They are quite close minded, here in Mexico ´people do not have such a wide range of taste when it comes to music.

I live in Texas, too close to Mexico, so I feel you "I was here in the beginning and I'll be here forever more"

I watched him pick it up and look at it with this puzzled expression on his face. The picture on the front was Prince playing guitar. He said, "Prince played guitar?". I think my jaw hit the floor! How could he not know this? He asked if he could borrow the DVD and admitted he only really knew "that 99 song"! I then told him to check out the 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' HOF on YouTube. "Oh cool," he says, "I love that song. Did he sing it." "No...he played the guitar solo". His face was like WTF?! I had no idea how ignorant most people are (or maybe were might be more accurate now) of Prince's genius. End of story, he watched the DVD, was blown away and I feel I have made the future a better place You should've stabbed him. Christopher damn!

Yes, people who barely know about Prince think he's just some gay weirdo who sang a cutesy pop song in the 80's about the world ending or about rain being purple I know so many people my age (even up to 10 years older) who pretend to be knowledgeable about music just because they rebel against Top 40 radio and listen to The Beatles, the Stones, Guns N Roses, David Bowie, or even MJ yet when I tell them that Prince is my favorite they're like "Who's that?" It's embarrassing. I know this guy who used to be my friend that only knows David Bowie because Lady Gags (who's his absolute favorite artist) would always cite him as an influence and he claims David is a huge inspiration for him yet if you ask him what his favorite song is he'll tell you it's "Let's Dance". Embarrassing.

Some kids (11-13 year olds) brought up Prince in the chat section of this new music game app I'm playing and some girl was like "Oh my god, here we go again with Prince" and some other kid was like "This chat went from 0 to Prince real quick" but yet it was only one person who brought him up. It's not only kids being dumb, there's people decades older than me going around to hate on the internet, including on my comments of Prince videos from Youtube. It's vile and disgusting.
I joined in the convo and the girl who had brought P up kept screaming to me that she knew Prince before he died and this other guy joined to talk about Prince and I thought he was a fan so I asked him what his favorite album was. He replies to me telling that he only knows like 5 of his songs and he likes it when the young generation is into "old school" yet this guy is only 4 years older than me. He also told me he's a huge MJ fan and that he was better than Prince

I have no sympathy for any adult with access to the internet who's not familiar with Prince. And whether or not there are Prince videos on youtube doesn't make a difference to me.
As a long time fan of great music, I have routinely searched out and investigated musicians that I hear about. If someone is too lame or disinterested to do the same, that's on them.
And don't get me started on the guitar teacher mentioned in this thread who didn't know that Prince played guitar. To me, that's like having a guitar teacher who never heard of Hendrix.
And regarding other people who are dis-interested in Prince's music.... PEOPLE ARE LAME. Just look at what music is popular nowadays. What do you expect. Be glad you are not like them and that you were blessed with being able to appreciate Prince's music.

I may have to bring a Purple Band down there and see if I can stir up some interests.

There are a lot of things going on here though I think. First it is ridiculous that young people don't know Prince because however restrictive his youtube was he had become almost a social metaphor. Pick a music review and at some point there would be a reference to Prince. So actually they probably don't like music ,they want to be part of a social culture of their choice. Trust me they end up liking whatever current Barry manilow is in their dotage. Obviously secondly prince restricted free access to music which this generation takes for granted, so there is an access issue ( but bollocks) Thirdly I also think (doing a lot of thinking here) that due to technology and falling prices of such, children and teenagers grow up solely on their own peer level. I'm. 44, so when I was growing up T.V. and music in childhood were a shared experience and so there is a crossover and adversely at the time you could educate them back is n the long term. Now when you watch quiz shows younger people always go it was before their time! And breathe... RIP Prince. That probably now sounds like an instruction to illegally sample

It really, really is!! I'm glad you agree, I've known who Prince is since I was 2 or 3, and really could not wrap my head around some people my age who didn't eg. this silly girl who called When Doves Cry "the romeo and juliet song" and I just wanted to slap some sense into her
