There are so many complexities within human relationships. I think Prince idolised John L and a lot of his drive came from wanting to prove to his father that he could make it as a musician. He has said that his father was "very strict, but then so were most parents back then". I got the feeling he felt the "tough love" had provided him with the discipline and armour he needed to make it in the cutthroat music industry.

Perhaps Prince was just being a normal teenager, but the relationship with his mother had deteriorated at that stage to the degree that she felt they would both benefit from some breathing space and that's how he was allowed to go and live with the Andersons. I don't think this indicates that she didn't want him, more that she wanted the best for him, and perhaps this was the best solution. Later in life, I certainly got the feeling that Prince loved his parents and had nothing but respect for them.

strict is one thing, abandonement issues are another. Those are deep scars, I know, i lost my father at 9, you never really get over a thing like that at that age. Then, with Prince, his legendary control issues have been spoken on by armchair shrinks ever since he began his career, the logic was, because everything was so out of his control as a kid, he overcompensated by keeping everything in control. Most likely true, most people's lives can be summed up by a couple issues like that. It's hard not to be that way, i remember my ma on her deathbed at 59 and thinking how she never got past issues she had as a 3 year old, well, it's kind of an awakening when you see that because it just seems ridiculous to let something like that define your whole life. With Prince, it very well could have been that control issue that kept him from seeking help.

Yep, you never know what people go through, that's why I don't ever judge folks who don't even interact with their parents. I get that there more than one side of the story but you'll be surprised as some parents are. Let them tell you, they were the best parents ever when other people, besides the kids, would tell you something else. Shit, I don't even speak to my dad, my mom told me I should ignoring the fact that he didn't even raise me. When my grandmother was still living, she didn't think either of my parents were good parents, mostly my dad. I feel like that's one of the reasons why she spoiled me a lot. My parents divorced as a toddler, my dad was hardly around and made excuses and still does at age 53, there were times when my mom and I could have been living in the streets, especially down here in the South, it's hard out here.

At the end of the day, it was apparent he made amends with his parents as he got older, so I could never say his parents didn't want him unless that person who made this comment, was part of the family or personal friend. I think only Prince's childhood friends or actual family members can confirm such rumors.

I have become cynical over time and when it comes to parenting I can be critical at times even though I have no children of my own, I work with kids and if I feel there's something wrong, I'm to report it.

But anyway, I'm not sure of he made up with his dad because he said around '96, he wasn't speaking to him but who fucking know...Prince had a tendency to be flip the script when it benefited him. I doubt his parents didn't want him but again anything is possible.

Consider his genius. If you've ever known someone with a mind as brilliant as his, you might come to the conclusion that HE might just have been too much to handle. A rebel for his cause, he was on a mission to conquer the world and no authority was going to stand in his way. There is so much misinformation out there, try not to judge harshly people you didn't know personally.

I've considered this as well. As the mother of an extremely bright tween daughter, I know firsthand how a child "with his/her own mind" can push you to the limit. On at least one occasion, I have told her that, if she is not willing to listen and abide by my rules, she is going to have to leave my house. It is a constant struggle. Fortunately, Prince landed in a good spot.

He repeated the 1983 comments about his mums dirty books in 1998 with the addition that she deliberately left them for him to find to "initiate [him] heavy and quick". I doubt he would suddenly bring this up again aged 40 if it was a lie. He always said his wild side came from him mum.

which interview was this? I'll check it out. She chewed him out for saying that the first time too. If she did do this, she was definitely a little weird. Like you, i think 40 is too old to be doing passive aggressive shit to his ma so maybe it's true.

He did dedicate his Piano and a Microphone tour to his father, at least that's what is written in the accompanying booklet. The dedication is for everything he taught his musical son.

And that may be the reason he could not keep a relationship for long. He did not know how to let himself be loved. It just breaks my heart.

i've heard that he'd start pushing people away if they got too close. I've heard it said that Duke Ellington was the same way, I've never heard anyone say they were truly close to Duke. Quincy Jones, for all his ability to charm and bullshit people, admits he was never able to get close to Duke as he was to Count Basie. It works for these guys, socializing takes too much time away from productivity.

Probably because the people he loved kicked him to the curb he didn't want to be hurt that way anymore so he walked before anybody else did. "Love 'em and leave 'em fast"

I agree! I always think of that lyric from strange relationship where he says "the more you love me the more it makes me mad" I always wonder how much truth was in that.
