A-U-T-O-matic!

Ok, I've decided this is my favorite dance song! I love the simple keyboard stanza (right word?) in it.

No-one else could understand you, you're too complex. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you...

Trent Rezor said he was inspired by Prince and you can definitely tell by this song.

Perhaps my favorite synth line by Prince. The whole album just slays.

There is something extremely electric about the 1999 and Purple Rain albums. Do you think it has something to do with the band...The Revolution? Something in Prince's life at the time that he was making this music?

I really loved Dez Dickerson's voice combined with Prince's voice. They sounded so much alike but it is like Dez amplified Prince's voice. It gives me chills (the good kind) when I hear them together.

But there was something at this time...I'd like to look into it and learn what it was that made both albums like a bolt of lightning.

I don't like automatic, never have, I have the same problem with three other tracks on 1999. There's something about them that I just don't get. The rest of the album is absolutely stellar but I really don't get on with Automatic, Lady Cab Driver, Something In The Water (althugh I absolutely love every live version I've ever heard) and All The Critics Love U.

RIP sad

1999 is my fave album, & Automatic is absolutely top 2 or 3 off that album. I think DMSR edges it out but not by much at all - killer track, LOVE the video, need this song in my life!!

headbang

It was the first full album I bought with my own money. It was already "old" at that point (1989 or 1990), but I knew I had to have it after hearing the singles. I saved up my allowance money and had my brother buy the tape for me because my mom would have fainted had she known her 9 or 10 year old son was buying it. lol

It is the alpha and omega. nod

It was my first purchase too!!! highfive I really wish I could remember it all, or kept a diary - I specifically remember buying a 45 of "Kiss" so the timeline is fuzzy for me. Why would I buy that if I was already into albums? Maybe just for the picture? Maybe I couldn't afford the Parade album yet? Was the single out before the album & I just had to have it?? I dunno, I just remember owning 1999 as my first, being super proud to have it, playing it nonstop. It is, indeed, THE P album to have exclaim biggrin

1999 is a solo Prince album except for a few guest spots.

Those songs are CORE, ESSENTIAL! I think it's the first time I've heard a P fan say they didn't like them, but it speaks to the diversity of his catalogue smile

1999 is by and large solo Prince with no backing band, besides vocals. Someone will probably correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only instrumentation not by P is the guitar on Little Red Corvette.

Saying that, you are totally right about Dez's voice! Something about Prince and Dez singing just gels.

Must be a joke. It is impossible to list THOSE 3 as your least favorite. They would all battle for spots in my top 20...lol
