How do you feel about Youtube videos being shared?

I am torn.

One one hand I understand the desire to enjoy these videos, to spread the word about the genius of Prince and to celebrate his art.

On th other I am uneasy given Prince's beliefs in control of his art and that it is quite possible some people are monetizing these videos and making money from Prince's work. Whilst I understand it will be up to his estate owners to determine the future of his work, the thought that some are making money from this just leave me feeling uneasy.

How do you feel about this?

Love it. One of my major frustrations with Prince was not releasing his own stuff. I think we all thought he would have to die to make it happen, and it's becoming true...for now anyways.

Not that it was worth it....but it's the ONLY upside I can see

first time i have seen many old and beloved videos, give' new fans a chance to hear his music.

but... i doubt it will last and worry his lasting legacy will be take down notices ti the very fans he tried to support.

It's all about control, same on this site, people ask legit questions and there threads are deleted. It's okay to speculate on drugs but not the other rumour ?

this is 2016 to not be able to discuss certain things is just wrong. If it turns out ot be true then this attitude is going to increase the stigma, both around this topic and prince himself.

meh....

I was always one of the ones who felt his stance was wrong on this one but I respected his position as the creator of the work to determine how it should be displayed.

Now that he's gone I'm not sure the argument means anything anymore.

His music/image/art should now be available to all.

I just wish there was a way to get it all out there without a bunch of record compaines and such making a profit from it.

I totally understand your view. It's wholly tragic but a lot of people are getting to experience Prince. I'm just uneasy about people making £2-3000 per video from it, not sure why it bothers me but it does. Hopefully the estate owners will make their views clear in the course of time.

^This. They probably gonna be taken down soon so I just enjoy clicking through´em. It´s fun to see some old or new livecuts. There´s a full 2011 show on the tube I didn´t know. I saw Darling Nikki, which I haven´t seen in 20 years. I think it´s cool.

On soundcloud there´s some amazing stuff, too.

i'm pretty sure they wont make near that amount now, if any money at all. I make music and put the video's on youtube. One of my tracks, must have a similar beat to a dutch artist, the software picked it up and now all earnings go straight to them. Even tho its not there track in any shape or form. It's an automatic thing. So i doubt any one will get much.

I know this is not really how he wanted things while he was here, but I think he may not have a problem when he's gone. I am happy that people who are casual fans will be able to hear his work. I don't have a problem myself even sharing the youtubes, etc beause I am not a downloader I just like to listen and over the years I have purchased so much of his music I'm cool with doing that. Sharing enjoy. So sad..sad

I don't know. I haven't dared or been able to go there yet and don't know when I will. I am just listening to PP'sOW, AOA, watched and recorded CNN & editing to distract or kill time. Still too much in shock I suppose. Don't really want to share with the world yet and youtube feels too worldy and un-Prince.

.

But I understand for all those fans who haven't been around for many years, that they will need something to hold onto to deal with such a world loss. I know it helped me with MJ when I was just in that position. It was like a re-living of past memories and something tangible to hold onto when something/someone you had forgotten slipped by without you having appreciated it enough. But right now, with Prince, I don't want to go there, knowing the background.

Let people make money. So what? Prince was rich. His family is now rich. No need to hog every penny.

Prince was wrong about youtube.

I loved that. There´s no bigger sign of respect than the Boss playing your song.

And for the reality-part: I think it makes it easier. Just saw an acoustic version of ´Cream´, where he´s screwing around with the audience when they fail to sing with him. Made me smile. Just listening to some records can´t do that. He wanted to be seen as a performer, and since this is the only way left to see him perform, I´d say he´d be fine with it.

I was watching it and my lady came in and said 'i have been keeping this a surprise, but this might help cheer you up, I got us two tickets to see bruce springsteen in june'

it really did, awesome the boss !

then i noticed someone has uploaded the whole of the lovesexy concert, so i put that on.

Snare drum pounds on the two and four, and i burst into tears again. Had to put it of.

I have been watching vids all morning and actually watched it last night, but something just went ping inside. God damn grief cycle sad

I just made a thread and included two videos in it.. umm im not sure if I was allowed to do such thing. Anyway, the thread got locked and I want to say im sorry if it offended anyone that I shared some Prince live perfomances. Or maybe it got locked cuz there's been many a topic on it already. Idk.

Anyway, to answer ur question, no I think it's wonderful that Prince videos are YT at this time, when we all need to reminisce on how great of an artist he really was. They should've been on YT this whole time, but whatever...

Prince was not right about denying access to uncontrolled recordings/videos of him or his music.

So I think it's great to see them flowing in.

Let it flow.

I don't know how to feel about it. On one hand I'm glad because new people will be able to find his legacy and probably fall in love with his work. Some of us are finally able to watch videos we haven't enjoyed in ages and that keep his memory alive... On the other hand, knowing that this is happening just because he's gone and it's probably something he wouldn't be happy about, makes me upset and sad.

I hope the people in charge of all the legal stuff now that's he's not here will be smart and will come to good terms with this. I want to be able to stream his music, watch his videos and show his music with my friends, I don't want that becoming a bad thing though

Mtv briefly had the incredible Sign O the Times/Play in the Sunshine '87 awards performance up on their site yesterday (down now) and I was thinking how great it will be for the new generations to be able to experience and appreciate. Hope all involved can work out something moving forward so that his legacy is legitimately available.

A way to share Prince's music easily? How awful. We should hide it away in our troves - never to be shared again.

My first post here in a long time and first let me say: chin up folks, I've been nearly dehydrated the first day or 2 after the news and still cn't believe my hero has gone, but clichéd as it is, the music will carry him on forever, he's made his mark and we're all forever changed.

That is why I am in full agreeance to his material rocking up online. Let the world finally understand why we few (hundreds of thousands) bored the living daylights out of our family and friends as to why he was so special in our lives and let many discover a man who had kept out of the limelight and godawful charts for such a long time and hopefully realise what state the current industry is in (That of course being my opinion)

First and foremost, get some of his funky tracks on loop and guarantee that frown will turn upside down. It did for me!

There are so many videos, mopst of them actually i've never seen: one thing is for dure he wasn't good makin videos, his videos are quiet cheesy and not good. But i don't know it just doesn't feel right, when he was alive he didn't allow his material to be in youtube and now all of a sudden, within a couple of days since his passing... it feels a little wrong.
