tGE can't be a masterpiece when "Gold" is on it. One of the worst songs of his career.

Gold is one of his best and most epic songs off that decade.. the 1990s imo... simply an amazing song on a fine masterpiece album.... worship

Also, this isn't surprising. The Eagles best selling record is one of their greatest hits releases.

Casual fans don't support record releases. They buy greatest hits.

https://en.wikipedia.org/...ing_albums

Madonna's greatest hits has almost outsold Like A Virgin and True Blue. Hilarious that both of those records have sold 25 million.

Queen's biggest record is their greatest hits. Same with Bob Marley. Nearly The Beatles. ABBA. Bon Jovi.

You look at that list and see quite a few one hit wonders who wouldn't be able to make a legit "best of."

The only thing missing from it to make it the worst song of his career (see "Graffiti Bridge in the same boat) is that Tony M. doesn't rap on it. That's why "Jughead" wins (or loses) every time.

I think the bigger challenge is finding it in stores.

.
It's just a question of availability and familiarity. People shopping for Prince's music now want the songs they know, not a ten year investment of time and money to start sifting through 30 year old albums full of songs they don't recognize. And I think that's great. If you're buying The Very Best Of Prince now, it very likely means you previously had little to none of his music. It's unfortunate that this collection seems legitimized now when I thought it seemed like a money grab when it was initially released.

Wow! Seriously disagree... Gold is one of the best songs of his career, beats purple rain as an anthem song any day of the week, twice on Sunday! This was prince totally owning stadium rock in the 90's
It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

I have no issue with greatest hits released. It's a good way to enjoy an artist before you delve further. And I'm sure people here compile their own no?

No surprise, as it is a greatest hits compilation meant for the general public, not the die hards.

Still should have Delirious and ICNTTPOYM on it though.

With the exception of specialized record stores (Vintage Vinyl, Electric Fetus), you won't find much of P's past catalog in chain stores. It's usually the greatest hits comps.

I've only seen mainly in USA stores here:

All the 80's albums with exception of Black Album, Diamonds & Pearls, Love Symbol, The Hits/The B-Sides, Phase 1 and Phase 2, Very Best of Prince and Ultimate Prince in stores.

I'm not a big Black Sabbath fan at all, although I own several of their first albums on wax/vinyl. My point is that even being a casual fan, albums are usually so much better to listen to than a bunch of hits thrown together. The listening experience just feels so much better when it sounds like it belongs together. I'd rather watch a good movie, than 30 movie trailers randomly put together in the lenght of a movie.

According to the Global Chart Album Top 40... including the previous Platinum certification for The Very Best of Prince when it was originally released... The current updated number for world wide sales stands at over 4 million copies.

How is that strange... Of course it sold more than those. It would have sold more if Prince Ultimate and the Hits and Bsides wasn't out there too

But I'm not sure why you would find it weird that a greatest hits collection outsells more obscure records like Parade and Lovesexy lol

It's awful... One of the corniest songs he's ever written and he's written quite a few. Most of them work...this one was a major fail
