Why we loved Prince so much

I wonder if Prince really grasped how much people loved him. Not just our love for his music but our love for HIM the man. Of corse I didn't know him but like I explained to my daughter when she said, mom, why are you so upset?, you didn't even know him, I told her, When you love someone's music so deeply for so long through all the moments of you life they become a friend to you.
When the moment of your life are accompanied by a persons music they become the third Person in the car on a road trip with your friends. The person that listens when your heart is broken. The person to hold your hand after a funeral. The person to share your joy. The person to pick you up when you're down. Music is a very powerful thing and a very good friend.

I'm sure he felt the vibes of our love, but it's tricky because if he heard it out loud it would just sound crazy. To tell some one you don't even know I love you, I have loved you forever, you have no idea what you mean to me, I love you so much... That sounds crazy right? But that's we feel and I'm thankful I got to feel this way.

Well said. With our interactions with people in our lives, we choose how much to let them into our world. But with music and its emotional palette, there is a sort of safety so we can let it reach our innermost core. As you say, Prince's music has been a soundtrack to so many important moments in our lives, and the sheer breadth of his catalogue means that there was so many songs that could serve as a conduit to all sorts of feelings.

Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

I was thinking that recorded audio and video is only 100-200 years old and people evolved for millions of years without it. So if you hear someone talking or singing to you, it is personal. And the same with watching a video of them.

Prince sang like an angel to all of us and made us happy and filled us with joy and helped us when we were sad, etc. We did know the most beautiful side of him, even though may not have "met" him in person. So of course we are affected by him and feel very close to him.

But yes I wish he could have been around to see this outpouring of love for him, but he did get a lot during his life as so many people adored him. You could just feel the love pouring out at the recent Atlanta shows. I would look at the crowd and get choked up because of all the love in the room and Prince felt it.

Yes to all of this.

Prince gave me a soundtrack for most of my lifetime and it was much more than that. His music kept me alive in dark times. His lyrics and career gave me a sense of purpose, contributed to bring spirituality and faith into my life, taught me about the necessity for idiosyncracy and stubborness and so many other things when it comes to being an artist, taught me what good sex was and so much more... I was only 12 when his work came into my life, a child, and it shaped me deeply as I grew.

I've read so much about him, I've listened so much to his music. I really don't have this relationship with any other artist or their work but Prince, I didn't know him but he was part of my life, an imaginary friend or, more accurately, mentor. I had the deepest respect for that man and as much love as u can have for someone u don't know.

P's music to us was pure escapism. It was always (and still is) there for us...going to school, coming home from a bad day at work, going to a party, friendship, first relationship, bad breakup, working out, feeling good or bad... The music spoke to us and almost captured every mood we could feel. As it's already been said, the music was our soundtrack.

For me it was not just about the music (although that was the single biggest thing). It was also...

- The style and clothes
- The design of the stage shows
- The videos and films
- The side projects and protégés
- how he opened me up to other musical genres
- The persona (one of the last inaccessible enigma rock stars)

But actually most of all (apart from the music)

- His lovesexy spirituality before becoming a JW with his acceptance of all regardless of race, belief or sexuality

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.
