I loved the Prince tributes. Every last one of them! I was hoping that Rosie Gaines would have been there. Everyone did a great job and I think he would've been happy.

Maceo Parker too. I hope if the family is still planning something they pull together all the people that were in his bands and just do one long jam session.

These photos bring me to tears. I think this is what i've been missing these past 2 months. Not closure, but just for someone to acknowledge him. This was it. This gesture right here. My eyes will be puffy until morning after all this crying.

I love your quote about acknowledging him. I always feel kinda awkward mentioning Prince's life or death in public, because I don't want to seem too obsessive... "It was two months ago!!" As people will so kindly put it. And of course you always have those people who are going to say, "You didn't even know him!" ...But I remember him saying in his BET Interview with Tavis Smiley that "...We all just want to be known in some respect." And I believe that I've heard that near the end of his lifetime, he just wanted people to know him, to hear what he had to say through his music. This gesture by his friends shows that he IS still on the forefront of many people's minds, and I think this allows us as a community of "friends" (not "fans"- got your back, P!) to acknowledge him in a way that's beautiful, respectful, and tasteful.

I'm so glad someone brought this up. Her comment irritated the hell out of me. Like, I get it. She has a point. But that is not what tonight was about.

When did Mamma Tina say that?

Loved the selection of songs they chose. But I knew it would be great because Stephen Hill at BET is a diehard Prince fam. He's interviewed him beforeso I'm surprised no one sang Adore! I heard Maxwell was going to sing it but decided on NC2U instead. Good move Max! Lol

I hope so too, there was a number of people missing who I was hoping would be included.

I noticed when she held her tight. Man, this is so unreal. I think Mayte did it for me, especially. Her presence was really special. Didn't he once say something along of the lines of "There's no use in playing if Mayte's not up there dancing" or something like that? I know he would have wanted her up there, despite how things ended. Kudos to Sheila for making this incredible.

I definitely think he would've wanted Mayte up there with Sheila. I feel like, despite everything she and Prince went through, they had SO much love for one another.

Bless her little heart, Prince thought very highly of her.

Jhud also said during the backstage segment that Prince used to tell her to use her voice to take people to church so she was just following his advice. cool

I'm so glad you posted this! I didn't know how she was connected to him. No doubt, she has a KILLER voice, I remember that from Idol. But I love that Prince spoke to her about her voice in this way!

Yeah, I think U're talking about what Kevin Smith said when he was working with P. Kevin told him he should play 7, and he said P just said real quietly "No becuz Mayte isn't here to dance." Pretty telling, I think he had a lot of regrets but didn't know how to fix things. sad

Sheila E put it down tonight! Bravo to BET for a pretty decent tribute. Sheila E captured the musical essence of the man tonight perfectly! Although I miss his earthly presence terribly, I am so grateful for what he gave to this world in his lifetime and I hope future generations look to him as a muse in which to seek artistic inspiration.

Mayte & Sheila holding up that guitar just gives me closure and a sad kind of joy. I needed this - them - you guys and am so very grateful to have had this ride with Prince in my lifetime.

Thank you so much purple people.

We are so very very lucky.

A blessing to have had this exquisitely gifted man with us.

nod Is it weird of me to say that it was only until he left us I realized how blessed I am to live the life I am in the time I am? Just thinking back to watching him on TV in the 80's and all the times there after. I feel so very blessed and grateful to have those memories of him and just exsisting in the same time and space. Before this, my thought on the 80's was just shrug eh. Now I can't imagine life without him in it. disbelief

I don't ever remember seeing a better tribute on a show that wasn't dedicated solely to an individual. This was only an award show.

Usually, even a legend, will only get 4-5 minutes, plus maybe a speech segment. Prince must've had about 40 minutes spread out through 5 fantastic performances.

A tribute β€” as Stevie Wonder called his career contributions a couple months ago β€” fitting of an emperor. He is one of if not the greatest songwriters, performers, musicians, and singers who ever lived through the modern era of television.

When you realize that Prince was routinely outdoing these great performances by these brilliant stars and, in many cases, also slithering across the floor while peeling the rest of your face off with his guitar β€” perhaps you, like me, felt the loss, the kindness, and the joy like never before.

Yeah I thought it was voice to from maybe a previous performance. If not, that's a vocal double out there.

From the way it sounded, it sounded like it was him from the Jay Leno performance of "The Everlasting Now." I could TOTALLY be wrong though. Feel free to shoot me down. Lol

It was absolutely from the "Everlasting Now" Leno performance. Have watched that performance so many times that that sound bite introducing Sheila E. is seared in my brain, and I immediately recognized it when I heard it, it made me smile so much smile And I miss him so much. But so proud of how Sheila fucking nailed the whole thing, only she could pull this off.

I didn't take it that way. I think she just meant that prince should have been tributes like this when he was alive. Or like Mj and Whitney too. Too much disrespect like with Bill Cosby when they r alive. We need to cherish them while they r here. I don't think she meant anything negative by the tributes.

When did Mamma Tina say that?
