I can't believe I'm just discovering this song!

Hi everyone - so glad I found this group! I'm a Prince fan from way back, but not so much after he left Warner. I stopped listening to the radio in general around that time, and only listened to my CDs. Which is why I'm FLOORED that I'm just discovering "Call My Name". I've been playing it on repeat ever since I first heard it a week ago! I LOVE IT! How many more fantastic ballads did he release that I missed?? It makes me really sad that I'll never see him perform it..

I just can't stop writing songs about you, I love you so much... cry

No-one else could understand you, you're too complex. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you...

He rarely performed "Call My Name", so if you saw it live, you were one of a lucky few. And even then, it was only just a portion of the song. His best ballad since "Saviour," in my opinion. Has everything I want in a ballad. No stupid lyrics -- passionate vocals -- and at least one incredible guitar solo.

OMGawd - isn't that the best? I am so excited for you as it is one of my top 3 Prince songs of all time. FYI - there is a video for it. I have seen it once. He is sooo cool in it. If I find it, I will let you know. Peace.

What other post-WB ballads do you like, besides "Saviour"? My faves are his oldies:

"How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore"

"Do Me, Baby"

"International Lover"

"Adore"

"Nothing Compares 2 U"

What else am I missing??

I think it really depends on your love of his voice because there a whole bunch of ballads since Warners time that jam.

Don't sleep on Welcome 2 The Dawn, the very last song on one of his most overlooked albums, The Truth. It's a very moving, beautiful song.

"Call My Name" is the perfect example of "just when you thought he didn't have it anymore".

This is up there, par with his ’86 and ’87 ballads.

As often, the secret lies in the slowly building and progressive intertwinings of lines.
A pretty unique background of claiming Princes in the back choir.
On being bluesy with uttermost elegance.

Among his great ballads since Lovesexy, here are a few essentials in my book -- he wrote so many, these are just the ones that I ended up listening to when they were released and that I revisit, some far more than others. Make sure to play some uptempo stuff if you don't want to end up a teary mess.

Revelation

The Breakdown

Hardrocklover

This Could be Us (AOA)

Crimson and Clover

Colonized

When I Lay My Hands on You

Man O' War

I love but I don't trust you anymore

Circle of Amour

The One

I Can't Make You Love Me

Dinner with Delores

I Hate U

Dark

Joy in Repetition

Scandalous

Empty Room

Some interesting responses. I'd put these in 2 categories: great slow jams and other ballads. From Controversy to TGE, every album had 1 or 2 great slow jams plus sometimes a b-side. Do Me Baby, How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore, The Beatiful Ones, Adore, Insatiable, and Shhh are the cream of the crop for me. These are seductive love songs with great vocals or breakup love songs in a similar style. Then you have other ballads, some of which are just as good, but they're not straight up love songs. My favorites of these are Sometimes it Snows in April, The Question of U, Still Would Stand All Time, and Power Fantasic.

With that said, here my favorites post-TGE:

Type 1
Soul Sanctuary
Dreamin' About U
So Dark
Goodbye
Extraordinary
U're Gonna C Me (ONA piano version)
Empty Room
Call My Name
On the Couch
The Dance (3121 version)
The Breakdown
Revelation

Type 2
The Love We Make
Strays of the World
Comeback
Old Friends 4 Sale
Beautiful Strange
Future Soul Song
Way Back Home

On the subject of late period ballads, does anybody else really like Better With Time? The MPLSound album tends to grrr pretty maligned here, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that assessment, but I've always enjoyed the ballads on this album. I guess it's not as memorable melodywise as some of the songs being mentioned here and it's a bit "formless" maybe but I always think it's a lovely listen when I put it on.
Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...
Always cry for love, never cry for pain...

Brilliant song. The kind of song only Prince could write. Love the odd post-911 references in a love song.

Well said. I had the same thought the other day concerning the different styles of Prince's voice. While not the rule of thumb, the way he decides to sings a track, most likely appeals more to same fans rather than others. Enough variety in his works to please all his fans, so its all good wink

"So here I sit in my lonely room
Lookin' for my sunshine
But all I've got is two cigarettes
And this broken heart of mine
So let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down"
