I put on AOA today, and "Clouds" made me very sad, especially after last night's article about the doctor from CA.
"Breakdown" right after was not good for me either.
When it first came out, I didn't like the light saber sounds, but today they actually made sense sonically, and the song seemed to be much deeper and sadder thinking of his chronic pain, and also losing his child, his marriages. I think that song is directed to God.

I'm built to face things up, I don't find it healthy to not deal with my emotions.

I have also taken care of people who were dying, and I mean all the work except things like injections, people very close to me, so in that situation you often have to hold the tears and help as efficiently as you can.

In prince's case, it is from afar, so I tried a couple of songs I knew would be tough. I graduated to The Breakdown and Hardrocklover last weekend. This last one is surreal, like he intended it to sound haunting. The Breakdown sounds cathartic.

There's a couple of songs I'm not going out of my way to hear just yet, like SISIA. But I withstood Empty Room and A Case of U, so I guess soon it will be time for SISIA and Condition of the heart.

The Affirmation tracks from AOA just killed me. I had forgotten about the spoken word parts of the album. It just hear it as what would be said to him after he passed into another plain. It just cut too deep.

Little Red Corvette makes me choke up without fail and Purple Rain just hurts.

That song has always made me cry since the 1st time I heard it, every single time. No other song in the world does that to me... But I can't listen to Purple Rain and SISIA right now, I haven't heard Paisley Park because I thought it was suppose to be in my heart but right now it's not and Gold, Future Soul Song and Last December make me cry but I still listen to them.
We could have big fun 💜

Future Soul Song is tough for me because I heard him sing it live...and it was so much more beautiful than on the CD.

It's different for me. I listened to most of the songs mentioned here. Sometimes It Snows... Lonely Christmas... Open Book... The ones I cannot bring myself to listen to are the ones on Emancipation where he sang about how happy he was with his wife and upcoming child. sad

I'm still not able 2 listen 2 him for more than a minute or 2 at a time (or watch him). I'm finding myself randomly singing little snatches of song's tho. The line I keep coming back 2 the most is "But life is no fun, life ain't no fun without fantasy. And some things are better left unsaid & some people are better left untrusted. Maybe, maybe it'll all make sense..." .....yeah, I can't write those last 3 words.
"We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

In retrospect, it's been rather startling how many times he's referred to death and dying in his songs throughout the years. Violet the Organ Grinder came on during my shuffle today, and hearing the "I'll die but I won't go away" verse knocked me back for a second.

I'd always considered that as one of his more inoccuous, throwaway songs and I'd never given that verse a second thought before.

Thank you for mentioning. It surpised me how many songs have a reference to death, even the uptempo ones. Besides the obvious There's Others Here and Lonely Christmas, death is very present in 1999 and Crystal Ball. Partying until the apocalypse, but not just that, also loving or being spiritual: Eye No (untill my dying day), Adore (end of time) and Letitgo (better of dead if I can't be alone). Ouch. They all hurt. Still.

The Love We Make was the hardest thing for me, especially the last part:

"Sacred is the prayer that asks for nothing,
While seeking to give thanks for every breath we take,
Blessed are we inside this prayer
For in the new world we will be there,

The Only love there is, is the love we make..."

Also Sometimes it snows in April and his last live performance of Nothing Compares to You in Atlanta. I happen to have seen the (close up) video of it before the web sheriff removed it, so I cannot listen to it now without remembering the strong emotion going through him whilst he sang with a torn voice. But I still listen, it's all part of the mourning for me. I feel it's hard but necessary.

My aunt is a cardiac nurse, so she isn't a stranger to steeling herself in the face of difficulty, either. Kudos to you! It sure takes a strong resolve. On the other hand, she allows herself to feel just enough, so she doesn't get desensitized. She gives a piece of herself to everyone she treats, & visa versa.

In our case, the fans, I think it's healthy to acknowledge the pain. As morbbid as it may be, sometimes it's a great teacher. Who was it that once said, with great love there is great loss? I am thankful to have loved so deep, even if it was a love of music...

That being said, The Beautiful Ones really hits home. Even just watching a clip from his piano rehearsal tears at me. & the knowledge that that was the name for his pending memoirs... sad

a lot of songs from Emancipation for various reasons

songs with lyrics that didn't seem that important before suddenly seem very hard hitting indeed, and others with potentially inappropriate titles.

My Little Pill

Dig U Better Dead

Rock and Roll Is Alive (And It Lives In Minneapolis)

Sacrifice Of Victor

There Is Lonely

and the cover of the Come album with the year dates no longer seems to have any context...

in spite of the subject matter and lyrical content, the music is still great, and in time, will get easier to listen to, as many of us will be able to 're-discover' his music all over again.

This is what it's like in the dream factory...

Yesterday I was listening to the Purple rain show from New Years Eve 1984, specifically Purple Rain. At the very end of Purple Rain Prince says, "Dallas, thanks for spending New Years with us. Listen, God gave us all another year to live. Let's make it a good one." I pretty much lost it after that ...

Anna Stesia. Really - just don't.

Have you ever been so lonely that you felt like you were the only one in this world?

I was driving down I-90 to Chicago the day after he died and they played it on the radio. I couldn't see the road for the tears.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I've only just been able to listen to anything at all in the last couple of days. I had 20ten on in the car today because I didn't think its songs would upset me. Wrong! Beginning Endlessly and Future Soul Song were especially tough and I cried all the way home.

You know the other day I tried to break my focus away from Prince and play anything but him for one day. It was nice though I didn't stop thinking about P I assumed it was working until the next day I put on Prince, I actually felt happy so I'm realizing I just need to hear his voice right now
