Batman album

I listened to the Batman album this afternoon in my car. I have not listened to it for a while.

I was surprised how much I liked it. Good production, especially since it was written for a movie.

This album sounds fresh today. I really like most songs. The Future and Vicky Waiting are great songs. When it was released I was a bit disappointed when I first heard the Batman album after Lovesexy.

I think this album aged better then Diamonds and Pearls. Despite the band sound and the more organic sound on D&P which I liked better at the time. Some D&P songs now sound outdated like Daddy pop, Push, Jughead and Live 4 love. I think he tried too hard to sound contemporary on this album. There are still some great songs left on D&P.

I loved the Batdance and Partyman videos.
Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...
Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

"The Future," "Electric Chair," and "Batdance" are timeless classics. Over 25 years ago they were made and they still sound brilliant. And you know what? Put that album on 25 years from now, those three songs will still sound fantastic.

.

Don't like much of the rest of that album, but those three tunes are outstanding Prince tunes.

It's my go-to-Prince album. I need to be in the mood for certain albums, but Batman soundtrack goes anytime.

Yes, it's the album that also did it for me. It made me happy and took me by surpise.

I've always loved this album, it was the third Prince album I owned. It's not top 5 for me, but definitely top 10. Especially love Electric Chair and Vicky Waiting.

speakeasy

I thought the weird electronics and stuff signaled a new direction for Prince. I think that record has such a distinct production sound. A lot of it feels experimental and weird.

I too was disappointed when he went down a more polished, slick and mainstream route with D&P...

The big disappointment. I was on such a Prince high after Lovesexy, I was hoping for the next album to be just as uplifting, just as fantastic... And then we got this. faint
The only thing missing from this album was an O'Jays cover: Money Money Money Moooooney!
No Prince album was ever such a great letdown as this. After this we got Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls and I just gave up expecting a great Prince album ever again. Those days were forever gone. But just like Pandora's box, deep, deep, deep down, almost hidden, there's always hope. That hope was fed by the tours, the bootlegs, the occasional good tracks on the albums... But never again would he unravel an album as great as Lovesexy. That was the sign of the times we would be living in from 1989 onwards...

I was 80% on it at first. I think I just disliked a couple of tracks, and was letting it spoil the whole thing for me. But I never hated it. Of course I was obsessed with "Batdance" when it came out. "Trust" was a great song. I think "Trust" was the border line of Prince almost, but not quite, embracing a canned hollow sound that resonated in the next couple of years in his music. Noted are remixes from Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds & Pearls, & prince. Not all of them were, but there are a few moments of "oh shit, it sounds like the radio!". Kinda had a touch of that on some Lovesexy era remixes. BUT, having said all that, it's still a favorite.

.

I once made a playlist of remixes from Batman to make a newer take on the record. I think it went something like:

  1. The Future (Remix)
  2. Electric Chair (Remix)
  3. The Arms of Orion
  4. Partyman (Video mix or Purple Party Mix)
  5. Vicki Waiting (Live, from NPGMC release)
  6. Trust
  7. Lemon Crush
  8. The Scandalous Sex Suite
  9. Batdance (a bigger mix of the Batmix and Vicki Vale mix)

.

It was a fun play list to toy with.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

He did this album to replenish his finances and he still was a hitmaker.

Arms of Orion and Trust feel too derivative though, and like many I'd replace them with Dance to the devil and 200 Balloons, respectively.

200 Balloons and Batdance really are just a different bunch of the same samples, but Dance With the Devil would have made this album 100 times stronger! I read somewhere (I can't remember where) that Prince left this track off the album because he felt it was too dark and negative. Such a shame. Would have made all the difference.

Wasn't this song also like 8 minutes long. I agree, it would have been nice on the album. I think Raven2TheJoyFantastic was also recorded around this time and would have been nice on the album too.

On a side note, has ever leaked a pristine quality version of "Dance With The Devil"?!?

All versions I have (also the latest, like that in BFTP 3.0) are in near-mono and muffled sound.

I don't know if I missed it or simply it doesn't leaked again.

Nice mix. I'm going to borrow it, but leave out Arms of Orion and add Rave and Dance with the Devil.

4. I strongly prefer the Video Mix. "The Purple Party Mix" is a nice little mess.

5. I would use the "Vicky Waiting (Extended Remix)" leaked some years ago, it is of high sound quality.

6. Here there would be the Shep Pettibone Remix, but unfortunately contrary to VW it leaked in not perfect sound.

7. I would let in only for the original's sake. I strongly dislike the song.

Batman is such a fun album. Simple, heavy dance beats, goofy lyrics, that sardonic tone. My only problem with it is that it feels a little light. A couple darker tracks could have beefed it up a little more.

I made my Batman heavier too. Here's my Batman playlist. I generally enjoy the album more with the B-sides mixed in.

Disc 1

  1. The Future
  2. Electric Chair
  3. Arms of Orion
  4. Partyman (Video Mix)
  5. Feel U Up
  6. Vicki Waiting
  7. I Love U in Me
  8. We Got the Power (optional. can't seem to find a cleaner version.)

Disc 2

  1. Sex
  2. 200 Balloons
  3. Trust
  4. Lemon Crush
  5. Scandalous!
  6. Dance with the Devil
  7. Batdance

It's a solid, very enjoyable album, but, my least favorite up to that point. Batdance might be the strangest #1 single of all time, but that only adds to the charm/fun, and Scandalous is one of my favorite Prince slow jams. The Future and Lemon Crush smoke, too.

Agreed, but the next best one, for me, is Batman and Robin, with The Smashing Pumpkins, Moloko, Arkarna, Jewel, Me'Shell N'Degeo'cello, Eric Benét, R.E.M., and more.
