. The expectations alone would be daunting.

I'm not trying bash Prince at all. His compassion and love was so evident, but more than once I've been surprised how he reacted and/or treated some people.

.

I've followed him forever and personally always thought he showed signs of being a Narcissist or having Histrionic Personality disorder. Anyone agree???

.

he's dead and so, cannot contradict us. sigh he was so mysterious in life and now in death the mystery tenfolds. so i figure wtf? here's *my* theory. nod

Prince Had Secret Twinitis.

.

Prince Rogers1 Nelson and Prince Rogers2 Nelson were actually born twins, two separate individuals, like ashley and kate olsen, or wendy and susannah.

.

and very very early on in life (since P-Roger1 and P-Roger2 (was/is) both highly intelligent), they learned to do half the schoolwork, housework and etc. by pretending they were the same person, every other day one of them would be home playing music while the other was at school, and so on.

.

and since there were two of them, at times *Prince* might have seemed more distant than at other times, or perhaps more generally inclinced to shake hands as opposed to when *he* was the *other* twin, who was not so inclined to enjoy physical or eye contact or sign autographs.

.

perhaps Roger1 hated the scent of lavender while Roger2 loved it, and just maybe Roger2 drove fast while Roger1 was more of a spinsterly figure on the road. who knows for sure?

.

but one absolutely MUST admit that there were many, many references throughout prince's work about his 'gemini/twins' sides. i know you know what i mean? so is that simply coincidental or just one more completely unrelated detail? you be the judge!

.

anyway, when you add these two, very different people together playing the role of one single dude, well anyone watching these two very different men might see somewhat puzzling, inconsistent behavior patterns which really would explain quite a lot about prince's so-called personality "quirks". just my 2c* nod

.

i wonder which twin survived? hmmm

Prince is a pro at ending relationships, perhaps a genius.

Yes. Prince acted a certain way because the alignment of the stars. A small toad lives in my stomach and whispers dreams to me. I throw salt over my shoulder and war breaks out in the Ukraine.

he's dead and so, cannot contradict us. sigh he was so mysterious in life and now in death the mystery tenfolds. so i figure wtf? here's *my* theory. nod

Prince Had Secret Twinitis.

.

Prince Rogers1 Nelson and Prince Rogers2 Nelson were actually born twins, two separate individuals, like ashley and kate olsen, or wendy and susannah.

.

and very very early on in life (since P-Roger1 and P-Roger2 (was/is) both highly intelligent), they learned to do half the schoolwork, housework and etc. by pretending they were the same person, every other day one of them would be home playing music while the other was at school, and so on.

.

and since there were two of them, at times *Prince* might have seemed more distant than at other times, or perhaps more generally inclinced to shake hands as opposed to when *he* was the *other* twin, who was not so inclined to enjoy physical or eye contact or sign autographs.

.

perhaps Roger1 hated the scent of lavender while Roger2 loved it, and just maybe Roger2 drove fast while Roger1 was more of a spinsterly figure on the road. who knows for sure?

.

but one absolutely MUST admit that there were many, many references throughout prince's work about his 'gemini/twins' sides. i know you know what i mean? so is that simply coincidental or just one more completely unrelated detail? you be the judge!

.

anyway, when you add these two, very different people together playing the role of one single dude, well anyone watching these two very different men might see somewhat puzzling, inconsistent behavior patterns which really would explain quite a lot about prince's so-called personality "quirks". just my 2c* nod

.

i wonder which twin survived? hmmm

I'm not trying bash Prince at all. His compassion and love was so evident, but more than once I've been surprised how he reacted and/or treated some people.

.

I've followed him forever and personally always thought he showed signs of being a Narcissist or having Histrionic Personality disorder. Anyone agree???

HPD is real.

You know how a 5 year old demands your attention RIGHT NOW NOT LATER!?!?

Imagine an adult acting that way, hijacking everything that might be going on for things that are only their concern.

That's HPD - an adult who has not learned to moderate their own responses to their own feelings/concerns. Because we should ALL care about that thing they need. RIGHT NOW NOT LATER!!!
