"Essential" is down to which songs you like...

This list is highly incomplete. The Ice Cube version of Black Sweat is a fake AFAIK. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Define "available"? I mean, stuff's on Discogs and Amazon. The best way is to look through a discography, like PrinceVault or even Wikipedia on the Singles discography page, and just walk through them. There are a lot of early promos, white label sorta stuff, that has 3 or 4 songs on them. There might be one with something like "Let's Work", but also has "head" or "Sister" or something random like that. . . Dig around on Discogs. create an account, and start adding things you own to your collection. Add other things you find to your want list, and just keep track from there. Damn near everything released in modern times seems to be there...almost. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Hey, that's how marketed it, and spoke about it, and how the band was introduced on Leno, etc. I like trilogys anyway, so it makes even more sense. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

It's not a matter of hardcore or belief but a matter of what's written on the cover, which is an objective fact. One can't say one thing is what it's not or that it isn't what it is. See Aristotle. The problem with Prince is that a lot of things were published under aliases or under the disguise of another artist. Regardless of who sings every NPG album could have been released as a "Prince" album if he had so wished, same with Kamasutra, Madhouse and Eric Leeds' Times Squared, and in fact same with all the albums he gave to others (Prince wouldn't have been the first artist to release an album with a lead vocalist who isn't him, and in a different marketing context Jill Jones could for example have been released as a Prince record - I have many albums credited to the main artist and featuring a guest lead vocalist on every song). All NPG albums and singles are, of course, Prince releases in the sense that they are his creation from bottom to top. NPS neither more or less than the others. Only if you make a list of "Prince" releases you have to stick to "Prince" releases or the list will spiral out of control, because you would need to put everything else. I do not believe the OP wish to have a list of every extended version that includes all the side projects. I believe I remember that Boris clearly stated, on numerous occasions, that as far as he was concerned NPS and its singles were NPG albums because that was what was stated on the covers. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
