Around The World In A Day, Sign Of The Times, and Love Symbol are in my heavy rotaion right now with Lotusflow3r (one of my favs) and live stuff mixed in. Funny to hear lots of people are listening to Batman, which I was spinning like mad last week.

I loved Batman when I first heard it.

One thing I have noticed since getting into his music (I have been a fan for about a year or so) is that even on the less critically acclaimed albums, the music is still great.

ATWIAD - I had it in cassette form only, so it was neglected for several years until I downloaded it last week. I used to love it but my memory was tainted by popular opinion of the day that it was "indulgant" and"disappointing". The first time I played it after I downloaded it was like reuniting with a childhood sweetheart that circumstances prevented the relationship from continuin: Love at second sight (go around). I can't believe how way out it really is despite the two singles. It really made a statement that Prince chose to be an artist first rather than just a commercial superstar. It cost him many mainstream fans, but further cemented my love for him as an artist.

i listened to that one today to, inspite of lukewarm reviews, if you were a teenager at that time and into prince, you loved anything he put out, I wore that album out even though I didn't think it was quite as good as 1999 or Purple Rain, it was still worth getting excited over. The most important thing, as a future musician was that I began exploring the Beatles immediately after that album came out because so much was made of the idea that it was an homage to it. Prince has said this wasn't true and I don't think it was only beatles influenced but I think Prince kinda fibbed sometimes about his influences.

I became a huge Beatles fan at the age of 11, when John Lennon was killed. I completely immersed myself into Beatledom and all things 60's, and have remained an enormous fan ever since. In '83 I discovered Prince and he became the first 'modern' artist that I got in to. For over thirty some odd years now my love of The Beatles and Prince have sat happily side by side. So I'm always interested when the subject of ATWIAD comes up in relation to the fabs.

Personally, as much as I would love the idea of Prince being heavily influenced by The Beatles for an album (that would be a drean scenario for me), I always thought ATWIAD brought in a wide variety of influences. Yes, there is a Beatlesy vibe going on in a couple of places, but there was an artist here who had also obviously listened to a LOT of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Funkadelic (Maggot Brain), Santana, early Curtis Mayfield, Sly & The Family Stone (Stand!), Cream and especially Norman Whitfield's work with The Temptations between '69-'73. There was a lot of psychedelic music to be inspired by; black, white, pop, soul, funk and rock.

If ATWIAD was a homage, I think it was a homage to all of the above and probably much more besides. It was such an ecclectic mix of styles and I too practically wore out my copy. The more all of my friends and family told me that the album was a weird bunch of crap, the more I listened to it and loved it. It was never my favourite Prince album, but I was never more proud to be a Prince fan than when he took that giant abrupt left turn in the road after Purple Rain, and put out an album that could have all but killed off his career, just as he'd arrived at the very top of the tree. I knew then that it was worth riding on this guy's coat tails because it was always going to be an interesting ride.

Emancipation - one of the albums that turned me from a casual fan to a devotee; have my own playlist of the essential tracks, its 19 of the 36 songs. Amazing number of very high quality material, wonderful album.

I swallowed the sgt. Peppers remake line all the way. It was ok, because it was the beginning of branching way out as a listener. Prince gets credit from me for that. Prince said it best thought "around the world in a day is a funky album" indeed it was, plenty of bottom.

The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale <- criminally underrated. Lot's of ppl let their inside knowledge of this album get in the way. Without that mental baggage, it's really fantastic.

.

Batman + 12" remixes.. holy wow, those 12"s versions are amazing and really show how the Lovesexy sound overlaps some of the Batman sounds.

.

Come
