The 'new' fans

Recalling all the new fans who jumped on the MJ bandwagon in '09, I'm seeing Prince videos on Youtube with comments by 9-year olds expressing love for this new music they just discovered. I don't even know how that makes me feel lol

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

It sounds cute but it's weird too when imagining yourself at that age at a time Prince had this song, video or album out and for them Prince is not here . Does that sound about right?

exactly. It's a completely different ballpark. These kids are going to go into Prince's body of work with probably their first memory of him being a deceased man. Wow.

Just because some people stuck around during a low period doesn't negate Prince has always been one of the world's biggest stars. It might've felt cute that you were the only one in your area with a copy of Rainbow Children, but that doesn't rip Purple Rain out of people's hearts and minds.

Celebrate the fact that people are giving this man love. Prince did not die a tragic figure - he died whilst being the king of the hill. Heads SHOULD be turning for him.

True. It's amazing to see the love on TV/social media

i think its cool to gain new fans, but it's a shame it takes this type of publicity to get the attention he has always deserved, he could have done that himself if he had the inclination.

I have more of a problem with how EVERYONE is suddenly the greatest fan that ever lived, all come out of the woodwork

I think he was loved and appreciated when he was alive. His concerts were almost always sold out. Other celebrities would gush over his appearances at awards shows. He would get some kind of award or honor quite frequently. His superbowl performance was hailed as one of if not the best performance of all. His recent album sales weren't great because of lack of promotion.

Me too , it was the same with David Bowie , Michael Jackson , Amy Winehouse.

Oh well. People need to feel part of the conversation. If you know yourself and you know P, what does it matter?

I've been struggling with this myself. I guess it doesn't matter but I find it sad how insincere and shallow people are.

People don't want to be left out of anything- even if that thing is grief.

It'll move on in a week or two. I just think it's sad people who used to say he was a 'weirdo' who hadn't made a good song for 20 years are now telling me how much they love him. For a bit.

It's their loss though. If you truly care about something you experience so much more.

One of the things that has made me smile today is the thought of younger fans discovering, song after song, album after ablum, further down the purple rabbit hole.

There are people out there only now just discovering what will become the soundtrack to the most important moments of there lives. Many many new artists years from now will be heavily influenced by the music they discover now.

Alll of that makes me happy, i just wish more of it was available on youtube for them to find.

I am having a real bitter sweet moment at seeing clips on youtube that i have not seen in twenty years.

One youtube commenter said his teacher told him Prince could make a guitar cry. He looked up him on youtube and was blown away and wanted to find out more about. There are a lot of young people who just don't know who he is.

Its criminal that someone so significant and influential goes un-noticed. It takes his death before mainstream will give him airtime, wtf is up with that, then, for example, radio 1 (in uk) decide to tell everyone how amazing he WAS and what huge fans all the regular djs are! Strange how this slipped their minds before 'the big event'

I just look at it like this - I was lucky to be around for some of the best (and worst) moments of Prince's career. It was like the longest, most tense sports game ever.

If someone else can now see the greatness that was, hell, bring it on. I would love to geek out about concerts again with new, fresh opinions. If they stop caring eventually, great - more for me. But for the moment, I gotta bask in the love I've had for decades.

I wonder if young kids will be like I was at 8: "Wait, he's a pocket full of horses? How do they fit?"

I took me few years to figure it out.
