The Purple One’s illustrious career. Consequently, The Very Best of Prince (Warner Bros.) has soared to #1 chart honors, scoring 96k on the HITS Album Sales Chart and 172k on the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart.

Purple Rain finishes the week at #2 with 55k for Warner Bros., while The Hits and B-Sides moves into the Top 10 at #7 with 22k and 1999 hits #14 with 12k. On the chart, but outside the Top 15, there’s Ultimate: Prince (#23) and Sign O’ the Times (#37). Adding up The Purple One’s top-selling titles, fans snapped up more than 200k albums and north of 900k tracks, and all of this happened in less than 24 hours. Talk about around the world in a day…

That's great (and expected) for Prince to have the number #1 and #2 albums in the country again. I wonder where is the money going? Warner Bros? The Prince estate (If it exists)? Tidal? If they're gonna release that long planned 30 anniversary remastered version of Purple Rain, I think they should do it soon, while the demand is at it's highest.

I think we are going to get a lot of stuff very soon. Let's just hope that whoever handles it does justice to this amazing legacy.

Just goes to show you how meaningless sales charts are. I think Prince would be irritated and amused.

Wow, these people buying best-of collections instead of SOTT, Parade, or any number of other classics are really missing out.

don't forget these are the sales that counted towards this week charts in less than 24 hours... so in less than 24 hours it's reported he sold over 200k albums and over 900k single tracks... wait till the next week when we can have a full weeks calculation...

Having lost this musical conduit to the heavens and the finality of it, is the true injury of his death. That is why this is so hard for so many people all over the world. Who is gonna sing and God shows up through the speakers in your living room now? Take it all back, all the sales, the purple all over the world, the tears, the thousands upon thousands all over the world that gathered together just to sing his songs, take it all back and give me my obscure, recluse, not as successful as he once was but breathing Prince. The man who made music for the sole purpose of entering my mind and heart to tell me I was not alone.

The network I'm talking about is a haven for hardcore music fans and has pretty much been left alone by labels and lawyers for the most part of its existence, probably because it has managed to remain confidential enough.

Knowing that the world is again buying his music at this pace helps soothe the painful experience.

When I compare this to what happened when MJ died, it strikes me that MJ's music was very well-known overall, but that most of Prince's music is unknown by the masses. given the amount of music he released and of course what has not been released.

His body of work has got to be one of the most valuable around, the possibilities are pretty mind boggling.

I don´t like those Hit Compilations with all the edited and cut off single versions. But people listen to his music again. That´s cool. He´d like that.

We should petition Warner Bros (et al.) to give the profits from all the increased sales to charity.

It doesn't seem right for anyone to be profiting because someone died.

in one days sales only, he has sold more albums than the last 10 years of his career.

his total sales for ONE DAY in the U.S. is estimated at over 1 million including albums and tracks.

in the U.K. it's over the 500k mark.

He knew, that's why he could schedule a show a week before playing it, order people to clear clubs, meet silly requests and film documentaries for him.

On one hand, it's sick that so many people rushed to buy records just to capitalize on dead celebrity trendiness, but on the other hand, that gaggle of wannabe fans now have these great records. That kid that only uses Spotify or buys the occasional single might have just been introduced to the album format. All the people that just bought Dirty Mind or Around the World in a Day in a rush to catch the bandwagon might be pleasantly surprised by what they hear. Prince's music holds up better than any of his contemporaries.

Production of what exactly? Certainly the Very Best Of... and Purple Rain I suppose but I wonder if out of print titles will receive some love?

Just letting you know, so far the U.S. and U.K. sales has Prince selling over 1 million albums alone in just 2 days!!

Will update you on the WORLD CHARTS later this week when the number's come in.

I'm so hapy the world is PAYING homage to our Prince - whose side we never left. Its a sad way for this to happen, but in a way, Prince has gotten out of his own way. The world can now appreciate him in the manner in which he deserves.

When you think about it, Princes need for control was necessary, and it was his achilles heel.


I said this elsewhere, but he's been set free, to be loved, to be appreciated and to be studied by generations to come.

Since Prince died on April 21, fans have paid tribute to the late legend by purchasing his music in huge quantities.

According to Nielsen Music, Prince’s catalog of albums sold 654,000 copies in the U.S. between April 15 and April 24, while his individual songs sold 2.82 million downloads in that same span of time.

In the week ending April 21, his catalog of albums sold 256,000 — up from only 5,000 the week previous. One can assume most of the 256,000 sales occurred on the final day of the tracking week, after news broke that he died around 12:55 p.m. ET, as fans rushed to digital retailers to buy his music.

As for his song downloads, 1.04 million were sold in the week ending April 21 — up from only 14,000 in the week previous. Again, assume that the bulk of those million downloads were registered on the day of his death, April 21.

As for the days immediately following Prince’s passing, here’s how the sales story unfolded: On Friday, April 22, his albums sold 227,000 while his songs moved 960,000 downloads. On April 23: 113,000 albums and 521,000 songs. And on April 24: 58,000 albums and 301,000 songs.

His biggest selling albums in the April 15-24 frame were The Very Best of Prince(259,000), Purple Rain (152,000) and The Hits/The B-Sides (64,000). In terms of songs, the best sellers were “Purple Rain” (326,000), “When Doves Cry” (246,000) and “Little Red Corvette” (201,000).

As earlier reported, The Very Best of Prince, Purple Rain and The Hits/The B-Sides re-entered the Billboard ...1, 2 and 6, respectively. “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry” and “Little Red Corvette” were the Nos. 1, 4 and 6 ...ling songs of the week ending April 21.
