Yeah but they assume that all gays dress like transexuals. Transexuals can be of any orientation, many cross dressers are straight.

It's so odd to read all those "gay" themed conversations around Prince. That's actually one thing that never (EVER) crossed my mind about him, even when he was younger. And the only reason I didn't really like him at first (his fame in France didn't really start until the PR era), is actually because he looked wild and dangerous. I thought he looked like a messy hairy sweaty beast of a man. And being young, it really scared me. I had also always thought that he was really tall and only found out much later that he wasn't. I could clearly see his virility exuding from underneath all the make up and all that fancy packaging which was clearly put there to confuse the judgemental idiots (isn't that what the song Controversy really is about?). I think he did have a feminine side too (who doesn't) but I think that side was for him just a key to get to women's heart.

If he was taller, he likely would have been content to be a "normal" kid. He may have never searched for something to deflect the taunts, or he may not have approached music in the same way - the shit saved him really. Had he been average height, he may have been happy being in some stupid band, banging whoever (because he'd still be FINE) & just living. But he had something to prove - lil' man became a GIANT at his craft, so while he may have hated that about himself it really is a part of the seed of his journey. "Wow, look what he can do" became an addiction, & thank God - we all got to hear & witness that drive & growth & brilliance

I was captivated and found him remarkably interesting. I was still in my classic rock phase primarily because that's all I had really been exposed to. As a kid, I adored KISS. As a teen I dug the Stones, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder and Zeppelin and then had begun to dabble in some of the softer and safer 80's sounding stuff like Journey, Survivor and Billy Squier. I was sort of rudderless taste wise.

It was all about MTV and 1999 and Little Red Corvette were in heavy rotation. I went out and bought that record and beat it to death. My step mom asked "who does this guy think he is, Micheal Jackson?" and I stupidly answered "This guy's been around longer than Michael." One of the more idiotic things I ever said. I didn't even know Purple Rain was coming out and I heard that opening riff and the drum beat of When Doves Cry and said "I bet that's Prince". I never looked away.

There was something all encompassing about him that fascinated me from the start, even though I wasn't sure what to make of stuff like Jack U Off and Sister, but I felt like I had made my own unique discovery and felt validated as his popularity grew. Prince seemed to combine Bowie, Little Richard, James Brown, MJ, Sly, Hendrix, EW&F, and Stevie with a little bit of disco, new wave and punk thrown in. The visual element of his act was captivating and that never really changed.

MTV's influence really can't be understated and opened up a lot of doors for me. The Police, Bowie, Rod Stewart, The Cars, Rush, Blondie, MJ, Devo... It sounds almost quaint now but there was a time when MTV really was the main place to go for new music, especially once they started showing 120 Minutes, which turned me on to The Cure, The Cult, Peter Gabriel, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Faith no More, Howard Jones, Love and Rockets, Fishbone and a whole bunch of stuff. The only other place to hear new weird stuff was college radio.

Jesus that was longer than I meant it to be. Anyhow:

TL/DR: Prince really hooked me from the start and never let go. I couldn't take my eyes (or ears) off him. I bought 1999 first then worked backwards and didn't like "Prince" or "For You" very much but Controversy and Dirty Mind were very exciting to discover.

Fun fact: Liking Prince also is the only reason I know who John Prine is because he was always right next Prince on the music shelf. I know I'm not the only one.

In the music video "I Wanna Be Your Lover", he looks like a beautiful girl with a mustache.

It was around 1984 I was in college..I was like... who is the guy, girl, whatever. Kinda reminded me of my brother..a free spirit..my mom loved him. Cool songs, great dancer…mesmerizing..everyone had Prince fever..he’s been in my life since..

Meh. I thought that he was ok. The high heels were weird to me, but at the time I was a big Culture Club fan so it wasn't "strange".

THEN, his attitude and antics turned me off. He came across so freakin' cocky and rude. I didn't care for him one bit.

The first song that started to sway me was "Sign O' The Times". It was like a "new" side to this obnoxious guy. I ordered the LP from Columbia House and skipped every other song.

It wasn't until I saw him live - my friend dragged me to the Lovesexy tour in '88 - that I became an actual fan. Haven't looked back since.

First expsoure: Soft and Wet and I Wanna Be Your Lover. I only saw him on album covers and I thought his 'fro was the BOMB! I loved his music. He was different and inovative. I saw Purple Rain when it came out and that was it. I'm trying to remember but I think that was the first time that I saw him perform. Everything else had only been by buying his albums. I kind of fell off of the grid a little after 1999. I faded back in off and on. I was trying to remember why that was given that I had truly loved him so much and then I remembered that I had a so-called friend who LOVED him dearly and we fell out. I hated her and I think it flowed a little onto my love for him. I missed out on a lot of music that wasn't just his singles. Regrets.
