I was 14 or 15 when I first became a Prince fan, after 1999 was released. To put this in context, my generation was really the first to come of age (sexually, as teenagers) in the AIDS era. I can't remember a time as middle- or high-school student where AIDS wasn't a subject of discussion. Basically, my generation grew up being afraid - literally - that sex would kill you. Never mind all the blatant gay-hating that the AIDS crisis brought with it.

So then - enter this highly sexual, very androgynous star that all of our parents hated. He was (seemingly) pushing everything parents were trying to protect their children from. This made him tantalizingly enticing, that thing that your parents didn't want you to like that you loved, often in open defiance.

But more than that - his music, his persona, his message during that timeframe gave a young woman like me a glimpse of how things were supposed to be. We weren't supposed to be afraid of sex. We weren't supposed to be afraid to monkey with our gender identities. We weren't supposed to be ashamed of our bodies, or try to hide our talents for fear of standing out in a world that beat you down into conformity. He seemed to be in open defiance of everything that so-called adults embraced - abstinence, "just say no" (although he never advocated drug use - quite the opposite - many adults felt that that's where his music would lead) and greed.

It was heady stuff. And until he died and I found myself really unexpectedly upset - prolongedly so - I didn't really put together what he meant to me personally, and the impression he made on my young adult life. He helped me dream of something that I couldn't live at that time, and got me through some difficult things.
"Everything that's in your heart, come what may
Even though his might get broken" RIP Prince

My older brother was playing "Dirty Mind." I heard the gay disco on the turntable, picked up the album cover, saw the gay photo of the singer and asked my brother, "What the fuck is this shit?"

When my brother wasn't around I played that album, loved it, and bought every single Prince release after it.

So why was it gay?, more homophobia.

Yes he has just admitted his homophobia. Yes apparently a man in his underwear is gay to him, but if it was a female artist in her underwear its great to so many.

My first impressions of Prince weren't great. I could look the part but it took a long time to get the splits down and to really nail the Prince screams but I'm all good now.

People still ask me if he was gay shrug

Usually as a result of leftover school rumours (pure homophobia yes, but there you go, that's school) that they never bothered to look into later.

Interesting many of you bring up the idea that he was gay in your first impressions. Being a gay man myself I did not know what gays were properly until I was 12 or 13 and only got suspicious about myself around 15. When I was 8 or 9 I had noidea what a gay was, I thought it was some one who liked ice cream as we had a brand of ice cream and cones here called Gaytime.

I don't think it's particularly interesting. With recent interviews and re-reading old ones. Prince was deliberately cultivating that image. He even poses the question "Am I straight or gay" to the listener in one of his songs.

How about we mention Prince without instantly resorting to the gay stereotype.

[Edited 6/14/16 15:56pm]

The thread is about "First impressions". What popped into your head when you first saw/heard Prince.

Given he deliberately tied to cultivate an "is he/isn't he" image, along with the relative youth of many fans upon their first exposure. It's hardly surprising people initially thought he was gay. This is remember the dude who performed "Daddy Pop" on TV with part of the choreography seeing Prince miming he act of being penetrated from behind by one of the Gameboys. - This was back in 1992 - long before TV ever showed images of two men even kissing.

Uhh, I guess you two are new to this Prince stuff, but I'm here to tell you that when Prince first emerged there was a lot of speculation regarding his sexuality.

.

You know, here's a suggestion. Go to amazon and buy an album called "Controversy." It's by a guy named Prince and it's only been available for about 36 years now. But I see you are a little slow and new to Prince things so buy that album and listen to the title track. He comments on all the confusion regarding his sexuality.

.

Hope you enjoy that album and then buy some more Prince stuff. Wait till you get to a movie called PURPLE RAIN. That's right, this guy Prince actually made a movie! It' kind of cool to be you, just discovering this artists named Prince for the first time. Have fun in your explorations.

@adorecream...

the title of the thread is 'Your First Impression Of Prince"...

i submitted an honest reply as to what i was thinking, BACK IN 1979/1980...if the words i used offended you, thats not my problem...im not inclined to lie or censor myself to appease the sensitivities of a total stranger on the internet...its also obvious that if you were there at that time, that thats the reaction Prince was shooting for...(c) Controversy, Sexuality, etc...

my humble advice to you, if you're gonna be about that life, you might wanna get some thicker skin...the earth is a cruel ball...peace to you and yours...

And i will ignore that nonsense bolded. So when someone replies to your messege you make out they are dumb or a child it won't work with me. I was quoting you when you said (

The first time I saw what Prince looked like was when I saw him in the music video 'Little Red Corvette' and he pissed me off. My thoughts were something like "Who does this guy think he is?" and "Why doesn't he just go by his real name instead calling himself a Prince?" and "Would I be pretty/sexy enough for him?" Finally, my older brother asked me why I didn't like the song 'Little Red Corvette', and I had to face the fact that I really did like the song, and that I was just mad at Prince because I was hot for him.

Once again you clearly show that you are new to Prince. Had you been following him from the beginning, kid, you would know that what he was releasing was seen as "gay disco" when compared to, say, what The Clash were releasing at that time.

.

I like this site because we have a great cross-section of Prince fans. You have guys like me who were there from more or less the beginning, and we have newbies like you who are just learning things about Prince like he made a movie called PURPLE RAIN, he lived in Minnesota, etc... Keep asking questions, newbie, and you can learn a lot here about Prince. I'm helping you out on how Prince was perceived in the early days, maybe someone else can help you out with Prince in the early 2000s. You started late with your free copy of "20ten," but even in the early 2000s Prince was releasing some interesting stuff. Ask around. There are some old timers here who can bring you up to speed on Prince.

I was 13 when I saw the When Doves Cry video and I loved him from that moment. The music, the clothes, the movements, the eletricity...I felt he was different from all the rest.

So, the first allowance I got, I bought the Purple Rain vinyl and everything else I could find from him from that moment on.

Many years had passed and I was completely crushed when I remembered this, while I ordered Hit N Run 2 last week...

Actually I am not a NEWBIE, I am a hardcore fan who knows and understands the music of Prince really well u sarcastic mfer. I take exception to all the homophobia.

.

I know there is not a button to say what race you are, but I bet cash that your are both black christian or white super christian types. What I get angry at is the instant assumption he wears underwear, make up and bondage gear he must be gay. It is a stupid stereotype and homophobic, and yes it does offend me , a whole fucking lot actually.

.

Yes I only got into Prince with Diamonds and Pearls, but dude I was 4 when Dirty Mind came out, I lived in a home where I could not even buy a record by myself until I was 13. See I grew up in a 2 working parents home where we were raised with rules and standards, there is no way in hell my mother would have let my 4 year old ass listen to Head and Sister, she could barely standard my 18 year ass listening to it. is I am sorry I am not 55 years old like all you grandma people. If it helps because I am young I am less tolerant of this homophobia you both think are a big joke. When Prince released Prince and had the perm I was 3 fxxkin years old. How many 3 year olds do you know digesting Prince and pop music or saying "Oh shit, he must be a homo"

.

You assume that because a guy has a perm, has a photo with his arms in the teapot pose, that he must be gay, like gays only look like that. Prince looked defiant there and like he meant business, yes he was feminine but he was making a statement, expressing his dersire to look different, not gay as you and RJOrion put it. You guys instantly said "Oh he is gay because he looks like that, so he must be gay" The fact he was not means nothing to you, and you use thw ord gay as a term of abuse, a discard, as something other to you, like the gays are not worthy of your contempt. That is homophobia, now tell that to your God jackass!

Find a camp image of Prince looking like a tranny, and assume he is gay. Interesting your race Koreans are known for their homophobia (I lived there for 6 months) whereas the Japanese are super open minded in comparison.

.

You are still a homophobic prick, regardless of what your race is. Korea is a country that does not recognise homosexuality and where gays are locked up and thrown in prison. You guys are also known for your Blackface pop groups and a performer called Maikol who was a Korean with blackface and enlarged lips, so just watch who you are calling racist Kim Jong Il.

Yes so narrow minded pie eyed homophobic dinosaurs like yourself can say Prince in Lovesexy garb was purely gay while the meathead was not. Some of the straighest looking guys were gay (Rod Steiger, Robert Mitchum, Tom Selleck, Johnny Weismuller, Rock Hudson, Montgomery Clift) were closet cases too.

.

Also it is spelled Adolf dumbass, and don't compare me to some meglomaniac who murdered some 50 million people and take over the world. Gays were also amongst his victims along with all types of Asians (He was planning to kill the Japanese after they had done their bit).
