Van Jones Appreciation Thread

Van Jones is the most important associate post-Princes passing doing interviews at the moment. And I stand by that.

I didn´t even know who Van Jones is until Prince passed away, and then I googled him and found out about him.

Hearing Mr.Jones talk about Prince and the friendship they had and the good things Prince did is one of the most soothing things for me at the moment.

Most of the media focus on Prince´s legacy, his hits, a lot of trivia for the casual listeners and how great he was but Van Jones brings to attention how Prince was as a person, a friend and a humanitarian, and what a positive influence he´s had on the people he´s touched in his life, not just through his music but through his personality, and that is something that the media doesn´t and cannot really focus on, unless in some rare interviews with the likes of Mr. Jones , or Paul Westberg and his touching words in Rolling Stone, or close associates.

-

-

I also watched footage of Larry Graham, Sheila , Tyka Nelson and all those fans mournig outside Paisley Park and what they said and how they spoke of him but for some reason that made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

-

Listening to Van Jones makes me incredibly sad but so far he´s one of the few interviewed people whose words and behaviour touched me the most and help me cope with the situation.

Which has a lot to do with how honest, eloquent , how real and sympathetic Mr . Jones comes across in the two interviews that I have seen so far.

His focus on Prince as a human being and dear friend is a relief compared to the usual articles and news footage.

Agreed. Larry and Sheila looked more like they were going to a meeting with an accountant, than to a memorial for a friend.

I'm not saying they should be wailing & crying on their knees... But the lack of any emotion bothered me. Sheila wearing white and not black bothered me.

Tyka holding a bag of Cheetos, while someone else carried the ashes bothered me also. Many fans have been unable to eat at all.

I have never believed that Larry Graham had Prince's best interests at heart. Sheila very publicly distanced herself from Prince in the last few years. They presumably reconciled their friendship - but nobody knows to what extent.

Seeing Carmen Electra crying seemed real to me. I know that people process grief differently, but I'm an emotional person. Seeing people not having an emotional response is alien to me.

I got the feeling Larry and Sheila weren’t too crazy about all of the cameras around. It has to be tough grieving for a friend, made worse with all these paparazzi swarming around trying to get a story for sleazy outlets like TMZ. Their reaction definitely made me take a step back and feel a bit guilty for just looking at the pics, and contributing to that process in any way.

People react to and deal with grief in different ways. I wouldn't judge anyone at a time like this, especially when they're under the spotlight of the media. Anyway, it was obvious to me in all the videos I've seen of Sheila that she is really suffering at the moment.

The insight Van gives to Prince the person is fascinating. It's interesting to hear how Prince pushed people in everything they did, not just when it came to getting up on stage. Prince was a good friend and supporter of Van, but it seems clear to me that Van must have been a good friend to Prince, too. That makes me happy.

I apprecaited Van telling us these things so much and how Prince toured in the trouble places to really see what the places were going through then he actively did something. Made me feel proud to be a part of the Prince Fam and of him.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I just searched for it. She's distraught.

She said that she went to 11 of the 21 night residency at the O2 Arena in London.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Naomi was standing right next to me (and then behind me) at an aftershow 22 years ago.

I knew that she liked him but I wasn´t aware that they were close.

Well.. Van the Man just got me crying again. He's such a great guy, I've been following him on Twitter and Upworthy on FB since Prince did that interview a few years back and I learnt of Van Jones. He is so smart, so compassionate and I'm so happy Prince had such a good friend. I can just imagine how painful it must be for him to talk about Prince in the past tense.

.

By the way: To posters who think 'wearing white' to a funeral or not crying is strange, remember, that some people in shock just can't cry. Secondly, Sensation ID&T (now a global event) started as a funeral/party celebration for the brother Duncan Stutterheim who died under 20 many years ago. Everybody wears white as a celebration of life.

I believe that was Tyka's son carrying the Prince's ashes. I think focusing on what his close friends or family were wearing to the memorial service, really shouldn't be an issue. Those are the people who had personal and close relationships with him and knew him the best. We are fans that only knew him by his music and concert performances, and on the outside looking in, and not as a personal friendship, like Larry, Sheila and Van had with him. I only hope his legacy doesn't get exploited and his family protect it. May he rest in peace.

Good to see Van Jones sharing his friendship about Prince and keeping it respectful.

Remember he lost his job there.

And...just because he worked there does not mean that he isn´t sad. He obviously is, don´t you think ?

If this interview says anything, it's that no matter how obsessive you were a Prince fan, no matter what minute details you kept in the data bank... You really didn't know squat. And that was by design. Even people like Van who became close friends didn't really know Prince's relationships from person to person.

Sheila E is on interviews crying, and looks torn up. Let her be.
People tighten up a lot when going to these things, some people fall a part, some people turn to stone.
.
There is no rule to what color a person should wear to funeral. In Ghana they wear red.
When my grandmother passed the family wore tans and white.
.
People eat(especially women) when depressed or sad. Maybe she felt she would drop the urn/ashes. It would make sense if someone is physically a wreck or shaking, that you let someone who has their composure to carry it. If Tyka dropped those ashes people would be ready to stone her.

.

Sheila distanced herself from the business aspect of Prince. After being booted from the tour and her family being replaced from some shows. She felt she needed to put her and family musically at her best interest. She and Prince had reconciled since.

.

When I was 9 a friend of ours died from a brain tumor. When I was at his funeral, my other friend was falling all over the the pews crying. I was standing had still and hard as a stone. I could not process what was happening, I was shaking inside, by stomach felt like the first drop on a roller coaster. But I was still as stone. The man as saying we'll see him again, and I began calculating the time I had to wait to see him again. I assumed that I would like to be about 90(longevity in the family) so I that number disturbed me. I was grieving.
