One of the best covers ever of a Prince song.

You'll be a fan of Morgan James after hearing her tell her Prince story. (She cried when P approved of her cover.) The 5:37 mark of this interview: https://youtu.be/fYQ4jj1tKJY?t=5m37s

Lastly, her cover of "Call My Name" is even better live -- something Prince would have approved of as well. P.S. The guitarist is her husband.

On the subject of late period ballads, does anybody else really like Better With Time?

The MPLSound album tends to grrr pretty maligned here, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that assessment, but I've always enjoyed the ballads on this album.

I guess it's not as memorable melodywise as some of the songs being mentioned here and it's a bit "formless" maybe but I always think it's a lovely listen when I put it on.

I actually had a full epiphany on that triple (well, double) album.
But I was high as George in "For Yo Sorrows".
I even went nuts on Chocolate Box, that far. biggrin

Totally off topic. Wow.

"Call My Name" is the perfect example of "just when you thought he didn't have it anymore".

This is up there, par with his ’86 and ’87 ballads.

As often, the secret lies in the slowly building and progressive intertwinings of lines.
A pretty unique background of claiming Princes in the back choir.
On being bluesy with uttermost elegance.

Brilliant song. The kind of song only Prince could write. Love the odd post-911 references in a love song.

Yeah. But maybe put there so we know it wasn't written about vanity. lol

You've got to check out "Crucial" above all others, especially if you like "Adore".
We're here, might as well get into it.

So many songs to look up! I almost don't know where to start. I'll be awfully "busy" at work today.

You guys are awesome! Wish I had known of this group immediately after his passing. I really needed someplace to express my grief besides Facebook...
No-one else could understand you, you're too complex. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you...

Hi everyone - so glad I found this group! I'm a Prince fan from way back, but not so much after he left Warner. I stopped listening to the radio in general around that time, and only listened to my CDs. Which is why I'm FLOORED that I'm just discovering "Call My Name". I've been playing it on repeat ever since I first heard it a week ago! I LOVE IT! How many more fantastic ballads did he release that I missed?? It makes me really sad that I'll never see him perform it..

I just can't stop writing songs about you, I love you so much... cry

Welcome to the Org! Enjoy exploring all those songs that are new to you. 'Call My Name' is lovely indeed.

He rarely performed "Call My Name", so if you saw it live, you were one of a lucky few. And even then, it was only just a portion of the song. His best ballad since "Saviour," in my opinion. Has everything I want in a ballad. No stupid lyrics -- passionate vocals -- and at least one incredible guitar solo.

What other post-WB ballads do you like, besides "Saviour"? My faves are his oldies:

"How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore"

"Do Me, Baby"

"International Lover"

"Adore"

"Nothing Compares 2 U"

What else am I missing??

I'd like to add my fav song off Emancipation's Disc 2, 'Curious Child'. I don't know whether everyone on here would qualify it as a ballad though.

thanks so much for the link to the clip - made me tear up as hearing a different voice with just a little different intonation etc made me *feel* those lyrics even though I subconsciously know them all and sing along to the original. I know Prince covers are probably the most frequently sucky of any frequently covered artists but when one is done right it shows how robust the backbone of the song really is I think.
