Darling Nicki in the Purple Medley

Is there a longer version of this Darling Nikki version available somewhere or did he just record this one line for the Purple Medley?

"She said how'd you like to waste some time and I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind"

4 seconds better than the whole other 10 minutes IMO.

While this isn't an answer to your question, I'd just like to point out that I like the idea of the Purple Medley. The production makes me wanna hurl, but some moments are actually pretty awesome! I love the Irrestible Bitch/Sexy MF mashup in there and thought 777-9311 and A Love Bizarre blended into each other pretty well.

As for your question, wasn't Prince talking about wanting to rerecord his discog around this time, so there could be WB versions of his albums and his NPG rerecordings? Maybe a rerecorded Darling Nikki is in the vault somewhere.

.

And thankfully that rumor of re-recording everything was before he became a JW -- so the lyrics were unlikely changed -- IF -- a HUGE if -- he re-recorded everything, which is unlikely.

.

I can't imagine anyone preferring a new version over the original. I mean, even his most recent re-recordings/mixes weren't as good as the originals.

I remember reading an interview with a sound engineer who worked at Paisley that Prince did indeed rerecord his whole back catalog. Still not sure if it's true or not - anyone in the know?

I cannot imagine him re-recording entire albums...

We're talking about someone who shot music videos for entire unreleased albums only to be locked away in the vault...

I've also love the Darling Nikki part!...It would be really great if he did record a full version of it.

Yeah, but those videos were for "new" music, not 20 year old albums...

Yeah, I doubt anyone would prefer a new version of any of his already released output. It's just a curiousity thing for me. And sometimes it is nice to have alternate versions of his released songs when they're songs like the '95 version of Starfish and Coffee. I actually dig that version, though not as much as the original.

I remember reading a note from Prince on his old website alluding to the project being aborted after realizing that while he can physically rerecord his old songs, he can't recapture the in-the-moment inspiration of the originals.

Now that you mention it, I remember this as well.

I feel like I remember hearing/reading band members say that the medley was recorded specifically as is, and that it's not a pieced together medley of other newly/rerecorded material. In other words, there is no newer longer version of "Darling Nikki", where a snip was used for "The Purple Medley". Heck, you can even tell it was recorded by his band as a whole, like any other song the NPG saw, came, and conquered like they always did.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
