How do you deal with Prince haters/trolls?

I apologize if there's already another thread like this. Do you fight them back, ignore them, tell them something once and that's it?

I think these are minor examples but anyways:

I've been watching lots of Prince videos on Youtube and of course like always there's gonna be somebody talking smack about something. I commented on the video of P playing Coachella and this person who seems very anonymous commented on it saying that Prince sucked and that he had lazy moments and that his Creep cover sucked. Now this person had first commented before that but I clearly knew he was just trying to piss me off/get my attention so I ignored him and that's when he commented the former. I still continued to ignore him after that comment by replying to someobody else's instead. So far he has not commented anything else.

This other time, some guy commented on another video saying that Prince's music sucks because he makes Disco music. lol Obviously this person doesn't know shit and was clearly trying to get attention so I didn't bother arguing with him.

we have a couple characters here on the org who do/did just that. i honestly believe these folks contributed to prince's death insofar as they made a habit of dissing, stomping on and deriding prince's work here on this messsage board, which we have come to know is where prince hung out.

.

the insults i'm talking about went so far beyond having a negative comment here and there, rising to the level of multiple insults and derogatory comments on most every thread, that it was calculated cruelty against prince's body of work.

.

they are now spouting sympathetic noises and showing remorse, but i find that equally hard to take right now.

Haters don't matter, regardless of what they say, it doesn't change ones own personal experience of Prince and his music. So I just don't lend any energy to haters, why waste the time?

Exactly, same applies to the few trolls here on the org, once they are on my shitlist I just completely skip and ignore ALL threads started by them and I ignore them mostly on other threads, once in a while I might speak my mind though and leave it at that. They mean absolutely nothing to me or my love for Prince's music.

Having said that, I wish there was a hide function for trolls so all their posts and attention-seeking thread subject lines would be hidden from view by default. I've seen it somewhere on another forum, pretty cool and useful feature to have.

Some of the same people who made a career out of spewing filth, lies and profanity toward Prince on a regular basis are now sensitive about the ME report being discussed. They weren't bothered by the past six weeks of pure speculation, not to mention the past six months and six years of disrespect that has been tolerated. Now they're upset? Seems like a day late and a dollar short to me.

The same ones said nothing about the cruelty directed toward him right on this site when he was alive and able to read it. Over and over they repeated the mantra that he was washed up except as a live perfomer, so it appears the guy did everything he could to maintain that reputation at the expense of his body, so I get where you're coming from.

I would also like to thank you for being one of the few who regularly spoke up against the way he was treated on the org by so called fans because the abuse went far beyond ordinary criticism.

That's so sad. I'm glad I wasn't here for that because I probably wouldn't have been able to hold my tongue. Which btw is how I normally approach haters/trolls. They HATE to be ignored! So that's what I try to do. There is a difference between haters and people who just have a different point of view and some folks can't seem to tolerate that at all either which is almost as bad.
YT is a major gathering site for trolls!

they're pretty predictable, i don't know if you can actually call them haters, they seem to be in between being a fan and a hater. But, my take? People that have had their own dreams shit on, dashed, shattered and ground into the dust are usually pretty hard on the winners. So, yea, i kinda ignore them.

Like others have said, the best thing to do is ignore them. However I'm stubborn with a bad temper so my pov will be heard and you will feel my wrath lol it's a good thing I wasn't on the org for that. I have a family member (by marriage) who hates Prince. She would make it verbally known every little thing she hated about him whenever I brought him up or his music came on. The usual insults "gay, weird, etc". I've never respected her in general, but that was a biggie obviously. However the interesting thing is, on 4/21 she sent me a heartfelt text message hoping I was ok and checking up on me. I'm not sure how to take it. I thanked her, but part of me still questions her actions. I don't trust her as far as I can throw her though.

From now on, 4 U I shall be wild 💜

the ones who pop on here are a different level to average, the ones on online magazine articles and youtube comments etc generally dunno wtf they are talking about. like someone mentioned a troll saying he was lazy and his Creep cover sucked, last time I checked (which was a damn long time ago!) the most prolific song writing group had been the Beegees and Prince was the solo artist for that category, obsessive workaholic would be a more accurate insult !
and if X cover version sucked live I'd be asking 'oh yep, and what the 500ish songs released by himself and others that he actually wrote ?

trolls are disadvantaged, anyone they name will compare poorly to Prince or at the very least, not demonstrably outdo him at anything significant unless its the only damn thing they do

I have learned to ignore the haters online and in my personal life. I think the people in my personal life do it because they know I love Prince. I think it's their way of aggravating me. It's hard to not let it bother me though.

Same way I deal with trolls and haters of all stripes, I ignore them mostly. Sometimes I might come back with a quip but usually the best thing is just to ignore. I had a friend (now an ex-friend for a variety of reasons) who used to make fun of me for listening to Prince and seeing him in concert. I mean, really!?! And she's a HUGE fan of a band I won't mention so as not to be mean, but let's just say I could have made fun of her quite a bit haha, had a field day with that one but . . .I held my tongue.

I get what you guys are saying. I've been lurking on this website for years (since 2010) and I even made an account once but I only lasted a month because people kept treating me like a joke and I was just really turned off by all the negativity on here. Let me just tell you one thing, Prince is not the only artist who's fans treat their fave like trash. I know at least 2 other artists who get treated the same way, if not worse than Prince was/is. It's okay not to like every single song and album or everything that Prince did, but this place crossed the line with spewing out pure hate and cruelty more than dozens of times. I remember reading threads years ago thinking "How are these people fans of Prince?" and I used to read that same question being asked to them and they'd get super defensive about it. I haven't been here long enough to judge any specific person, but I definitely believe what you're saying about some people here being trolls/haters/hypocrites.

In addition to ignoring the trolls, I also try not to get internally reactive because then that takes all of the power away from them. Thus, I will immediately disengage from a comment that seems troll-like and even the reactions to it and move forward to another thread. Another thing I do is to remind myself how miserable and puny a person must be to get their kicks out of trolling,

As far as people who just hate Prince but don't necessarily troll, they are entitled to their opinion but If it is beyond just dislke I imagine he is pushing some button of their own insecurity. It was interesting to see how many people on the great thread on people's families reactions to Prince comment how the family members who hated him were hung up on his femininity, their perception that he was gay, or how his lyrics threatend their religious beliefs. Like I said, THEIR HANGUPS.

Thankfully, we have been able to recieve the gift of Prince it is their loss.
