Which song would you use to introduce a 20yo to Prince?

I'm trying to get my friend into Prince. She's into modern music and isn't really into anything that sounds old or uses unfamiliar sounds (so rule out most of his 80's music). Where do I start?

Nobody I know gun' bite

I'd like to know that myself as here in the Philippines they have no clue who Prince is/was.

When I show things to folks here= really no interest.

But they love Elvis Presley and know who Justin Bieber, Miliy Cyrus, Lady Gaga are.

Even Duran Duran sold out shows in Manila.

Sad.

I'm the only purple one on any of these islands.

Since you said she is into modern music, why not hip her to his most recent albums? AOA, HIT N RUN, Planet Earth, 3121 ect... They have a beyond modern sound. Way ahead of their time but they sound new. This is an interesting question. If it were me, I would just gage her personality and choose and album that suits her. Almost like matching one of your girlfriends with one of your guy friends. I would also just go with albums I love the most. But since she seems pretty close minded to the old school stuff, start with the new and work your way back.

If they don't like the 1999 and Purple Rain albums, then they just don't like Prince's sound. You don't need something more recent.

.

But if you need one song, I would say "Baby I'm A Star".

Agreed. Personally I could never pick and choose bits and pieces of Prince to enjoy. He is a genre within himself. She might find herself hooked upon first listen. Good luck!

I introduced my 16 year old niece (I'm 28) to Prince and she introduced all her friends and they all love him. They were all crying when he died. If this 20 yo doesn't dig vintage Prince... I don't know what to tell you. I don't understand how anyone could prefer newer material over the classics, even if there is a lot to love about the new stuff. Plus I think his 80s work has aged really well so she may surprise you about what she responds to. Hopefully she likes some gateway songs and from there wants to hear more. As someone mentioned earlier, it's about the WHOLE package and not just bits and pieces. The beauty is in the diversity and unpredictability of his work. I fondly remember discovering him for the first time. Magical times 💜

Hey. I'm 20 and I've just got into Prince.

I used to "dislike" him and I couldn't see why so many people thought he was a genius. However, as years passed by I felt more and more attracted to him and his music. So, i started a couple of years ago by listening to some of his song on Spotify (when some of his albums were still available here) and the first one I really liked was "FallinInLove2nite". It's really modern so I think your friend might like it. Also, Art Official Age as a whole could be great.

The problem is that if she's not really into 80s music it might get difficult to get into his music. However, tell her she should really try. We have this weird feeling at first that Prince's music is not accessible but it's not true. It just takes time to understand his work. Since his death, I'm listening to his albums in chronological order and it's just so amazing to see how he evolved.

The only way for to get into his music is too really want it. The fact that he has so many albums can be overwhelming but it's a chance.

So yes start with the new and then go to the old. Or maybe make her listen to some of his big hits There must be at least one song from the 80s that she likes (Little Red Corvette? ...).

This is off topic but I must say i'm glad I found this forum. I'm learning something new about Prince everyday and falling more and more in love with him. It makes me really mad that it took his death to makes me want to discover his whole discography. Maybe, I just had to wait to be ready to understand the genius.

Prince has made just about every style of music you can think of.

Pick one that fits the style they like.

That really is the answer.

.

The song is Prince -- wild, shocking, funny, danceable.

.

If you don't tap your foot and laugh at "Sister" then what's the point of going forward listening to any more of his music? Plus it's only like a minute and a half long. I'd hate it if someone forced me to listen to a 14 minute song from "N.E.W.S" as my first Prince song.

Begin at Dirty Mind. They'll be hooked. Read a great quote from someone reviewing DM years ago.
