It was a microphone shaped like a gun.

shrug

A lot of talk about it can be found on the Org, if you just search.

prince once said this about it, ""My words of peace go in2 the gun and nullify its power"".

He also started using it during his Godfather 3 meets Barbarella phase (around the Diamonds and Pearls album); and lent to his "Gangster Glam" look, etc.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

You know, I was thinking about that last week. How ironic that someone who supported gun control had a gun mic. Maybe it was part of the whole strategy, at that time, to give hime more percieved 'street cred' , like the Tony M raps.

Personally I never liked that gun mic and was glad when he stopped.

It always made me think of suicide the way it points.

I remember reading back then it was to show a more masculine side of him or something.

There's an press conference in Spain and he is asked about it and says,

"Words are more powerful than weapons. They can do good or harm. So- be careful what you write."
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

The thing had a pathetic vibe attached to it. Prince probably didn't see it that way, though.

When was the last time he used this? I know he used it on the Musicology tour... Was that the last time or has he used it since then?

I always thought it was pretty cool. Another one of those things that only Prince could rock.

The gun microphone was a timely metaphor to highlight the power of peace in words & music rather than violence in words & music - there was a parallel thing happening in hiphop that was glorifying thiglife etc etc.

I met my wife online on June 4th, 1998 when I posted a question about the gun microphone on Alt.Music.Prince (AMP). She answered back to me and the rest is history.

When Prince had a Q/A on Love4OneAnother, I submitted this question and got this answer from Prince:

love4oneanother.com has posted an answer to a question asked of prince. Here is the question:

"My girlfriend of 11 months and I first met online in discussion of your gun mic, what is the positive significance and meaning of your gun microphone?"

prince answer:

"My words of peace go in2 the gun and nullify its power"

I remember reading an article by his former musician(s) and one of them mentioned how he messed up a note on his instrument one nite on tour and Prince subsequently rode him about it onstage,
intimidating him by putting the mic to his head when that note was coming up. He said it was stressful n nervewracking but he never messed that, or any note, up again...

co-sign. i hated it and thought it looked silly. he was always putting it to mayte's head or between his legs which was just damn creepy to me. the choreo got more and more sadistic with the handcuffs and him forcing her head into his crotch like in the 'i hate u' video. i always felt the early 90s were his dark period.

I remember reading recently how P used it by putting it against the head of one member of his band for playing the wrong note. He said P did that for about a week and it was just nasty.
