The Rainbow Children. Listened once & never again. I actually like NPS & love MPLSound though

Same here when it first came out. However in the last few weeks I've gone and listened to it several times. Certainly there's some challenging moments in there, however I never really appreciated or realized how much great guitar work he has in there. Definitely brought me back into some of the songs.

Hey - I actually love everything of his I've heard. I got back into him and decided to start with the least acclaimed albums first - ones I remember not being impressed with - in about the following order:

New Power Soul

MPLSound

Rave Un2

Chaos and Disorder

Come

Emancipation

something like that - and my god they were all great to me. I defy anyone to spin even New Power Soul for a few days in their car and not find things about it they love.

I remembered thinking that Come was okay and my god my whole perception was destroyed by how damn good it was. I even loved MPLSound!

I don't know what changed - probably my perception/expectations. I am astounded at just how consistent he was. If you're not tainted by love for his 80's work give it a shot again - because they're all good, man.

Also - listen to his self titled again - then listen to HitNRun Phase 1 - you'll see so many parallels that you will realize they're like father like son. Just discovered that recently. ANyway - sorry for the double up you all.

I was listening to N.E.W.S. yesterday and it left me feeling uneasy and slightly upset. Then I thought maybe this was his intention. Because, I feel the same way after watching the news. hmmm

I was the exact same, and have listened to it a lot lately. I find the narration to be quite irritating as it really disrupts the album's flow and there are some lyrics that make me cringe a bit, but I find it to be musically brilliant and some songs are just simply great.

No. "Around The World" is more "Magical Mystery Tour" than "Sgt. Pepper's." "MMT" is really a hodgepodge of various styles (from psychedelia to simple pop, "Penny Lane" is on there, you know), and "Around The World" attempts to pull off that eclectic vibe.

Considering 'Magical Mystery Tour' isn't even a Beatles album - but rather a Capitol Records-created compilation (a six-song EP paired with various A- and B-sides from recent singles) - it's hardly an apt comparison at all.

And.... "Penny Lane" as so-called "simple pop"...

I'm amazed that anyone can actually "hate" a piece of music. What you're hearing may not speak to you, but to actually hate something takes a lot of energy. You may as well use that to enjoy stuff that speaks to you.

Unless it's the Republican Party, of course...

I wish the majority of his post-80's discography never happened. In particular I hate Graffiti Bridge for how it ruins so many wondeful Vault tracks, The Rainbow Children for being pretentious, the NPGMC stuff is unlistenable, 20Ten was like watching paint dry and the HITNRUN duo for having P go out on a pair of weak, weak records.

Have you ever heard Elton John's Victim of Love? Sometimes hate for music comes real easy.

PlectrumElectrum - I liked the music. The lyrics and the vocals on this album are horrible outside of anything Prince sang. I really have not found a reason to listen to it past the first few tiimes.

Other than the great 8 - I've found something I like on almost everything - somethings I didnt consider albums like c-note or news....they seemed like experiments to me and I was fine with that...

AOA belongs up there in his best save for funknroll and the gold standard...they don't fit.

Look, you can like the album. Makes no matter to me. I like "Chocolate Invasion / Slaughterhouse" and most people rate those as crap. It is senseless to argue what we like or don't like. But the unarguable point is this: "Around The World In A Day" is a failure musically and it forever ended Prince's reign as the greatest artist of our time. He could have been that. He was thiiiiis close. But then he released a complete mess of an album and it was bye bye Prince. "Hey, didn't he have an album and a movie that was really good back in the '80s? What happened to that guy after PURPLE RAIN?"

(Uhh, he released a disaster called "Around The World In A Day." That's what happened.)

ok first things first. Strictly speaking MMT is not an album. The Beatles never actually went into the studio and recorded an album called Magical Mystery Tour. It is to all intents and purposes a compilation put together by Capitol Records and released in the US (not UK at the time) and while it did feature some new songs taken from the TV film MMT (and only released as an EP in the UK) it was made up of several previously released songs - hence a mix of styles.

Second thing - you start off conceding that I can like the album (which is cool if you don't) but then you make a definitive statement that it is unarguable that ATWIAD was a musical failure! That is YOUR OPINION and is not one that is held by most Prince fans or music critics or indeed Prince himself. IT is certainly not unarguable.

Interestingly your favourite album Parade is the one album I remember Prince publicly saying he was not satisfied with! Go figure!

Anyway I took the Troll bait so my bad!

.

A) Re: "Magical Mystery Tour" It is on 12 inch vinyl that contains a number of songs, it is placed inside a cardboard sleeve with nice pictures....uhh, it's an album. What do you want to call it, a sculpture?

.

B) It is not my opinion that "Around The World In A Day" is a musical failure. It is a fact. Just like 2 + 2 = 4 is not my opinion but fact, it is a fact that "Around The World In A Day" is a musical failure. There is no arguing. Do you argue against 2 + 2 = 4?

Here's why it is a failure:

.

1) "Around The World..." did not live up to its predecessor "Purple Rain." That makes it a failure.

.

2) It is unlistenable from track 1 to the final track. Believe me, I've tried. It is impossible to do. If you can't even get through the album...it is obviously then a failure.

.

3) Did Prince tour for that album? No. He knew it was a failure. No one was going to buy tickets for the "Around The World In A Day Tour." (And that's ironic because that would have been a fantastic name for a world tour.) Think about it, for every album up to that one, he toured. But not this one. Why? because it was a failure.

.

4) It has "The Ladder" on it. That song instantly makes any album a failure. If "Sgt. Pepper's" had "The Ladder" on it, that album would be deeemed a failure. If "Frampton Comes Alive" had "The Ladder" on it, no one would have bought it. If "The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack" had "The Ladder" on it, John Travolta would still be doing "Welcome Back Kotter."

.

5) Musically it is horrendous. Pretentious, overblown, bombastic nonsense. Just listen to that title track. My God, couldn't somebody have stopped Prince? Wasn't there anyone aroundd him with enough integrity to say, "Prince that is garbage. We can not release that song. It will make any album it is on a failure."

.

6) No one likes it. That makes it a failure. (And if you read my previous post, you'll see I recognized that anyone who says they do like it is a liar.)

.

.

A failure:

I wouldn't say hate, but I am very indifferent to Goldn***a. Ok, big dislike in fact, but it's probably because of the rapping on it. It doesn't really feel like a Prince album to me.

Give PE another listen or 2. There are a couple of forgettable tracks in there like AintTurninRound and BoyTrouble, but the rest get better with time. I have grown fond of Hannah Weltons vocals with Prince on WhiteCaps and TicTacToe

What I CAN tell you is what albums I have recently found a brand new appreciation for.

1. Rainbow Children - Love it now. Could do without the deep voice but I still enjoy it.

2. Kamasutra - Funny story is my 22 year old son only listens to classical music and although he recognizes Prince as being a remarkable musician he just doesn't listen or really like contemporary music. I played him Coincidence or Fate and he was blown away. I finally found a Prince song he LOVES...MISSION ACCOMPLISHED : )

3. Musicology Listened to it a few times since 4/21 and it's grown on me.

And I have to agree with whoever said it on a post earlier..anything that Prince or pretty much anyone raps on for that matter is hard to listen to.

Folks, psychologists tell us that there are two ways you can tell a person is lying:

1) they fail to make eye contact,

2) they say they like "Around The World In A Day"

.

That's scientific fact. Nothing more to say.

Or are you now going to argue against science and psychologists?

"No one was going to buy tickets for the 'Around The World In Day' tour"......Hell, if the 1985 tour just consisted of him sitting onstage in a recliner chair and reading the credits of that album from a loudspeaker while "D.C Cab" played on large screen behind him...I would have DEFINITELY paid a ticket for that........."My God, couldn't somebody have stopped Prince?"....The smartest thing he did was to release that record while the "P.R" hype machine was dwindling down...He probably sold a bit more copies of that record based on the purchasing and curiousity of the "casual newbies" (who would be gone by "Parade")......."No one likes it, that makes it a failure"....There's fams here (on the org) 31 years later that still enjoy the record..I bought another CD copy of it last week (and it's not even in my top 5 P records!!)..but I enjoy the songs and the personal memories attached to it........"Here My Dear", "Embrya", "Worldwide Underground" and "The Secret Life Of Plants" were considered failures too..I guess I like failures!....... If you hate "ATWIAD", it's cool..that's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

LOL. Even the TIDAL download flac was a single track. mad

Solution:

  1. Rip CD to WAV
  2. Download Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org/)
  3. File...Open wav file
  4. Set Track Labels at start of each song
  5. File...Export Multiple to MP3
  6. Jam!

I have a love/hate relationship with Lovesexy. I like some of the songs, I am not interested in others -- but gdi if that little fucker didn't make it difficult to skp the ones I don't want to hear.

I totally wanted to choke him out for that. lol

Other than that I don't actively dislike any of the albums I have. Which, granted, isn't all of them. Some of them aren't available for digital release, and of the ones that were, I scanned before buying, not gonna lie. If I wasn't into a majority of the songs, I didn't buy the album.

Honestly, I think I prefer his later stuff to his earlier stuff. 2000's on. I just wish it was digitally available. I don't have space to have physical copies around.
