Is "Insatiable" an underrated gem?

The song "Insatiable" from the "Diamonds & Pearls" album - is this one of Prince's well known ballads or an underrated gem?

It's one of my fave 1990s Prince song and it always sound fresh on the CD and when performed live.

Now you listen to Insatiable on D&P Beginnings and you'll see how he blows most artist of the earth with his vocal performance on that recording.

I think it's regarded as a really good song and one of the highlights of Diamonds and Pearls, at least among Prince fans. I don't think many casual music listeners know it, however.

I loved the song in its day. But even me being the Prince geek that I was back then....I still sometimes have confused it with Scandalous throughput the years.

The version on d&p beginnings is definitely in my top 5.
Much less love for the released one.

This is the only song I skip from the album. Sounds like a rip-off from Scandalous. He made tons of songs like that.

I rate it even higher than Scandalous tbh. Especially the unreleased longer version.

It was the senior song for the graduation party of my younger brother's high school back in 1993.

I don't think it's underrated, because I don't think it's that great. I mean, it could possibly make a top 10 list, but it'd be near the bottom. There are more than are better, for me.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I love Insatiable. I think it is just as good as Scandalous. Completely equal in terms of song quality. My ONLY beef with it is in the recording, and it's a very minor beef. That being the fake keyboard horns sounding too close to real but so obviously fake in a really bad way. It takes me out of the song every time, but I love the song so much. I realize that actual horns weren't a thing on that record and that's cool, but literally any other instrument playing those notes would've been perfect. I'll show my (FAKE ASS LIMP-WRISTED SAMPLED HORNS) if you show your (FAKE ASS LIMP-WRISTED SAMPLED HORNS). As I said, it's a minor complaint and so dependent on personal preference that the folks who even noticed are certain to be an extremely small minority. Insatiable is fantastic.

You should track down the version from D&P Beginnings. No FAKE ASS LIMP-WRISTED SAMPLED HORNS biggrin

I love the NPG band sound of the original version (think willing and Able or when the Lights Go Down). but I think he got it spot on with the vocal edits - there's a lot of needless parts, the final edit makes for a punchier song. (as it's the same vocal recording used on the album version).

Is the original version a band recording? It's mostly piano and vocals, and I think it's Prince on piano. I suppose it could be Michael B on drums.

I think the originals we recently heard are Prince's demos he brought to the band to then add to and develop and edit. Guessing it's all Prince on those for the most part, including drums.

I think Insatiable ranks up there as one of his top five ballads, not the album version but the extended version. To me, these are Prince's greatest ballads. Often my ranking of each song changes within the top five but International Lover is always #1 (but that's another thread).

International Lover

Do Me, Baby

The Beautiful Ones (Extended)

Adore

Insatiable (Extended)

If a man is considered guilty
For what goes on in his mind
Then give me the electric chair
For all my future crimes"
