THis shows why it should have been done by Prince's people - they were the first to love him and never stopped loving him.

Am I the only one offended by mama Tina's comment re smelling the flowers while they are still here and appreciating the living artists ...as if we don't?I mean really??? Imagine if her daughter Beyoncé had passed ya think she would be saying that? This was a Prince tribute...

I'm so glad someone brought this up. Her comment irritated the hell out of me. Like, I get it. She has a point. But that is not what tonight was about.

[Edited 6/26/16 23:13pm]

Why do I think that was said more about her daughter than about honoring Prince.

Really she just couldn't make a comment on Prince's tribute without sliding some bs into it.

I've just watched the Sheila and Co tribute again and I am crying again. In the picture you can see from everyone's eyes that they all truly gave it their all, it was a brilliant tribute and I am so grateful that it has helped so many of us as it was needed but I have to say I feel right back at stage one now...pass the tissues bawl

Some good performances but staged displays of mourning - which really turn out to simply be opportunistic publicity for performers - are still bullshit to me.

Jennifer wiped up whe floor with that song!!! music . She NEVER disappoints. For those who complain she was screaming too much and over-singing, she's a SOUL singer with gospel roots. That's what they do. A lot of you listen to these watered-down lil chicks like Beyonce and Rhianna and think that's authentic R&B music when it is not. Jennifer is a singer who moves and touches the soul, which is what legitimate R&B singers are supposed to do. She did justice to the song and she alone made up for that atrocious Madonna monstrocity on the Grammy Awards. And for those who tend to have short memories, Prince used to do more than his share of Soul screaming and shouting because his roots were in R&B/Soul music.

Am I the only one that thought it overall sucked?? Erykah Badu was off key most of TBODP, Bilal did NOT do The Beautiful Ones justice (sounded weak, thin and strained), J.Hud and crew..... ummmm, just no, Janelle Monet was trying too hard (as usual), Maxwell sounded good but really should have just stuck to the script..... The only thing even close to being redeeming was Sheila's set. She had the energy, the history.... but the rest? Nahhhhh

Just proves that the only person who can do Prince's music justice is Prince himself. But at least you got the sense some thought was put into this tribute whereas zero thought was put into the Billboard one.

I hope that as the days go by some HQ footage shows on You Tube as at the moment most of it is removed or extremly fuzzy so us Aussies can see it biggrin

I did see the fuzzy footage of Sheile E though and it was incredible from what I could tell, it had me in tears right from the start.

But yes it is so sad as our man is not there neutral

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I know they said, Beyonce left for her concert in London, but apparently the concert is next week. For some odd reason, I felt like she may have had the gas face because:

1. It took away from it being 'Beyonce' night re: her performance and 'Formation' win.

2. Ain't nobody ask her to whip the blonde lace front all over the tribute.

I've had my fill of Beyonce for years now.. I'm so over her and her music.

Here here. How much strip mall burlesque can one do? A lot, I guess.

I did not like the way it was stretch out.
Put the tribute in 2 sections near the middle.

Initially I wasn't happy about this but now I'm glad they did it that way because it allowed for more Prince music. If it had been one or two segments in the middle of the show it probably would have lasted half as long. Sheila E's tribute alone was 8 minutes. That would have taken up one TV segment right there. BET got it right with having her close out the show. I definitely got a sense the performance was partially about giving a middle finger to those who don't think she's relevant or the right person to do a tribute.

The one annoying thing about the night was Beyoncé being there at all. If she was going to leave right away why did she even show up? Just to remind people that she's the Queen?

THe difference is that Prince screamed and shouted when needed and it always worked. Hudson is from the old school of screaming black women who want to stun the audience with how big their mouth and lungs are. At some point, it is not singing and I have always hated it.

I couldn't help but spot all the people in the audience who (with exceptions) a) were feeling it a little bit but didn't want to show it too much because god forbid if you look like you're having a good time (doesn't translate well on instragram) b) looked completely disinterested / had no idea what was going on / didn't know any of the songs c) were on their phones probably youtubing Beyonce's performance from earlier. BAHHH maybe I'm getting old. That whole room should have been one big party!!

[Edited 6/27/16 2:55am]

I AGREE! I think part of it is that Prince took himself out of social media/the internet whirl for about 20 years. Not totally, but when these kids were growing up, they didn't know him. They knew rappers. A friend - who loves Prince - said her 14-year-old son didn't know him or his music, even though she played it around the house. If that finale didn't pull people into the Purple Army, if His Royal Badness didn't rock your world, then you are not alive!!!!
