Anna Stesia and Lucid Dreams We all know that Anna Stesia is a play on the word anethesia to describe a lucid state between here and the spiritual world. That first Piano & Microphone show at Paisley was surreal. He went through his life and career and just before playing Anna Stesia he talked about lucid dreams. At the end he said "liberate me." He has been talking about how he doesn't sleep much for years like in Way Back Home when he says he roams in his dreams. He died during one of these lucid dreams looking for Anna Stesia. Also no coincidence that medicine/anethesia finally put him to sleep.

We don't all know that Anna Stesis is a play on the word "anasthesia" because there is no word spelled "anasthesia" [Edited 5/30/16 4:57am]

play on what word KaresB? Wtf is anaesthesia? That's not a word either. u mean anesthesia as in an anesthesiologist injects anesthesia? u mean Anna Stesia as in a woman's name? u mean Anna Stesia as a metaphor for God? Since when is 'anethesia to describe a lucid state between here and the spiritual world'... does donnyenglish mean anesthesia is interpreted by him as metaphor for a portal to the afterlife? It's very unclear what this thread is even about. Anna Stesia is one of my favorite Prince songs, so please clarify.

If I am not mistaken, anaethesia is the spelling used in the UK..Sort of like colour for color, etc.
So what anyway, we know what the original posters is referring to.

I thought this song was about the night he took Ecstasy with Ingrid Chavez, and had a spiritual epiphany, ultimitely resulting in the cancelation of the Black Album. Didn't Dr. Fink confirm this? "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I thought it was about a visit to the dentist's office. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

This could have been an interesting thread until it was ruined by folks who can't see beyond their nose. As soon as you start talking about the spiritual world, there will be people who don't have a clue what you're talking about and therefore don't know what to do except ridicule it.

Actually, the song he sang right before mentioning lucid dreams was Sometimes it Snows in April since he was seeing friends that have passed away. He ended the first show with Anna Stesia. [Edited 5/30/16 9:53am] Love is God,

Interesting... definitely seems possible (although I'd think, if so, it's probably using "anesthesia" as a sort of general term for an altered state of consciousness that's actually more of a reference to MDMA than to literal anesthesia). I always assumed it was a reference to Anastasia, the Romanov princess (who was the subject of rumors that she had somehow escaped when the Russian royal family was massacred during the revolution and then gone on to live under another name afterwards, thus, becoming a sort of mythical figure). I think she was in her late teens at time (i.e. 1918 when the massacre happened) and she was actually a semi-common pop culture reference at least into the 70s and 80s... for example, she's name-checked in the Stones's "Sympathy for the Devil." The fanciful idea of teenage princess Anastasia Romanov sort of magically slipping away in order to survive when the communists were massacring her family and, decades later, coming to Prince in a sort of lucid dream, ravishing him and liberating his mind seemed like the sort of lyrical content he'd write to me. Maybe it's a reference to both anesthesia and Anastasia at the same time?... the Anastasia Romanov rumors have a sort of "magical" mythical vibe that fit with the song imo [Edited 5/30/16 10:37am]

I read (so it has to be true) it was about a young boy and a prostitute, they actually talked about their deepest desires, one of which was to be close to God. Who knows, only P.

Anna Stesia was always to me on play on anesthesia, she's a woman that takes away the pain of modern life and, in this case, takes him closer to God. I guess it's sort of a small d death that enables a rebirth (again this has parallels with the big D Death and the new life in heaven). But on the whole, it's more about a side of him dying, not literaly about him buying the farm for good.

It just seems like Way Back Home and Anna Stesia are very similar concepts. It also seems like he often talked about not sleeping much and lucid dreams lately. I have always thought that Prince was very close to his spirit and let it guide him. He may not have even fully understood some of his lyrics because he let his spirit guide him. But some of those lyrics and some of those statements make a lotof sense to many of us now. I don't know why there is so much backlash about people "romanticizing" his death. First, I dont think we are romtanticizing anything. Prince has been talking and singing about the afterlife and his death for decades. Prince had a purpose on this earth and he fulfilled it period. Some of us see that others may look at his life and death as a coincidence. I think he had a fate and that fate was something beautiful and I am so lucky to have shared a piece of it with him as a lifelong fan.

I hope no one is trying to argue that the song "Anna Stesia" is not a play with the word "anesthesia".
Just like "Art Offical Age" is "artificial age"

Very well put donnyenglish!! That's what I wanted to read in the beginning of the post!! I've never thought about this until now, but after reading your post, u inspired me! It's the part I put in bold above... I really believe Prince was a prophet. And by prophet I mean someone who has contact or was sent by God to speak for Him, as in serving as an intermediary with humanity, and delivering God's message or knowledge to us. I completely agree with you that Prince must have known that he fulfilled his purpose on this earth. And it seems like to me that he knew he had, that he even knew it was time to go. And you can bash me all you want for thinking and believing he was a real prophet to us and I don't care because that is what I truly believe. I mean, is Prince playing his guitar... Or is Prince simply delivering God's message through his guitar and poetry and frankly everything. Prince was the Chosen One. No one else in this world that I know of had the same gifts and the same platform to deliver it. No one. What I don't get about your post though is Anna Stesia referring to lucid dreams. Please be more specific with this, as in please write down which lyrics specifically make u feel like he is referring to lucid dreams. That would help me understand what you want to discuss further Thanks donnyenglish.

An example would be "Gregory looks just like a ghost and then a beautiful girl the most, wets her lips to say. We can love for a little while, if you can just learn to smile, you and I can fly away." Perhaps Anna Stesia is the beautiful girl taking him from the physical world while he is in this lucid dream to fly away. I think the concept of the song and the play on the word is that he wants to be liberated from the physical world. Perhaps there is some truth that the song arose from an experiment with drugs, but that doesnt change the concept of the song which is he is looking for a way back home. Perhaps Anna Stesia can show him the way.
