Purple Rain may become Prince's biggest song ever

Since Prince's death. Purple Rain has reenter Billboards top 100. Me personally I hope it goes number 1,
but at the same time it might over take When Doves Cry as Prince's best selling single. What do you guys think.
why in God's name do u wanna make me cry

It is actually number 1 on digital songs in the USA. WDC was a minor hit safe for the USA where it sold 2.5 millions.

All around the world PR is the most Prince's dowloaded song.

Anybody know since when one can donwload legally the WB catalogue ? Because i can't believe that since 2003 it sold only 1 million dl in the USA.

Overall, Prince's dowload catalog sales is very weak in termo of sales, besides the wake of his death.

CynicKill

He alienated a lot of people when he was alive by being so abstruse.

He seemed to be in direct conflict with any type of marketing throughout his career.

According to setlist FM, Purple Rain was already the song he played the most live, by a large margin (no surprise). Plus all those TV appearances, including the Superbowl. WDC comes in at #7. In Canada I'd say WDC had more airplay, but these last few years people knew him more for Purple Rain. Look at the response to his passing - almost all the tributes have been Purple Rain, he's always positioned it as the signature song. As for song sales... no comment.

not a big fan of the song on record.

huge fan of when he coaxed it from us live until we gave it freely, especially the "oooh ooh ooh-ooh ooooh". I would belt that shit til the tears flowed, and now they're flowing freely 'cuz he's never gonna make me do it again.

It was never one of my favs either. Except for a handful of singles my favorite Prince songs are usually the non singles or the more obscure songs

I can't find actual numerical sales figures, but according to Billboard as of June 2013, When Doves Cry is his #1 single with 5 weeks at #1. Purple Rain is not #2. It's at #8 behind Kiss, Let's Go Crazy, Cream, Batdance, Raspberry Beret and U Got the Look, so it has a little catching up to do.

Dig if U will the picture of U and Marvin Gaye and the kids.

It's at #4 on the Hot 100

I would like to see it hit #1 but you have new releases from Drake and Beyonce which will have a much larger promotional push. Death has a side effect of creating an organic interest, but that organic interest has to compete the marketing dollars that are being used to prop up both Drake and Beyonce with their new releases. After "Panda" is done being the flavor of the month I think it will be Drake's "One Dance" vs. "Purple Rain" competing for that spot - whereas "Purple Rain" has the biggest gains and digital sales, "One Dance" has the biggest gain in airplay. It could end up being Drake's first solo #1. "Purple Rain" had a peak position of #2 so if it gets to the top of the charts it would be a new #1 to add to Prince's totals, that would be great for his legacy. But it's unlikely that the digital sales increase will sustain for much longer

How can some of you say "Purple Rain" isn't one of your favorites? What is this, 'Prince Fan: Hipster Edition' - "Purple Rain" is one of the greatest songs ever made

Thinking a song is the greatest or not is entirely subjective opinion but even if someone agrees it's a good song, that doesn't mean it's a favorite. I have a LOOOONG list of Prince songs I enjoy before I get to Purple Rain. ...are you one of those people that feels threatened if people don't agree with your own likes? lol

Calling an inssue subjective is a complete cop-out. This is totally quantifiable

It seems that it´s ´easier´ to cover than other songs that have very specific arrangements. And it´s indeed a great song. I believe it will be THE song people associate Prince with.

- Maybe I got tired of soooo many live versions. Different from other songs, Prince didnt change much of the arrangement on live versions of PR. But it´s epic, and a truly great song
