If Prince was still with us, 10+ years from now when the mainstream wouldn't care about him, BET would be the only home he could find. Prince was very concious of his heritage and the plight of musicians like him. Billboard is the one who used Prince for ratings, otherwise they wouldn't have had Madonna do the tribute. There is a looooong list of artists worthy of doing a Prince tribute before Madonna. They could have had Stevie Wonder headline if they truly cared about honoring Prince. Prince knows BET is the only network that can do his legacy justice, and I'm sure he will be smiling from the heavens on June 26th.

Umm, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Prince get an lifetime award at the Billboards back in 2013 and was able to perform as well? Yes, he always had a home at BET and always supported Black artists, but to claim that they will be the only network to rightfully honor Prince is a bit of a bold statement. [Edited 5/23/16 1:31am]

Isn't everyone here major Prince fans? You all are aware of his feelings about black Americans (a group to which he proudly belonged) and black music, right? I am not sure how this is even a debate.

They will do it right because it will be his people doing it - and that is a different kind of love when it is love for a brother. There wont be any old, washed up pitiful whores shamelessly pimping way part their primes to the point of embarrassment on something that Prince wouldn't want represented in association with his memory.

suomynona have you ever seen a BET tribute? Out of all the television networks, I'm sure Prince would not have objected to BET honoring him. It seems you made this topic as a joke, but most people are waiting for the BET tribute. Hope you enjoy it. cool

Yes, and I remember all of those years of them playing music videos that disrespected women. When people referred to it as Black Exploitation Television. I expect it to be as awful -- if not moreso -- than the Billboard tribute.

Well Prince loved and supported BET so...
And did you not see his lifetime achievement tribute in 06?
People love to rag on BET but the awards and them playing homage to the greats is something they ALWAYS get right.

All they have to do is have Wendy walk out on stage strumming the intro to Purple Rain and they've nailed it. Game over!

I dont remember what year it was. but BET did a great Prince tribute to him when Janelle Monet, Alicia Keys, and Esperanza Spalding performed.. I'm sure they will do an even better job with him passing.

The perfect tribute would be get together The Revolution, The pre-revolution band, The Sign o the times/Lovesexy band, all the incarnations of the NPG, and 3rd Eye Girl. All on stage jamming together. Get folks like Rosie Gains and Shelby J on the vocals. Get The Time and The Family up there. Get The Twinz and Mayte up there dancing. Have Kim Basinger moaning on stage... Have Ingrid Chavez chase a feather around the stage until she gets hit by a car. Heck, even get Tony M. to spit a rhyme.

*dead* at kim bassinger moaning. bring back Tamar too!

No, not "ALWAYS. I can't find the video, it looks like someone deliberately took all evidence of it off the net but no one will ever forget the look on Prince's face when Trey Song called himself singing "Purple Rain" at the 2010 BET Awards tribute to Prince.

Like I said in the other thread, I'm still not over their wack ass Michael Jackson tribute, so I've just got one thing to say about this to whomever is in charge over there at Viacom/BET...

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

My dream BET Awards......the whole show is dedicated to Prince....inbetween the other performances, before commercial, some poignant or meaningful clip is showed (talk to Morris he has millions).

The show opens with a clip (film if you have it photos if not) or Prince, Morris and Andre when they first started in the basement......the lights go purple and they play For You. Then you go to "The Band" - Dez, Andre, Bobby Z, Matt and Lisa playing a meddly from the first 3 albums.

The show ends with a 20 minute (at least) tribute to Prince throughout the years, every genre, every decade, his looks and his bands......

Close out with either Nothing Compares or Purple Rain - you know they have to do it

To me that is the only way to do him right.

Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

The snark was meanspirited and a slap to quest stevie and Madonna. So no won't be turning in. What's the point anymore? It will be two months later. These aren't tributes. It's programming designed to get ratings using princes name. [Edited 5/22/16 21:27pm]

Stephen Hill, president of programing for BET knew Prince personally and knew him well. Certainly ratings are always a concern for any type of television programming, but for both him and Debra Lee, its way more than that, its personal, and it's exactly what their audience was thinking and want from them.

Yep, I remember when Stephen Hill got up front with Prince and the band to sing/dance with others, at the show in NYC at 'Butter Restaurant' in 2006 where some fans were able to attend.

THANK YOU.

I find it real funny how everyone thinks they were Prince champions this whole time.

I was teased RELENTLESSLY in the 90s for my love of Prince. He was the literal butt of so many jokes and some of them were quite mean spirited. He was called all kinds of names, particularly a word with two Gs in it, the one that starts with f... He didn't get played on white radio, he sure wasn't getting played on black radio, and now only BET can tribute him correctly? Gimme a break. Lenny Kravitz doesn't get played on black radio either...

This is garbage and I am just glad I don't need to watch this kind of shit to validate my love for Prince.

A bunch of shade all over the place when we should be overcoming some of the veiled nonsense that's been thrown around and work together. I'm sad Prince
never saw an end to this madness in his life time and I realize I never will either.

The whole MJ tribute was a mess because it was rushed. Didn't he pass just a couple of weeks before the BET awards were to air? They changed the whole awards show around at the last minute to make it the whole show a tribute to him, so that's why his tribute seemed rushed. Had they waited and done a proper MJ tribute, there still would had been backlash anyway, so its either damned if you do, damned if you don't. But still, if BET wants to release bold marketing promotions for their Prince tribute, then there isn't any room for failure. Still doesn't guarantee that they will do him justice, but we shall see.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I have never been a huge fan of BET but their award shows have always been decent. After last night's Billboard fiasco, I expect BET to put on a worthy tribute by going old school with people who played with/for Prince on a regular basis. If BET can't properly honor the best complete artist and entertainer of the twentieth century (and part of the twenty first century), they shouldn't exist. Period. If they screw it up, they should hang their head and shut down the network. They can do something historic for Prince's legacy and for the sake of posterity, or they can do something shameful and embarassing. I think they will make an effort to be great. I just hope they can execute. That thing that aired last night lacked conceptual heft (what was their overall vision? whose vision was it? can I speak to him or her?) and it definitely lacked an enjoyable execution. Surely BET can do better--right?

"no one will ever forget the look on Prince's face when Trey Song called himself singing "Purple Rain"....Man, o man!! When I posted on the org (right after the show) about P's expression during that moment, you would have thought I had ripped up a picture of the Pope (Sinead style). Orgers were hurling rocks and daggers at me saying; "Prince loved it!!!" and "He and Shelby were enjoying Trey's mini-tribute..how dare you!!".."Prince told Trey he loved it".."Trey will be the next Prince!!!".. eek ..missfee I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought different.

Janelle Monae's take on "Let's Go Crazy" wasn't great... but the others were. When Patti LaBelle hit that high note right at the end, Prince looked like he was about to cry.

His face was a picture when a pregnant Alecia Keys jumped up on the piano too.

I've been anti BET for years. The awards are usually a hot mess in my opinion. But I'm hoping for Ps's sake, and ours, that they really get this together and pull out all the stops. I have hope that they will, they know what's expected.

Michael died a few DAYS before their tribute show. They had to shoehorn in a tribute and nix Jamie Fox's whole monologue. And Chris Brown was on everyone's sh!tlist that year so they didn't ask him.

thats awesome. Love it.

I thought the BB thing was gonna suck. I kinda expected something bad...but that hot mess was downright terrible and I was embarrased for Stevie and the foul shit Madonna got his ass stuck in. Shit was dowright painful.

BET done him justice b4 and I'm certain they will again. And with the situation being a passing insted of just a tribute to someone still here, they'll really get 'r done. Im excited. BET know who to call...it obviously shouldnt have been the Material girl.
