FUNKYNESS

I skipped it. THe state of black music is such that I cant stand to endure an award show to see one segment. Besides, I was just starting to feel a little bit better and it would just open the wound for me again. Maybe I will see Janelle Monet's part online somewhere - she is the only true new generatin artist who might be able to follow Prince.

I wasn't going to watch, but I did check in for the musical numbers. Maxwell did a tremendous job, but the finale: Sheila E. and Company were SENSATIONAL! I really believe now that she should be the keeper of the flame by overseeing the vault material review. Those two women holding the guitar at the end: heartbreaking. I have complained about Mayte being the Widow Nelson since he passed away, but I realize that these are the two women he loved above all others in his life. I exclude his mother because there were serious issues of abandonment there. But Sheila E. and Mayte: the core of his heart IMO.

This was hard to watch. So many feelings coming back up...
Did not watch it live, just watched the youtube tribute videos, wanted to listen to the presentations as well, though.

Miss Badu was amazing, love her, best song choice she could ever make. And the drum sound on that... nailed it!

Bilal... how come I have never heard of this guy? Wow. Loved his rendition of The Beautiful Ones, it was really good. Can anyone recommend some music of his for me?
Did not like Stevie Wonder at all, I'm sorry to say. Nor Janelle. There was something off, at least for me.

Not gonna comment on Purple Rain. At all. ARGH!
Now Maxwell was fantastic. Really was.

Cannot bring myself to watch Sheila E. I cried during Bilal and Maxwell, I know what's gonna happen when I watch Sheila E.
What happened to D'Angelo? Was it too much for him, I wonder?
Lenny Kravitz should have been there. The tribute needed a guitar solo and some rock and roll. But you can't please everyone, so there.
Lovely tribute.
Now I need to find the courage to watch the final segment...

SHEILA E... JUST WOW!!!

The moment at the end when they're holding the guitar, that got to me big time...

Best Prince tribute I've seen so far.

Am I the only one that thought it overall sucked?? Erykah Badu was off key most of TBODP, Bilal did NOT do The Beautiful Ones justice (sounded weak, thin and strained), J.Hud and crew...... ummmm, just no, Janelle Monet was trying too hard (as usual), Maxwell sounded good but really should have just stuck to the script..... The only thing even close to being redeeming was Sheila's set. She had the energy, the history.... but the rest? Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Cinnamon234 said: It was good but none of these younger artists have a falsetto like Prince. Sigh.

Prince just like Chaka Khan, Sade, Teena Marie, and Stevie Knicks, (to name a few), have/had such perfectly imperfect unique voices and vocal stylings that only a chosen gifted few can sing their songs. And those gifted few have only a few songs from said artsits catalog that they can perform imho..

Very very very true.

It wasn't perfect, but the weakest performance was greater than Madonna's attempt and overall I thought it was a good celebration of his music. Especially Sheila E.

These photos bring me to tears. I think this is what i've been missing these past 2 months. Not closure, but just for someone to acknowledge him. This was it. This gesture right here. My eyes will be puffy until morning after all this crying.

I loved the way Mayte held on to Sheila E at the end. Sheila looked so tired and so emotionally wrought. It is a testimony and another part of the mystry of how both of these women who worked with him, befriended him, loved him and shared his bed would be there at the end, sharing his guitar and holding each other up.

I AGREE! I think part of it is that Prince took himself out of social media/the internet whirl for about 20 years. Not totally, but when these kids were growing up, they didn't know him. They knew rappers. A friend - who loves Prince - said her 14-year-old son didn't know him or his music, even though she played it around the house. If that finale didn't pull people into the Purple Army, if His Royal Badness didn't rock your world, then you are not alive!!!!

Spike Lee’s Prince Tribute Looks More Like Willy Wonka

Spike Lee: Director Criticized for Purple Outfit Worn at BET Awards
Lee wore a purple top hat, suit and tie as a tribute to Prince, who was being honored with a series of performances at the show. Online users compared Lee's outfit to Willy Wonka or the Mad Hatter.

Sheila E and the NPG did a great job. i'm pretty much left satisfied with this tribute.. and honestly don't want to see another attempt at one.. The other performances werent really needed during the show to be honest. The only thing that can possibly top this is all of his bands coming together to jam.

Not long after April, my goddaughter (who's 15 in Nov) said her friend had no idea who P was. She was shocked, I wasn't.

Am I the only one offended by mama Tina's comment re smelling the flowers while they are still here and appreciating the living artists ...as if we don't?I mean really??? Imagine if her daughter Beyoncé had passed ya think she would be saying that? This was a Prince tribute...

I'm so glad someone brought this up. Her comment irritated the hell out of me. Like, I get it. She has a point. But that is not what tonight was about.

[Edited 6/26/16 23:13pm]

I know they said, Beyonce left for her concert in London, but apparently the concert is next week. For some odd reason, I felt like she may have had the gas face because:

1. It took away from it being 'Beyonce' night re: her performance and 'Formation' win.

2. Ain't nobody ask her to whip the blonde lace front all over the tribute.

I did not watch live. I only watched the musical tributes. Was it Perfect? No. But it was a celebration of Prince and his Music. Shelia did him proud. Much better than the maudlin Billboard tribute.

I did not like the way it was stretch out.
Put the tribute in 2 sections near the middle.

.
the thing about these tributes, is that Prince's music

is nothing like the stuff that is being presented at these award shows.
No African descendant Jazz artists(for the most part) no African descendant folk artists or oprah or rock etc

So B E T Music Awards does not acknowledge all musicians. They need to change the name.

Prince's music was so vastly different...

I like the music during Janelles set. And the 1st outfit she wore. Her voice seemed kinda thin on the songs. Didn't like the assless pants.

Sheila got her time, Sheila Jerome Eddie M Mayte (NPG?) I wished this segment wasn't so 'rushed'

Sheila still should not be overseeing the Vault, she can be the one who helps organize the proper bands to do special shows, but not in the Vault.
Plus she said the Vault material should not be released. So that's a big N O for me.
