QUESTION: WAS THAT PRINCE'S VOICE INTRODUCING SHEILA E. LAST NIGHT? It sure sounded like him.

Loved the tribute folks!!!

Yes, it was him. I damn near lost my mind when I heard him. touched

I missed his voice part. Juggling a 18 month old and color crew at the same time so didn't hear it. Gotta listen again.

Mani is half Italian and half Egyptian. Maybe she fit in with P's middle eastern thingy he had going on. But to the topic..P definitely saw color and seemed to be acutely aware of disparages. I think his goal was to spread love and acceptance for ALL in a world that eventually wouldn't see color. He was engaged to a white woman and a black woman, married a puerto rican, and then an italinan/egyptian. He embraced ALL people, loved ALLl people and had a heart for his own people. That is part of what made him so magical.

[Edited 6/27/16 9:42am]

who was the other woman he was engaged to?

Maybe not really 'engaged' but one that was subjective and since she thought it was so, I included it...Nona. And as long as I went there I should have included that he was also engaged to a hispanic woman if as Sheila E says he proposed on stage is true.

The most anticipated moment of the 2016 BET Awards was a tribute to the iconic Prince. Orchestrated by Questlove of The Roots, the late singer who passed away earlier this year, was honored with five separate performances at Sunday night’s show featuring various artists.

Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monáe, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Jennifer Hudson, Bilal, Tori Kelly, Maxwell, and Sheila E., all hit the stage at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater to honor the purple legend.

Watch the various medley performances below.

Continue after the jump….

The Roots, Erykah Badu, Bilal – Prince Medley Tribute #1

Stevie Wonder, Tori Kelly, Jennifer Hudson – Prince Medley Tribute #2

Maxwell – Prince Medley Tribute #3

Janelle Monáe – Prince Medley Tribute #4

oh
I'm kinda blurry on the Nona/Mayte thing. I didn't realize he was engaged to her.

Yeah Sheila E a Creole/Mexican woman (let's be politically correct lol) I believe her though, that it happened while Prince was caught up in lovesexy

I must say I wish the show itself hadn't been so political because it's kind of overshadowing these great performances. Go to the comments section on just about any recap of the night and the comments are all about race and not the performances themselves. This isn't about only BET can do a proper Prince tribute; its Billboard's tribute was awful and BET did something better.

Did they mention Bernie Worrell, the funkiest keyboardist on the planet, who died last week? I could have missed a photo or acknowledgement. I was multitasking during the non-Prince segments.

As for Tina, isn't the BET Awards show a way of giving flowers to artists who are still alive, especially the Lifetime Achievement Award?

lol Right

Considering two of the people she mentioned did recieve their "flowers" from BET wwhile they were alive, I saw her statement for what it was. She was just pandering for her daughter to be "honored". GTFOH Tina Knowles and take your shady statements with you. While you and the Beehive believe your daughter to be a god, the truth is she will never be a Prince(ss).

This was hard to watch. So many feelings coming back up...
Did not watch it live, just watched the youtube tribute videos, wanted to listen to the presentations as well, though.

Miss Badu was amazing, love her, best song choice she could ever make. And the drum sound on that... nailed it!

Bilal... how come I have never heard of this guy? Wow. Loved his rendition of The Beautiful Ones, it was really good. Can anyone recommend some music of his for me?
Did not like Stevie Wonder at all, I'm sorry to say. Nor Janelle. There was something off, at least for me.

Not gonna comment on Purple Rain. At all. ARGH!
Now Maxwell was fantastic. Really was.

Cannot bring myself to watch Sheila E. I cried during Bilal and Maxwell, I know what's gonna happen when I watch Sheila E.
What happened to D'Angelo? Was it too much for him, I wonder?
Lenny Kravitz should have been there. The tribute needed a guitar solo and some rock and roll. But you can't please everyone, so there.
Lovely tribute.
Now I need to find the courage to watch the final segment...

I teared up a few times. A few were hits, a few misses, but I walked away thinking that Sheila E really needs to front The Revolution and hit the road. Continue the celebration, yo, that felt really good and I can't believe I am going to use this word but it felt like one of the most authentic performances of all the tributes I've seen so far. For, um, obvious reasons smile. But I think it was Sheila's performance that really captured that feeling for me. She embodied, as well as one can, Prince's frontperson spirit animal.

Authentic yes, absolutely; Sheila E fronting the Revolution and hitting the road... nope. Huh-huh.

it's not just prince. i bet if they asked many in this generation to name some michael jackson, whitney, madonna, springteen songs, the majority of them would be stumped.

Hell, most of them in the audience were probably looking at Erykah, Maxwell, and Bilal and thinking, "Who day?" Any artist who's been out for more than ten years ago outside of Beyonce is a complete unkwown to most of them.

I was watching a really irritating youtube livestream, and that's exactly what I noticed when I dared look at the chat. The user livestreaming it even put "Who?" on the screen when Bilal came on.

I don't think they were really engaged (Nona and P). Maybe for her it was something implied, I think from when he told her sister he was going to marry her or something. I didn't know Sheila was Creole too. It's darn tough to be thoroughly politically correct anymore! I guess my point is that P was acutely aware of color, but that didn't stop him from loving people of all colors. We could all learn from him on that one.

Prince in song seemed to be in love with the idea of marriage, 'marry me' was throught his songs

Yes Sheila's father is Mexican (a lot of people consider that diff from Latino) her mother is Creole

I was just kidding about the politically correct, I guess that is more ethnically correct.

Sheila and the rest of the purple family's performance was just WOW! That's what I'm talking about.

Over all, loved Chappelle/Roots/Erykah/Bilal, Stevie/Tori/Hudson was ok, loved Maxwell, loved Janelle, loved Sheila. As tributes go, this one's a winner.

As for the rest of the show, Alicia, Paak & Sam Jackson were worth seeing, the rest of the show... was not.

In my not-so-humble opinion, of course... wink

He did seem so. I remember on the View (I think) once Barbara Wawa pointed out to him that he was 'different' and it really seemed to bother him. I think he desperately wanted normalcy but he really wasn't normal lol. I could only imagine what his marriages must have been like. When he sings about being a lover, mother, brother, sister, father...in a way for me it was true (not the lover part) but as a woman, here was this tiny little man who was sexy (lover part), child like in many ways (mother part)one of the girls (sister part) and someone who mentored young women and showed them the ropes and protected them (brother). No wonder he had us all in a mixed up emotional mess!

At the Oakland P&M show Prince talked about his father and said he loved all the things his father loved and then named off what those things were: his mother, the bible and music. He also mentioned at one point how much his mother and father loved each other. Makes me wonder just how scarred he was over their breakup and how that impacted the rest of his life.

Amazing tribute. I still haven't managed to find Eryka Baduh's performance, but the other three were great, and Sheila was off the hook. Seeing all those people on the same stage, and Sheila herself giving her all was absolutely amazing. At the end I wanted to run to the stage and hug Mayte, she's so beautiful and looks so sad.

And hearing Prince's voice introducing Sheila... well, here come the tears again.

I don't want to belittle Madonna, but this is how you pay tribute to Prince, with great musicians having fun on stage, not by covering Sinead O'Connor!

For the most part me too. It can be very exclusionary if you don't share the same beliefs and I think that music should be inclusive and used as a tool to bring everyone together. But that isn't the real world, and I didn't mind it so much this year because there are very real issues we are dealing with (even P sang about the issues), and without derailing and going political it is very crucial this year that people vote, more so than any other year I can remember. That being said, lol, I am not voting this year because frankly, I don't like either candidate...but I can't hate on those attempting to get their votes heard. (does this make sense?)

His face might have been on the In Memoriam display. Prior to Laila Ali, they had the screens lined with faces of those that passed away within the last year. There was SO many, that the only one I can remember seeing was Bobbi Kristina because she was at the top and my attention got interrupted.

That was beautiful...well, most of it. I skipped Purple Rain.

But that was the best live version of Dorothys Ballad I´ve heard. The Beautiful Ones was amazing, too. Great musicians, great feel. That brought back a few tears, didn´t expect that.

Sheila picked great songs and did a great show. To hear Let´s Work made me wiggle in the giggle lol

And Jerome in the end<3 I wish Morris would have joined for a minute. But it was lovely anyway. Thanks to all who were involved in this.
