Interesting viewpoint http://blogs.spectator.co...very-good/ There’s a good reason why Prince didn’t release his archive – most of it isn’t very good Because so much of the vault’s contents have leaked over the years, fans with realistic expectations know roughly what will be available posthumously. They also know that most of the tracks that were banished were simply not good enough, and Prince’s untimely death doesn’t change that.

The writer of that article, Daniel Jackson, comes off as a typical known-it-all that doesn't know what he's talking about. We haven't even heard most of what's in the vault because most of the songs weren't stolen from Pailsey Park and bootleged in the '80s and '90s, unless Susan Rogers is lieing when she says, "When I left in 1987, it was nearly full. Row after row of everything we’d done. I can’t imagine what they’ve done since then."

THIS! Perfect assessment of Daniel Jackson's ridiculous opinion. The man needs to do us all a favor and keep his pompous ass opinions about Prince's estate and his library of works to his moronic self!

If the heirs want to make good money they should release his final two concerts as a DVD and CD first before going back in time...

Since his Lovesexy tour where he did 20 minutes on the piano I always wanted to see him do a piano show. And finally after all those years, he's doing a piano tour and dies before hitting Europe... sad

The tracks on those alive in the vault youtube's have been circultating for years. Sorry though, I don't have links. It's worth noting that it's against the rules to ask for links around here.

Many of the unreleased tracks are being taken down from YouTube, but more seem to spring up constantly.

Eventually these songs will be released in pristine quality... we can hope.

Doesn't seem like it will be fast or easy to release the vault material. Seems like the project would need to negotiate with the individual contributors/collaborators. Perhaps that's why Revolution or Time tracks haven't seen light of day. All it would take is one person in an entire group refusing to accept an offer to make the project a questionable effort.

You've got to go through all that stuff and organize it too and that is, in itself, a huge project that will take some time.

The link to the article about the 99 items in the vault is fascinating. As a huge Bob Mould fan, the "Bockwinkel" project caught my eye. Nick Bockwinkel was a professional wrestler, and Bob is huge into pro wrestling, so this seemed plausible.

However, Bob posted on his Facebook that he never spoke to Prince. What a shame given that Bob is also a Minneapolis icon. It seems strange that this report emerged with a tinge of facial accuracy, but needless to say I entirely credit Bob's statement that he never spoke to Prince.

Yea I noticed the Nick Bockwinkle project too. Nick was AWA world champion and the AWA was a Minnesota based pro wrestling territory. There is also a Morris Day narrated documentary about another pro wrestler Koko B Ware who had The Bird by The Time as his theme music for a while. I don't know if this list is legit though as some of it seems a bit implausible. The Koko doc if true is interesting since he was a upper lower/midcarder in the WWF which is like the big leagues for pro wrestling. To my knowledge he didn't work the AWA territory, mainly the UWF/Mid South and in Memphis for the CWA.

I have read before in a old article where it says Prince did impressions of the Crusher et AL who of course were part of Verne Gagnes AWA. So not sure if Prince was a wrestling fan but its a possibility. Jim Ross who worked for the WWF confirmed that Michael Jackson was a fan and he met up with some of the wrestlers at Neverland so I think there are quite a number of famous celebrities who like wrestling. Ozzy was at WrestleMania II, Alice Cooper at WrestleMania III, Cyndi Lauper at WrestleMania I and others throughout the years too. Ultimate Warrior was in a Phil Collins music video also.

Ok, last night while looking at some prince vids, I ran across this disturbing slew of unreleased Prince music, someone name Keith McCrary have been releasing what he calls Prince Ivault dating from 77 up to 2015 how in the heck did he have access to this stuff, I admit I clicked on the 1977 stuff, then I felt soooo guilty, because I know this is something Prince would have had a fit over-

Omgosh, if this version of the vault has been circulating for a while, I can't imagine what the "TRUE" vault has within it's golden walls! Ok, Prince was simply "Music", how can one man have this much music inside them and that is always trying to get out and be herd. This is so amazing...all I can say is "WOW"

It seems many are interested in having material in the Vault released (including me). So with that, are there items that should not be released? For example, the album, Happy Tears.

As I am very curious about the recordings and would like to hear what I can, I feel that this album should remain unreleased for respect not only to Prince, but Mayte and their son.

"This guy" worked at WB for 12 years, most of which I served as Exec. VP/GM, Jazz. I have also worked on many catalog reissues, including the release of preivously unavailable material from legendary artists (Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Bill Evans, Count Basie, etc.). I simply told a story about one of my experiences with Prince. In terms of my position about the release of material, I feel strongly that if an artist isn't clear about wanting stuff released, it's very important to tread lightly and rely on those with the most direct knowledge of the artist's wishes. For example, Prince was very clear to me that the track "Can I Play With You" was not to be released. Yet many people continue to share bootlegs of it and share videos and SoundCloud streams of it. If Prince were alive, it is VERY safe to say that he would send out takedown notices. His legacy needs to be based on HIS vision, respecting his wishes as much as possible.

Yes but 'his vision' at which point in his career? If you watch the video from a few posts earlier, I think that standpoint changed over time. Lots of things got in the way - in particular, organized religion!!! So HIS VISION is subjective to various points in his career

Well, Prince said in 1998 in Guitar World magazine that he was planning on releasing the music with Miles Davis at some point but he wanted to wait until the spirit moves him, when it felt right, like release it on Miles Davis' birthday or his death day when he was "released from the cycle of life and death". Prince was very radical in his opinions and his ideas, a very original thinker. So based on HIS vision, the music with Miles Davis should be released either on Miles Davis' birthday May 26 or his death day September 28.

Prince sound engineer reflects on recording some of his biggest hits

Arts & Culture Apr 22, 2016

Susan Rogers worked as a sound engineer for Prince from 1985-89 when she recorded classic albums like "Purple Rain" and "Sign of the Times." She is now an associate professor in the Music Production and Engineering Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with her.

Susan Rogers: I don't know, but I would hope that someone who - his attorney, maybe, who was in charge of his affairs - will go through and assign that material to other musicians; musicians he worked with, to finish up and release. I would hope that the material from the 80s would get put in the hands of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman and Bobby Z., the musicians who were part of the original Revolution so we could finish that stuff up the way he liked it, and put it out there.

so agree. Melvoin is a good writer. His music needs to be in the best hands.

Matt,

Expanding upon your FB post, I think it's important to keep in mind that, at the time of recording, there was an immense amount of material that Prince wanted to release (both audio and video) that was rejected/prohibited by WB. As you know, during the 1980s and early 1990s, WB was constantly concerned that Prince was oversaturating the market with releases, while Prince wanted to get as much music out as he could. That is why, for example, SOTT ended up a double LP, and why Crystal Ball and Dream Factory before it didn't get released. Similarly, there were many tracks that didn't fit with the theme of a particular album, but that Prince would have released as B-sides if he'd been able to put out more 12" releases. (In some cases, he also "saved" tracks in hopes that another album would come along later where the material would "fit".)

At the same time, Prince also hated to be wedded to the past - he wanted the focus of the public to be on his current work, and the last thing he wanted was to release old material during his lifetime just for people to buy that and ignore his current releases. Similarly, he didn't want to release a lot of live audio and video if that would compete with selling tickets to current/future live shows.

Given all of the foregoing, I think it's fair to say that, to the best of our good faith knowledge, Prince would want material from the Vault extensively released. He was very proud of the unreleased recordings, and the archives of live shows. He just didn't want it released in competition to his current work. He made many statements over the years that made pretty clear he wanted stuff to see the light of day.

If he didn't want this stuff released, IMHO he would have left clear instructions to destroy it in his will, or or he would have destroyed it. At this point, there are no further "new" albums or live shows to compete with, so I think he'd want his legacy honored by material being released in a way that enhanced his legacy. Just my $0.02.
