Would/could you be a fan based only on chart songs?

I'm just curious, obviously EVERYONE seems to be a fan over the last few weeks, only to learn they only have the Ulimate Prince CD! Personally I can understand people who say they aint into Prince, but have never heard anything other than a handful of chart songs. Generally speaking, the singles from an album are not my favourites.

Owning only a 'Greatest Hits' by an act doesn't make you a fan of said act. If you buy a greatest hits of a recently deceased artist, just to see what the fuss is all about. you're a bit of a wanker. If however, you burn any lingering Madonna CD's in an oil drum at the end of your garden like i will be this weekend, you're a fucking Superhero. FACT!

Sure you can. Prince had 47 songs hit the Billboard Hot 100 - that's a lot.

I don't like the idea of using some sort of litmus test to distinguish fans from non-fans.

Yes, yes you can. I love Stevie Wonder but only own a 4 CD set of his hits. In fact, I have always been more of a singles fan than an album fan. I love charts too! I mean, I study Billboard chart books for fun. I have no problem with someone saying they are a Prince fan and only own his greatest hits. There is no right way to be a fan of someone. I just happen to be obsessive with Prince, owning hundreds of his CD's and records.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.
