The only one I ever "hated" was The Rainbow Children. A couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd give it another listen, thinking my sensitive emotional state may have given me a newfound appreciation of it. Whoa, was that ever a bad fucking idea! disbelief

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

It would have to be The Black Album minus one track and New Power Soul minus a track or two.

The Rainbow Children is of course the best! To this silly ears above. razz

These are flat out unlistenable, terrible albums:

"Xpectation"

"Around The World In A Day"

"Kamasutra"

"One Night Alone"

"C-Note"

"N.E.W.S."

..

:disbelief:

ATWIAD are you for real? Unlistenable! It is an awesome album. Man nothing like personal taste I guess!

Personally there is nothing "unlistenable" or that I "hate" but there are albums (or more accurately songs) that I don't listen to:

NEWS
Xpectation
Kamasutra
Madhouse 8 and 16

Aha so that means I don't listen to the instrumental/jazz experiments!

OK, "Around The World In A Day" has gone down in history as the single worst follow up to a great piece of work. Yes, it is worse than THE GODFATHER PART III. Anyone who says they like "Around The World In A Day" is just a liar. Oh, "America" is pretty good and the two singles are fine (but overplayed), as for the rest of that album...it is horrendous. With the mega-success of "Purple Rain" still going on, Prince, wow, had to be different. Move away from "Purple Rain" in as dramatic a way as possible to show he's an artist! Well, he chose to try and remake The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" album and he turned himself into the laughing stock of the music industry. Bad, very bad album. A pretentious piece of garbage. Oh, yes, "The Lddder" is real great, right?

.

As for "For You"....it's not for me. It's not for you. It's not for anybody but 19 year old Prince's ego. "Oh, wow, Warner Brothers is letting me write, perform all instruments and produce my own album. I'll give them any crap that my immature 19 year old songwriting skills can give them. I don't care. I want to do it all." Uhh, folks, at that age he couldn't do it all. He could barely write a song that wouldn't make a 13 year old laugh and say, "That sucks." If 13 year olds laugh at the crap on "For You" imagine how us adults feel about it.

.

"The Truth"? You really want the truth? It sucks. Jon Bon Jovi MTV unplugged was better than that garbage. Hell, Tesla MTV unplugged looks like Bob Dylan compared to that garbage on "The Truth." On good song -- "Circle Of Amour" -- does not an album make. And if that song were not on there I'd be using my "Truth" CD as a mirror in my parakeet's birdcage. Hell, if he shits on it, it would actually improve the CD.

.

Sorry, folks, I love Prince, but he made some pretty awful records along the line. I am honest enough to tell it like it is.

"Hate" would be overstating it, but Prince hadn't released an album I liked all the way through for 20 years. Albums that I can't listen to at all are TRC, MPLSound, 20Ten, AOA and HnR I.

Oh, and Around the World In a Day is a superb album, and is specifically designed NOT to be a follow up to Purple Rain.

Cloreen are you trolling again? Are you? Seriously are you? Or are you smoking something? Hey if you don't like the album then cool but don't say people who do are lying. It remains one of my favourite Prince albums to this day!

I love ATWIAD. Absolutely it was a shock at the time in terms of a change in tone and sound but it is a solid album. It may have been a commercial suicide step but what it did was demonstrate that Prince was on a creative journey and was going to flex those creative muscles rather than churn out Purple Rain 2. He was showing he was an Artist not just a rock/pop star.

It was THIS album that signalled to Prince fans that you couldn't know what to expect. As it turned out (and with hindsight) it was a logical step towards the sound on Parade (your favourite album I believe).

IF Parade had followed PR rather than ATWIAD it would have been even more jarring and had the same massive drop in commercial success anyway.

That run of albums through the 80s was just phenomenal.

Well I must be a hell of a liar then because that's actually my favorite album and I have no problem gladly admitting to it. Sounds to me like you're one of the people who only hated the album because it wasn't Purple Rain pt. 2 like you wanted it to be. It's not as bad as you make it out to be but like somebody said earlier, personal taste I guess.

"Hate" is a big word.

I think 3121 is the cd I never loved.

"3121" is the best track song on the album. It's like Prince said, "I've got a great song, now let's put a couple of other good songs and a bunch of hot garbage around it and release it."

"Lolita" was good the first time when in the early 80s when it was every other song on the first two albums by The Time.

"Te Amo Corazon" -- Good, because all vox by Prince. Every time I hear it I'm reminded of the Brit Awards performance with Wendy, Lisa & Sheila.

"Black Sweat" is awful. The exclusive piano version on Tidal is fantastic.

"Incense And Candles" -- can't stand Tamar's background vox. Never performed live. Oh and auto-tune. Why? His voice was amazing.

"Love" has a fantastic synth line, but is ruined by Tamar's backing vox. The track goes nowhere. Very disappointing.

"Satisfied" one of his more duller ballads. Most of his ballads had passion. This feels like he was going through the motions. Also, Tamar -- nothing against her -- putting her vox where his used to be is again, frustrating :\

"Fury" -- most disappointing track on the record. After the performances on SNL/Brit Awards, this feels like a bad cover that you'll soon see on the BET Awards. (See "Screwdriver"...)

"The Word" / "BL&B" -- terrible.

"The Dance" is the 2nd best song on the album. All vocals by Prince. Harkens back to the 80s.

"Get On The Boat" would have been a great instrumental.

No one here is suggesting we wanted or expected a "Purple Rain 2." Absolutely not. At that point in Prince's career we knew each album was different in style than the previous one. But the point is this, why remake "Magical Mystery Tour" and do it so badly? Had "Parade" followed "Purple Rain" Prince would have no question been called the greatest artist that ever lived, ever will live. "Parade" is uch a strong album (might even be stronger that "Purple Rain") and it would have been both a critics' favorite and a public favorite -- imagine "Kiss" as the first new material we hear after Purple Rain-mania. Wow!

.

Unfortunately Prince released a very weak, pretentious mess of an album after "Purple Rain." It was a failure on so many levels.

The only Prince album I strongly dislike and struggle to even listen to is MPLSoUND. My initial distaste for some other lower tier albums (NPS, Planet Earth, Plectrum) has diminished over time. But I just can't get into MPLSoUND. It's a pretty shitty album, made all the shittier by the fact that Prince gave it the title that he did.

I know I shouldn't feed the troll but I can't resist LOL...

Saying ATWIAD was Prince trying to remake Magical Mystery Tour is a very tired and lazy description. The ONLY song that could be argued as being psychedelic is the title track. It was the album cover that drew comparisons (to Sgt Pepper rather than MMT). If anything the eclectic mix of song styles on SOTT is more akin to an attempt "to copy The Beatles" but nobody would suggest that was the case!

And I stand by my statement...had Prince followed PR with Parade it would have had the same impact as ATWIAD but certainly not better (even though I agree Parade is the better album the change in style from PR would have been even more jarring!)

No. "Around The World" is more "Magical Mystery Tour" than "Sgt. Pepper's." "MMT" is really a hodgepodge of various styles (from psychedelia to simple pop, "Penny Lane" is on there, you know), and "Around The World" attempts to pull off that eclectic vibe.

.

Look, you can like the album. Makes no matter to me. I like "Chocolate Invasion / Slaughterhouse" and most people rate those as crap. It is senseless to argue what we like or don't like. But the unarguable point is this: "Around The World In A Day" is a failure musically and it forever ended Prince's reign as the greatest artist of our time. He could have been that. He was thiiiiis close. But then he released a complete mess of an album and it was bye bye Prince. "Hey, didn't he have an album and a movie that was really good back in the '80s? What happened to that guy after PURPLE RAIN?"

(Uhh, he released a disaster called "Around The World In A Day." That's what happened.)

Emancipation - after buying Chaos And Disorder and reading an apology on the inner sleeve that it was supposed to be a private record but he only released it to finish his contract with warner, i got really excited about what was next in store from him. I loved the Chaos album, thought it was a return to form after the disappointing Gold album. So i was pumped when i heard the next album was gonna be what he wanted to release, thought he was keeping the good stuff to use when he was free. Heard the first single, hated it, but still bought the album 1st day it became available. Listened to it, MEH. gave it a good few weeks of listening, MEH. It was like he had lost his ability to write great songs, a procession of the same bland sound. I loved soul sanctury and the human body but everything else, meh. I felt betrayed by this album, maybe the blandest one he put out. My music relationship with him was never the same after this album.

.

Only bought a few albums after that one. Crystal Ball, Rave 2TJF - mehh, Rainbow Children and 3121. That emancipation album really ended my must buy prince album relationship. I had bought them all before that.

Although I wouldn't use the word 'hate' I have to say I have had a similar experience. For some reason I decided to listen to Emancipation first instead of just buying it immediately like I used to do, because it was quite an expensive set. I was very disappointed, I had expected so much of this new 'free' Prince album and then song after song I didn't like what I heard at all. I ended up leaving the shop without buying it and I remember I was in some state of mild shock afterwards: I just couldn't believe how bad the album was and thought he had lost the plot completely. Luckily Prince 'recovered' soon and we've had some pretty decent albums since.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

HitnRun phase One. In my opinion it has not much to do with music. Over the top childish sampling. I cannot even retry to dig it by listening it more than twice. I guess it's the only album I will never listen again.

"This could be uh u uuh u u u uh Us" that really hurts the most, can't stand it. Love "Fallinlove2nite" which simply makes me very happy whenever I hear it.

I just never liked Hannah and Joshua. Never liked songs on Plectrum electric sung by Hannah. So borred and made up sound of voice like she is singing throughout her nose. So on plectrum electrum I skip the sungs which are not sung by Prince
