Just wondering what could happen to stuff such as the contents of his laptop. Potentially it could contain a lot of unreleased music too (which is obviosly something that will be inherited), while I don't think anyone would have the right to crack his password and go through his personal files, correspondence etc.

I disagree. Fans probably only know a small fraction of what's availble. A team of curators, perhaps, but committees like that can descend into bickering and indecision.

I don't think the intention with the fan input idea was for that input to be based solely on what we know is circulating. I was thinking it was more intended to use them as part of the decision process, to get an idea of what the fan base might like to see released.

E.g.

Vault Team : "Hey look, we've found 18 versions of Purple & Gold, let's ask the fan delegation if they think that would make a good release."

yes i think someone with a 'fan' knowledge of his unreleased music should be involved in someway to make sense of the masses of work in the vault, as much as Sheila E. or Eric Leeds or Wendy and Lisa might be best suited to produce the music - they are not fans of his music like we are - they know how he worked and what he liked, but they haven't been following the bootleg releases with any interest or listening to his music for years. i think Questlove and D'Angelo would be good to have involved, but again they really only love the early 80s era. maybe there are already Crystal Ball type collections ready to go in the vault? although no sloppy editing or segueing please!

for instance we still really need the full version of Crucial (the CB version was faded early). although what full lenght version? the guitar only version or the sax version?

Another greatest hits seems more likely if you ask me.

Warner Bros is still in the picture...

unfortunately... but at some point they will try to win extra $ from this for sure !

I bet on it, although I hate to assume shit.

-

this could be the step up to a younger audience..

Now they heard the name

(my 22yo nephews don't know who Prince is,

neither ever heard of Purple Rain.. just think this is reality anno 2016..)

Warners sure is ready, probably waiting in all silence, and then 'hit 'n run'

or something like that.

I agree. Release them as a series. Starting with the remasters of the albums. All of them. And then unreleased albums as part of a Vault Series. Albums, collections, live albums and what I am really hoping for is video releases Blu Ray or whatever of classic concerts from every tour. He has the original high quality video recordings of so many concerts as well. Not sure how many were just a single camera for him to watch back and how many were multi camera professionally filmed.

The Peach and Black guys also heard he has unreleased extended versions of classic released tracks too, like 20 min version of Adore. It would be amazing if every album had all the remixes, b-sides and extended versions and tracks from the same sessions that were left off the albums. We could be talking 2 or 3 CD sets of every album, remastered.

Who knows whats in the Vault. But whoever is in charge of what's released I hope will consult with band members, those close to him, people like Susan Rodgers and even some fans, who know what will result in the best representation of the Vault Material for all invovled.

I would also be concerned if they bring in a producer who might mess with the tracks. No doubt they will need to be worked on but I wouldn't want to see someone change their intended sound.

We just have to hope the Vault is respected as Prince would have wanted. It shouldn't be rushed, it should be handled with grace and dignity. But yes we all want to know what's in there.

I agree with most of this post. In terms of fan involvement I kinda want someone really knowledgeable like Boris Fishpaw or the guys that run princevault or something.

I heard an interview with Brent Fischer on BBC 5live Friday morning, he said that out of every 25 songs him and his father (Clare) contributed to only 1 was released. He also advised he believed the Vault may be destroyed as per Prince's wishes.

I do hope not, i belive the Vault should be used solely to produce income for the charities Prince was involved in and give the fans a complete body of work as possible to celebrate this great man.

I would t be at all surprised if it's empty - I remember him saying that when's gone it's gone - he didn't want any meddling with his stuff but who knows maybe he changed his mind.

There is some encryption that cannot be "hacked" with current technology so hopefully he had good people to have him set up like that. We just have to hope he didn't encrypt any unreleased songs like this.

John Blackwell mentioned on my radio show last night that he saw a small peek inside the door of the vault. But he didn't want to get caught looking in. So he kept his distance. John did say that Sheila's drum set from the Sign O The Times tour was inside the vault door.

Matt Pierson (who is this guy ??) apparently thinks he's qualified and already has some very BAD ideas (bad as in bad, not good):

EDIT: He's edited his original post, which in the last paragraph included the suggestion to "destroy anything which is not of historical interest".He kinda still defends that idea in his responses to comments to his original post.

On his unreleased music:

I've never said this before, but I didn't always give the record companies the best song. There are songs in the vault that no one's ever heard. There are several vaults; it's not just one vault.

Are there full unreleased albums?

Yeah, I like time capsule stuff. I have a couple Revolution albums in the vault and two Time albums, one Vanity 6 album … and tons of stuff recorded in different periods. But so much gets recorded that you don't have time to compile everything. In the future you could put all the best stuff from one particular time period together and then you can release it. It'd just be like if we found a Sly and the Family Stone album and they saved their best stuff. If that's even possible!

from the 2014 rolling stone interview:

http://www.rollingstone.c...e-20160422

Dream Factory

Roadhouse Garden

Both unreleased albums by Prince & The Revolution are the ones I want to buy the most. cool

I'm a greedy bastard. I wanna hear the unreleased stuff. Every since Sign O the Times I've always craved double albums. That's what I loved about Emancipation. I'd be cool with a five CD set.

With no will I think this music will end up being sold to Warner bros or alternative record label for big money and release slowly over years to come. Better than being destroyed, but not what the Boy wanted

Prince wrote plenty of songs between 1985-1988. It's just something about those 4 years where he has loads of musical ideas.

Why destroy it? What a terrible wast of art.

I'm happy to see remasters from the beginning in the same way Page just produced Zeppelin's albums. Original album plus one of bonus material. Three released quarterly in all formats.

Additional releases of Vault stuff could come out twice a year I guess.

Meanwhile, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has also been told Bremer Bank, recently appointed trustee of Prince’s estate, hired a St. Paul company to drill through Prince’s personal vault at Paisley Park Tuesday. Sources said the bank had to move quickly to get inside the vault because, as court-appointed trustee, Bremer is legally responsible for safeguarding and handling all of Prince’s assets.

The vault is known to store Prince’s invaluable recordings, of which, dozens have not yet been released. Prince was the only person who knew the combination, which is the reason Bremer Bank had to hire someone to drill through the lock to retrieve and take inventory of its contents.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Unless it has been authorised by Prince (and that is highly unlikely) it is illegal.

I still find it hard to believe Prince has no will or estate plan. It's still possible he has one and that it won't be released until after the cause of death is released (I think).

However, if he indeed had no will, then ultimately his estate will be divided among his heirs, which are Tyka and his three half-siblings. I doubt any of them would want assets; my experience has been in that situation that everyone would prefer cash.

Which means that assets such as the vault recordings would have to be converted to cash one way or another. Most likely through the sale to a third party, whose plan would be to sell songs and recordings as quickly as possible in order to make their investment back.

That's my thinking right now, but it's definitely subject to change.

I know there's been quite a few of these radio broadcasts by bands released in recent years... off the top of my head I've seen Sparks, Talking Heads, Cyndi Lauper all sold in shops.

http://www.talking-heads....ive-albums

"These albums are not authorized by the band, but seem semi-legal as they were originally legal broadcasted in the U.S."

I have no doubt that it's unauthorised but there might be some legality that allows them to come out. My point is if someone tried to to do this in the past Prince would go out of his way to fight it, now he's gone it seems they're immediately releasing them.
