I'd actually love that. I wanted to take my girlfriend to see him live, but of course that's never going to happen. I suppose SOTT in the movies might be the next best thing.

I actually emailed a local theater that's playing Purple Rain this week about playing SOTT. Here's the response:
"Thanks for the note. I forwarded your request to the Programming department and they did look into the possibility of screening Sign O’ the Times. The found that there is no way of getting license to play the movie because it was never distributed. The only way to view the movie today is through bootlegged copies of the film, and we obviously wouldn’t be able to do that. We really appreciate the suggestion and that you took the time to write. I’m afraid that we simply can’t do it. Sorry about that!"
Is this true? How do I respond?

I went to see it when I lived in Philadelphia. I remember standing in line (one of the only white guys there, LOL), and a dude at the door (he had either just come out, or he was the ticket taker) yelled down the line "PRINCE DIES AT THE END!" It was a momentary "AWWW MAN" until everyone else remembered it was a concert movie. . But to see SOTT on the big screen, might be a tad better than seeing Purple Rain again. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Isn't there a lot of legal issues that have prevented it's distribution in the past?

I would shit twice and die. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Probably because it wasn't distributed by a big company like WB. I believe it was "Cineplex Odeon Films," which has since been shut down (according to https://en.wikipedia.org/...deon_Films ). I don't know the legality involved in a theater showing a DVD, since the discs explicitly say for private, not public use. I have a feeling the theaters showing PR, UTCM and GB just called up their WB distributor, or the distributor called them and offered it to them. Just my $0.02 Chas

Probably because it wasn't distributed by a big company like WB. I believe it was "Cineplex Odeon Films," which has since been shut down (according to https://en.wikipedia.org/...deon_Films ) These film titles would have been acquired by another corporation, just glancing at the history, I'd say it's Universal. However, IMDB lists Paisley Park and Purple Films as producers along with Cineplex Odeon Films, which is likely the reason the film is not on DVD/Blu-Ray in the U.S. If you found a film distributor with an actual film print, you could probably legally play it with clearance from whoever owns it. It's likely whichever corporation bought Cineplex Odeon Films doesn't even know SOTT is their property. These corporations are so huge, and it was not a big selling film, that's just how these things often go.

I went to see it in the theater when it was released and there were probably 15 people tops in the audience.

I saw it Dec 87 in Houston at some theater. I was there visiting my mother. Then I saw it again at a midnight movie. I think that was Oct 1988 (after Basic and AIT in the ARMY) but it could have been april or May 88 just befor i went in. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"
