They didn't do him justice for the tribute they had him sitting right there for.

Janelle Monae's take on "Let's Go Crazy" wasn't great... but the others were. When Patti LaBelle hit that high note right at the end, Prince looked like he was about to cry.

His face was a picture when a pregnant Alecia Keys jumped up on the piano too.

I always felt that Patti's Purple Rain performance wasn not planned, but they came up with it last minute to make up for that Trey Song mess.

SHAAAADDDEE lol

Also, Trey wasn't part of the Prince tribute, he just randomly decided to sing PR during his own perfomance.

Askani, I totally agree with you. The tribute with Alicia Keys and others was not that great to me. I personally thought they could have gotten better performers. I don't think Prince was even impressed. So this tribute has a lot to atone for to me.

IMO, the best musical tribute to Prince can really only be given by people who actually practiced, played and toured with him. It would be nice to see band changes in the tribute to chronicle his growth. It should include a medley of songs, since he did so much great music after Purple Rain. But Let's Go Crazy has to be included. LOL

Sometimes I feel People expect too much out of a Tribute. Kinda like what Questlove was saying re: Madonna's. Prince was the cream of the cream of the cream of the crop. Its obscenely difficult for performers to fill those dainty little high-heeld boots. Its a tribute, not a magical reappearance. I felt the past BET tribute/lifetime cheivement thing was great. Pattie Killed it, Monae Got Crazy like only Monae could, and Alicia Adored him from the top of a Piano..preggo AND sexy. Yeah, her voice faultered, but cut the girl some slack. She even maintained that she wasnt Fuckin Just for kicks. And P didnt fine her either.

It wasnt Small Club, or the Lovesexy VHS, or Musicologhy Acoustic on MTV..but it was a solid performance. Solid enuff to visibly impress the person being honored. I suppose Alicia can sleep at night having recieved Prince's applause, but not yours.

All that said...This BBMA tribute was a hot mess and Madonna needs to be embarrassed....lol. Madonna should have picked a song that could fit into her wheelhouse a WHOLE lot better and not a power ballad that gives the BEST singers a run for their money.

THANK YOU. I find it real funny how everyone thinks they were Prince champions this whole time. I was teased RELENTLESSLY in the 90s for my love of Prince. He was the literal butt of so many jokes and some of them were quite mean spirited. He was called all kinds of names, particularly a word with two Gs in it, the one that starts with f... He didn't get played on white radio, he sure wasn't getting played on black radio, and now only BET can tribute him correctly? Gimme a break. Lenny Kravitz doesn't get played on black radio either... This is garbage and I am just glad I don't need to watch this kind of shit to validate my love for Prince. A bunch of shade all over the place when we should be overcoming some of the veiled nonsense that's been thrown around and work together. I'm sad Prince never saw an end to this madness in his life time and I realize I never will either. [Edited 5/23/16 6:56am]

Anyway!!!!!Whats black radio? Radio changed even the celebs who are charting are only on 4 a min then next onto who is fresh.

Gee I don't know what's BET ? Are you trying to pretend there aren't radio stations that primarily play "r&b, hip hop, and rap, funk, soul" which are predominantly aimed at black listeners? The Steve Harvey show isn't on the classic rock station where I live.

RADIO in the 90s is was rap, gangster rap at that, and Prince wasn't doing that (though he "tried" and got blasted for that too) and thus he was largely ignored by everyone and he's said that himself. He didn't fit anywhere and too be honest, in my opinion, most of the black backlash against him was largely due to his androgynous sexuality that many perceived as "gay" ... And if you think the black community is welcoming of things that even just APPEAR gay, you must be living in a dream world. Cuz religion gets in the way of acceptance and all you have to do is google the "black community and homosexuality" and you can see im not off the mark here. In the 90s when everyone was sporting Air Jordan, Baggie jeans, and Starter Jackets- He was running around in his buttless pants and everyone I knew was calling him the f-word. I heard "Ain't he gay" a whole hell of a lot.

Again, my point of Lenny Kravitz. Go to a Kravitz concert and see who is in the audience, try and find them playing Kravitz on an "r&b" station... but I guarantee when he dies only BET will be able to do his tribute justice and he will suddenly become a "black" icon.

Prince acknowledged and was proud of his blackness but at the end of the day he was once of the few artists who transcended all that. He wanted as many people as possible to hear his music and the message he was trying to get out. LOVE4onenother. But wtf do I know. I've only been hanging on to his every word for the last 30 years.

I'm sorry but it really irks me the amount of shade being thrown. It's really not what Prince would have wanted. Calling Madonna an old white whore... If anyone said that about Beyoncé all damn hell would break loose. I personally am not a huge Madonna of today fan, but like Prince and MJ, she's left a significant mark on music. She freaking blew people's minds when she featured an interracial love affair in a video- the Like a Prayer video was GROUND BREAKING. Acting like she's irrelevant to music or the world of Prince is insane.

Furthermore, I would argue that the people he worked so closely with who may have been better suited to do a tribute are still too heartbroken by this whole thing to have been able to pull that off. It would have been far more of a tribute to just leave an empty mic, a guitar in its stand, and a piano without a player on the stage, bathed in purple light and SILENCE for the entire duration of purple rain. Maybe show pictures of his life in the background. Guaranteed no one would have been respectful of that either and people would be twittering their discontented fingers off the entire time without even stopping to listen to what silence looks like, to reflect on just how quick life passes us by and how we shouldn't take for granted what we have when its here.

I just think BET should have kept their mouths shut and the ad they ran for their awards show was really in poor taste, riding the "she's an old white whore" "she shouldn't be doing this tribute" hysteria. I feel bad for any living artists who are nominated for awards at this event because clearly it's now all been turned into a who can honor Prince the best contest.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

I think she got caught up in her feelings. And you have to remember others may of been asked to sing but, said no.Stevie wasn't the best its raw emotion right now.And by the way they had to get permition from the estate.

That's probably the best idea I've read for a tribute.
I think if the family had already arranged a public memorial, then the Billboard tribute wouldn't have gotten that much negativity.

First the facts......Pred afric american were on bet and several blue eyed souls were as well.and thank god mtv didn't want that music. In the 80's prince was packaged to cross over even with the movie.Thats why in 2016 people still think he is bi racial No i dont think madge should of been called names at all. But,take people with a grain of salt.As far as beyonce goes do u keep up? As far as the black icon goes and who is in the audience well prince handled that. Many people couldn't afford to go to his concerts. He talks about that to george lopez And lopez said thank you to prince for lowering tickets. It not that people of color dont support they buy products trust me we do.Just like nba games .I think you took his singing life and put it as his real life.He is funk and r&b and rock n soul.He was always loved in his community period.I just think many of you didnt know til these videos started popping up.Theres even a video or wendy saying she asked prince why he chose her he said your blond and blue eyed.Whats it matter?Life is too short to player hate.

Janelle had mistaken erratic for energetic. When she screamed "Take Me Away!" and some people dragged her off the stage, Prince was like, "What the hell?." When Alicia Keys started climbing on the piano, Prince started laughing. "Please, somebody stop her. She's pregnant and climbing on the piano. LOL" He probably got a kick out of it. But I can't help but wonder if he thought it was all a bit cheezy.

No I'm sorry you are correct and I agree with you about ticket prices etc. and yes I do keep up- I apologize, I know how they do Beyoncé. She was just the first person who popped in my head. I was trying to think of someone more parallel to Madonna but failed and just went with Beyoncé.

I was speaking from where I came from in the 90s and what my peers were doing- so again I apologize maybe it was more of a generational thing. Nobody I knew was listening to him at that time. I was just the weird white girl who they first assumed was listening to Satan worshipping death metal due to my blue eyes, they who immediately responded with some kind of gay joke when I said no actually I listen to Prince. Mind you I was one of four white kids at school so that was my experience.

I also didnt assume Prince was just his lyrics. I know about a lot of his community service, Rebuild the Dream is exactly what America needs. YESWeCode is amazing and I love his hoodie comment because it is so damn true. I also thought his inclusion of Wendy was because he wanted a multicultural band. I just always thought he wanted us to celebrate where we come from TOGETHER.

I'm sorry I am just a little sensitive to some stuff that I have read on here.

No hate or disrespect to you destinyc1... I just thought the BET ad was unnecessary and in poor taste. I feel like Prince only recently started getting the musical respect he deserves. Everyone, in my opinion, seemed to be really far up MJs ass. So it just kind of bothers me to see any tributes being done. Regardless of who does them.

I'm waiting for what the family puts out for the fans, not necessarily for the ratings.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Who knows what he thought of it, but in his speech he did say that he was pretty wild back in the day and that none of the current artists had to do the same mistakes he did lol. I do think his favorite performance was Esperanza's.

RiotPaisley...I agree with a lot of the things you've said. Back then, my friends didn't want to hear the "Symbol" album or "The Gold Experience". It was all about hardcore hip hop, Jodeci, Boys II Men and Mary J. The closest I got to hearing anything that sounded close to P (with that group) was D'angelo or Meshell. They were all saying he was "washed up" or "gay". He really didn't start getting his respect again until the late 90's, early 2000's.

Well changing your name to an unpronouncable symbol is not a great way to get respect. To be fair, he did do some very wacky things, although the music was always excellent or better.

Yes, and I remember all of those years of them playing music videos that disrespected women. When people referred to it as Black Exploitation Television. I expect it to be as awful -- if not moreso -- than the Billboard tribute.

The perfect tribute would be get together The Revolution, The pre-revolution band, The Sign o the times/Lovesexy band, all the incarnations of the NPG, and 3rd Eye Girl. All on stage jamming together. Get folks like Rosie Gains and Shelby J on the vocals. Get The Time and The Family up there. Get The Twinz and Mayte up there dancing. Have Kim Basinger moaning on stage... Have Ingrid Chavez chase a feather around the stage until she gets hit by a car. Heck, even get Tony M. to spit a rhyme.

I can dig it except Tony and Kim, pull those two and pop Lenny and Sananda up there instead.

I would like to see a mixture of artists who have worked with him, and artists he clealy liked eg. The Time, Sheila E, Chaka Khan,The Revolution, NPG, 3Eyed Girls with D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, The Roots and Lenny Kravitz. No gimmicks or cookie cutter crap! If not on BET, have them at The Grammys for the ultimate jam session. music
