I've always done things like this, paying for someone's meal behind me in a drive thru, paying for someone's groceries in front of me in the grocery store, buying food for homeless people, etc., but from now on, when I do something like that, I plan on handing out the business card to those people. Whereas: Prince (Rogers Nelson) was born June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; and

Whereas: Prince’s artistry, music, and brand showcase his outstanding contributions to music and the arts and entertainment industry; and

Whereas: Prince was one of the best-selling recording artists of all-time, a prominent singer, writer and multi-instrumentalist, he went on to create revolutionary music and an iconic identity, which later inspired a movie, known as Purple Rain; and

Whereas: Prince was a seven-time Grammy Award winner and the winner of a Golden Globe, an Oscar, and a multiple American Music Awards and Minnesota Black Music Awards, ultimately securing himself a spot int he Rock & Roll Hall of Hame. Prince was considered a music industry innovator, a mentor, and a humble philanthropist; and

Whereas: Prince was the creator of “The Minneapolis Sound”, a contribution not only to the global catalogue of music genres, but to Minnesota’s worldwide prominence and its economic growth; and

Whereas: The untimely passing of Prince on April 21, 2016 impacted millions and has been marked with tributes and celebrations of his life and music across the world; and

Whereas: Prince Day will be celebrated in Minnesota on June 7, 2016, Prince’s birthday; and

Whereas: Minnesotans are encouraged to wear purple on Prince Day in honor of The Purple One’s enduring legacy.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARK DAYTON, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, June 7, 2016 as:

in the state of Minnesota.

My absolute favorite Prince quote from his 1985 acceptance speech at the American Music Awards:

Everyday is a little harder without him here as I continue to delve deeper into his world. I hope things are a little easier on the other side. Happy 58th Birthday Rude Boy.

Happy birthday Prince. You are such a beautiful soul and have done so much for me and continue to do so. I have been able to turn to you as a person and to your beautiful art for comfort and you have helped me and continue to help me when I am going through difficult times. I have never been able to identify and connect with an artist until I discovered you. Your character, humor, stunning personality, religious views, your love for God and Jesus, and your belief in the afterworld make me love you even more especially since we share a lot of the same views and have things in common. I am greatful and thankful for your art, it helps me get through a lot and puts a smile on my face. You are one of the most important figures in my life and that will remain now and forever. Thank you for everything. I love u! We all love u!

Thank you for everything Prince; the years of music, the drive to be a multi-instrumentalist and to write my own songs, and the knowledge that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. We may fail, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. We find out what our strengths and weaknesses are.
