Loved seeing everyone together. Mayte with her hand around Sheila made me tear up.

I am in the UK, was reading your posts when I got up this morning but it was Sheila's performance I really wanted to see and that was a real tribute, amazing performance by all, my eyes are leaking, seeing how sad and upset she looked at the end, Prince will surely be looking at that and smiling x

OMG, so emotional from the moment I saw Chappelle. Just seeing the pics really drove it home - he's GONE, holy shit. We'll never see him play that thang again. We'll never sing those last melodic notes of PR WITH HIM EVER AGAIN sad it's just hitting me hard all over again. That must have been sooooo hard for Sheila, I applaud her & all of them - fitting tribute, all around. & I am BROKEN all over again πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I thought I was the only one - Beyonce has NO Soul and I do not get the hype imo Sheilah brought life and that is why I loved Prince his energy even when a sad song was life and Sheilah and her crew embodied that tonight

and I am glad that the focus is NOW on Prince, Shelia's tribute and Jesse Williams being all kinds of woke. Enough of Beyonce.

Like seriously ENOUGGGGHHHHH. Firstly, I found her releasing her new album so soon after Prince died direspectful... but that's just me. And NOW... she leaves the BET Awards straight after her performance to fly to London??? Her first show there is not for another week!! Is she serious??? Why not stick around and celebrate one of the greatest artists of all time with your peers? She is just SO self-serving and pretentious. I don't find her remotely sincere or relatable.

.

It's quite ironic that someone like Prince, who was this larger than life pop star, was able to create art that was intimidate and relatable. You felt everything note he ever played and every word he ever sung. My god, how I miss this man. I felt his void tonight more than ever.

Baby, that was much too fast... 1958-2016

I read all of your posts on this thread before looking for the videos. It was almost like seeing it live and I can certainly do without a lot of the show as such, judging from your descriptions. cool Will try to find the tributes though, they sound worthy overall.

Morris Day shared a link to the last performance with Sheila E. and the rest so I've seen that. I agree with your enthusiasm! Wow.. That brought back the tears for sure. It was very special and she made a good attempt at bringing back the feel of a Prince performance. As good as it can ever get without the man himself. sad

Yeah I thought it was voice to from maybe a previous performance. If not, that's a vocal double out there.

From the way it sounded, it sounded like it was him from the Jay Leno performance of "The Everlasting Now." I could TOTALLY be wrong though. Feel free to shoot me down. Lol

To me it kinda sounds like when he introduced her at the 36th NAACP awards. I could be wrong too lol Who knows! It was perfect though

I saw quite a few similarities between this and the NAACP performance.

These photos bring me to tears. I think this is what i've been missing these past 2 months. Not closure, but just for someone to acknowledge him. This was it. This gesture right here. My eyes will be puffy until morning after all this crying.

I loved the way Mayte held on to Sheila E at the end. Sheila looked so tired and so emotionally wrought. It is a testimony and another part of the mystry of how both of these women who worked with him, befriended him, loved him and shared his bed would be there at the end, sharing his guitar and holding each other up.

I dug this, especially Erykah/Bilal/Questlove and Sheila E.'s sets, but I dunno about Maxwell crowbarring an entire side-rant into his tribute. I think I'm cooler with melisma/"making the song your own" vocally than I am with straight-up re-writing half the lyrics like that, regardless of the message intended.

I couldn't help but spot all the people in the audience who (with exceptions) a) were feeling it a little bit but didn't want to show it too much because god forbid if you look like you're having a good time (doesn't translate well on instragram) b) looked completely disinterested / had no idea what was going on / didn't know any of the songs c) were on their phones probably youtubing Beyonce's performance from earlier. BAHHH maybe I'm getting old. That whole room should have been one big party!!

Sheila E of course..she embodied his spirit thank you. Glad Jerome was there too.
Bilal..loved it. He did the song justice..rolling on the floor was slightly comical..Sorry...maybe prince got away with it because he was petite otherwise flawless.
Janelle monae was youthfull and vibrant..I liked it..(assless pants..lol)

As for Jennifer hudson a great voice but right now I can't listen to anyone other than him singing purple rain.

Felt an emptiness because he wasn't there. Sheila and mayte at the end was moving.
It made me miss him more. There will never be another.
Love you prince.
Baby, you're a star.

I noticed that too, saw a few young'uns texting during the finale. I know I'm getting old, but I just.don't.get.it. Maybe because I've never been a fan of rap, and not knocking anyone's expression of art, it's just that I don't see how a comparison can be made and after watching these shows year after year with different sets of performers wearing the same baggy pants and gold chains with dollar signs on them, doing the same dance routines I just wonder are there very many artists out that that actually sing and play instruments anymore? A dying breed, for sure.

I noticed the same thing. I think this is why I preferred Badu/Bilal/Questlove's take, because "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" seemed like it genuinely intrigued the crowd, and "The Beautiful Ones" was the only moment I felt like they were truly immersed, you could feel the electricty climax just like the song.

Otherwise, I got the vibe (just from the crowd) most of the show probably only appealed to prior fans or people who already remembered Prince.
