Parade Could Have Been A Double Album

After the Purple Rain era, The Parade era was probably the most prolific in terms of interesting songs and expanded instrumentation. I recall before the album was released and Kiss was on the radio the album was claimed to be a return to Prince's funk roots. When it dropped I definitely heard the funk elements but the jazzy/orchestral vibe seemed to be the most prominent. With that said there is some serious funk to be found (New Position, Anotherloverholenyohead, Girls & Boys, Life Can So Nice). If Prince has been allowed to do his double album thing he could have easily compiled enough tracks to bring home the funk element and make it even bigger classic album. The first album would be the album as released, with the second album similarly paced. My picks would be:

1. An Honest Man

2. Dream Factory

3. Make Your Mama Happy

4. Last Heart

5. Alexa de Paris

6. Love or Money

7. Movie Star

8. Sexual Suicide

9. Junk Music

That's what I'm saying - let's get some of the original stuff in there. And I'm going to flip "Old Friends 4 Sale", to preceed "All My Dreams", because that's how they were originally sequenced. They actually segued into each other. On some versions of "All My Dreams", at the very beginning (depending on your copy), you can hear the reverby sounds from the very end of "Old Friends 4 Sale" ringing as the kick comes in for "All My Dreams". "Others Here With Us" - what a weird ass song; probably his oddest one to date, IMO.

I think on a 2-disc set of Parade, you'd have to include his version of "Mia Bocca", since it was in the film, plus "An Honest Man" (both versions), "Junk Music" (heard in a couple of places in the film, if memory serves). And frankly, that other version of "Sometimes It Snows In April". The other version meaning the one with a few extra instrumental embellishments heard in the film. Makes me wonder if there isn't a slightly more enhanced (read: earlier) version of that song. It reminds me how the percussion was taken out of "Nothing Compares 2 U" for the final album cut. St. Paul posted the earlier version back in 2003 or so.

You did pick some good ones, OP. There was a sound Prince had during that time. Lotta higher altered vocals (probably a precursor to Camille stuff), a drier guitar sound sometimes (like the squealing guitar throughout "Girls and Boys"), etc. Those definitely would fit a sound for an extended Parade album. Hell, without the movie, it would've been a great opportunity to put out a 2-disk set. But then again - would we have gotten SOTT as is, another 2-disc set on the heels of that?

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

yes Can't believe I forgot about All My Dreams, it's practically Christopher Tracy's Parade Pt. 2!!! It should definitely be the opening track. Move An Honest Man right after Alexa de Paris (like Venus de Milo). Old Friends 4 Sale reminds me of Under the Cherry Moon so it should be the 3rd/4th track. I like Others Here With Us but it's so weird and creepy and it doesn't fit the mood or the storyline.

It's perfect the way it is. But of the tracks mentioned, I think Alexa and the original OFFS are the only ones that fit the vibe of it.

Love or Money, Junk Music and I think Sexual Suicide were actually in the movie as background music so they have to fit the vibe. smile

I think you're thinking of "Junk Music" being in there. "heart or $" was of course. But I don't think "Sexual Suicide" was - but it's definitely in the same vibe as things like "Girls and Boys" and "Life Can Be So Nice".

But let's remember that "Old Friends 4 Sale", "All My Dreams", and "Others Here With Us" were originally on the soundtrack.

It's weird that "Mia Bocca" and "An Honest Man" were listed in the credits, but "Junk Music" wasn't.

You're probably right about Sexual Suicide I just want it to be in there. But there was a definite vibe flowing through the studio sessions of this period that evolved from the PR/ATWIAD sessions. Horns upfront in place of the keyboards, live percussion on top of drum programming, bass guitar mixed off to the side. I gotta get a nice sound system to take advantage of this Tidal account and break down all the sounds.

I was listening to these songs today and Sexual Suicide following Girls & Boys would be hot. Sexual Suicide almost feels like Girls & Boys (with the French horn?) or whatever the horn is.

So much of the Dream Factory music was made during the time period. And so much music from the 1985-1986 period, so hard to choose.

There is a sick version of An Honest Man with Prince on piano and vocals and Eric Leeds killing the sax solo. It sounds like it's live (crowd noise) but I would definitely use that version minus the crowd.

When I think of the Parade movie...

Christopher Tracy's Parade
New Position *
I Wonder U
Under the Cherry Moon
Mountains *
Girls & Boys *
Life Can Be So Nice
Sometimes It Snows In April
Venus de Milo

Definately An Honest Man that we hear in the opening.
Mia Bocca *
Alexa de Paris *
Love or Money
Old Friends 4 Sale

Junk Music

now if the movie was the way I think it should have been with live band performances and/or protege in the movie/about the movie

A Love Bizarre *

Screams of Passion
High Fashion *

Manic Monday

* performed in the movie

I know that, ergo my comparison to that being in the credits, yet "Junk Music", which can be heard in the "butterscotch - chocolate" segment, is not in the credits.

I think that's the version with Clare Fischer's orchestrations added (he apparently did orchestrations for every song on Parade, but Prince only used some of it on the album. More of it is heard in the film). I would love to have the original version of Mia Bocca, I love the part of that track that is in the movie, makes me want to hear the whole thing.

I would buy the incidental music for UTCM and PR and play them like ambient music.

Actually the race car scene is Junk Music. I think the butterscoth/chocolate scene is Schoolyard. This is turning into a triple album. (Yes there are unrelated tracks but they're all from 85/86 and they fit the Parade sound).

Fourth Pressing:

1. All My Dreams

2. Dream Factory

3. Make Your Mama Happy

4. Last Heart

5. Mia Bocca

5. Old Friends 4 Sale

6. Alexa de Paris

7. An Honest Man

8. Visions

9. A Wonderful Day

10. Movie Star

11. Love or Money

12. Sexual Suicide

13. Schoolyard

14. Junk Music

Yeah, I feel like it's there, too. It's such a long and varied song in certain ways, it could certain be cut up to use in different scenes. I guess I need to pull out that Flesh boot that leaked a couple of years ago, and take another listen.

Yeah, or at the very least, it could have been a killer deluxe reissue - which I thought we actually might see one day since Prince regained control of his music.

For artists as prolific as Prince, there's always going to be stuff left out. I'm thinking most of his WB albums really could have been double albums (or triple, lol).

Just watched UTCM last weekend and it's interesting what made the album and what didn't. The portions of Love or Money and Alex De Paris that are played in the movie are longer than the portions of some of the songs from the album.

It's nothing to do with the film, but is from that era - can't believe nobody has mentioned one of his best unreleased songs, Heaven.
