The Purple One’s illustrious career. Consequently, The Very Best of Prince (Warner Bros.) has soared to #1 chart honors, scoring 96k on the HITS Album Sales Chart and 172k on the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart.

Purple Rain finishes the week at #2 with 55k for Warner Bros., while The Hits and B-Sides moves into the Top 10 at #7 with 22k and 1999 hits #14 with 12k. On the chart, but outside the Top 15, there’s Ultimate: Prince (#23) and Sign O’ the Times (#37). Adding up The Purple One’s top-selling titles, fans snapped up more than 200k albums and north of 900k tracks, and all of this happened in less than 24 hours. Talk about around the world in a day…

That's great (and expected) for Prince to have the number #1 and #2 albums in the country again. I wonder where is the money going? Warner Bros? The Prince estate (If it exists)? Tidal? If they're gonna release that long planned 30 anniversary remastered version of Purple Rain, I think they should do it soon, while the demand is at it's highest.

I think we are going to get a lot of stuff very soon. Let's just hope that whoever handles it does justice to this amazing legacy.

Just goes to show you how meaningless sales charts are. I think Prince would be irritated and amused.

Wow, these people buying best-of collections instead of SOTT, Parade, or any number of other classics are really missing out.

For all the talk here on every recent album release about the lack of album sales or the lack of popularity or the lack of hits or lack of marketing, I'd personally have all this go away if it meant the man was still alive, we all would. We'd trade these sales in a heartbeat just to know he was in Paisley Park thumping his Bible and attempting to convert some poor soul, while having his lawyers search for youtube posts. Because in the end not a bit of it mattered. His lack of sales in the last 20-25 years, didn't matter. His youtube/Internet fight, didn't matter. His religious beliefs, didn't matter. Because all along the History of Prince was already written. He was bigger than all that stuff we yammered on about in forums like this. His music is bigger than his faults as a person or business man. And in the end, not a single person on the planet that loves Prince or respected his work, cares that his last albums sold poorly or that his stature in pop culture seemed to be vastly diminished. Prince was already an ingrained memory in this world's popular culture and none of his failures was ever going to change that. He already owned our hearts and minds. He already owned this space in time. Now that he's gone, we can truly judge how much of that space he indeed owned as he left a huge gaping hole in the atmosphere of this planet that may never be filled by a singular talent again. What is so ironic about it is, Prince thought he was the sum of his wondrous talent. He was so wrong, in what I've seen, the world mourns his death because we all seem to have recognized that if there is a God, he certainly gifted Prince and then gifted Prince to us and then spoke to us through his music. Having lost this musical conduit to the heavens and the finality of it, is the true injury of his death. That is why this is so hard for so many people all over the world. Who is gonna sing and God shows up through the speakers in your living room now? Take it all back, all the sales, the purple all over the world, the tears, the thousands upon thousands all over the world that gathered together just to sing his songs, take it all back and give me my obscure, recluse, not as successful as he once was but breathing Prince. The man who made music for the sole purpose of entering my mind and heart to tell me I was not alone.

You might be lucky Prince isn't here to kick your ass for that

The network I'm talking about is a haven for hardcore music fans and has pretty much been left alone by labels and lawyers for the most part of its existence, probably because it has managed to remain confidential enough.

Knowing that the world is again buying his music at this pace helps soothe the painful experience.

When I compare this to what happened when MJ died, it strikes me that MJ's music was very well-known overall, but that most of Prince's music is unknown by the masses. given the amount of music he released and of course what has not been released.

His body of work has got to be one of the most valuable around, the possibilities are pretty mind boggling.

1. Very Best of

3. Purple Rain

5. Sign o´the Times (Finally!)

7. HnR 2

10. 1999

(14. HnR1, 18. Hits2, 19. Hits1)

Downloads:

1. Very Best of

8. Ultimate

9. Purple Rain

No clue where to find number of sales.

I don´t like those Hit Compilations with all the edited and cut off single versions. But people listen to his music again. That´s cool. He´d like that.

We should petition Warner Bros (et al.) to give the profits from all the increased sales to charity.

It doesn't seem right for anyone to be profiting because someone died.

in one days sales only, he has sold more albums than the last 10 years of his career.

his total sales for ONE DAY in the U.S. is estimated at over 1 million including albums and tracks.

in the U.K. it's over the 500k mark.

On one hand, it's sick that so many people rushed to buy records just to capitalize on dead celebrity trendiness, but on the other hand, that gaggle of wannabe fans now have these great records. That kid that only uses Spotify or buys the occasional single might have just been introduced to the album format. All the people that just bought Dirty Mind or Around the World in a Day in a rush to catch the bandwagon might be pleasantly surprised by what they hear. Prince's music holds up better than any of his contemporaries.

Production of what exactly? Certainly the Very Best Of... and Purple Rain I suppose but I wonder if out of print titles will receive some love?

A PURPLE REIGN AT RETAIL (MONDAY UPDATE)
UPDATE: Prince hit nearly 250k in album sales on Friday and Saturday alone, with The Very Best of Prince approaching 150k. As many as a dozen Prince albums could make our sales chart this week. He's also had 1.5m+ track sales, with "Purple Rain" approaching 200k, "Little Red Corvette" over 100k, and "Let’s Go Crazy," "1999" and "Kiss" all approaching 100k.
Very Best looks on track for a U.K. #1 as well, with His Purpleness' catalog dominating the upper reaches of the chart across the Briny.
Stay tuned for further updates.

I'm so hapy the world is PAYING homage to our Prince - whose side we never left. Its a sad way for this to happen, but in a way, Prince has gotten out of his own way. The world can now appreciate him in the manner in which he deserves.

When you think about it, Princes need for control was necessary, and it was his achilles heel.

I said this elsewhere, but he's been set free, to be loved, to be appreciated and to be studied by generations to come.

I posted this on a standalone thread but better here:

From Billboard:

"Here are some fast facts about Prince on the new Billboard 200 chart:

Prince’s Fifth No. 1 Album: The Very Best of Prince is the Purple One’s fifth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and first since 3121 bowed atop the list on April 8, 2006, spending one week at No. 1. He previously led the chart with the Batman soundtrack (six weeks in 1989), Around the World in a Day (three weeks in 1985) and Purple Rain (24 weeks at No. 1 in 1984 and 1985).

The Very Best of Prince previously debuted and peaked at No. 66 on the Aug. 18, 2001-dated chart.

First Act With Nos. 1 & 2 Albums in More Than 10 Years: Prince is the first act to concurrently chart the Nos. 1 and 2 albums on the Billboard 200 since Nelly’s simultaneously released Suit and Sweat albums debuted at Nos. 1 and 2 on the Oct. 2, 2004-dated chart. Before that, Guns N’ Roses also released a pair of albums at the same time, which also started at Nos. 1 and 2 the same week: Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. They launched at Nos. 2 and 1, respectively on Oct. 5, 1991, and remained in those positions, side-by-side, for a second week (Oct. 12).

Prior to Guns N’ Roses, the feat last occurred on Feb. 2, 1974, when Jim Croce held down the top rungs with You Don’t Mess Around With Jim, and his posthumously released I Got a Name (No. 2). Croce died on Sept. 20, 1973, and subsequently, his You Don’t Mess Around With Jim album (powered by the posthumous Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “Time In a Bottle”) rose to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated Jan. 12, 1974, and spent five weeks at No. 1. His fifth and final studio album, I Got a Name, was released in late 1973, and climbed to its peak of No. 2 on Jan. 26, 1974.

The First Greatest Hits Album at No. 1 since 2007: The Very Best of Prince is the first greatest hits compilation to reach No. 1 in more than nine years. The last traditional hits compilation from an artist to top the tally was The Notorious B.I.G.’s Greatest Hits on March 24, 2007.

Since then, the chart’s top slot has housed a couple albums which are somewhat like a hits package, but aren’t traditional best-of sets. The soundtrack to Michael Jackson’s This Is It debuted at No. 1 on Nov. 14, 2009, and included many of Jackson’s biggest singles, but operated as a soundtrack -- not an authoritative best-of. Then, in 2013, Garth Brooks’ box set Blame It All On My Roots: Five Decades of Influences, hit No. 1. The six-CD package, exclusively sold through Walmart and Sam’s Club, boasted four discs of Brooks covering songs that influenced his career. The remaining two discs were his previously released The Ultimate Hits best-of, first issued as a stand-alone album in 2007.

Purple Rain’s 100th Week on the Chart: The smash soundtrack to Prince’s first film returns to the list for a 100th cumulative week. The album was last on the chart dated Nov. 8, 2014, and has appeared frequently on the chart since 2012. The album’s original chart run lasted from July 14, 1984 (where it debuted at No. 11), through Nov. 23, 1985. The set didn’t return to the list until 2012. (Note: Between May of 1991 and December of 2009, older albums -- referred to as catalog -- were mostly barred from charting on the Billboard 200. In December 2009, the chart began allowing catalog titles back onto the chart, clearing the way for Purple Rain’s return in 2012.)

With 24 weeks at No. 1, Purple Rain is tied with Saturday Night Fever for the third-most weeks at No. 1 by a soundtrack. Ahead of them: only South Pacific (31 weeks at No. 1) and West Side Story (54 weeks).

18 Top 10 Albums: With The Very Best of Prince and The Hits/The B-Sides visiting the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for the first time, Prince ups his total of top 10 albums to 18.

Eight Prince Albums Are on the Billboard 200: In addition to his trio of titles in the top 10, Prince also returns to the chart with 1999 (No. 31), another greatest hits package, Ultimate (No. 61), Sign ‘O’ the Times (No. 95), HITnRun: Phase One (No. 147) and his self-titled album (No. 160)."

All good things they say never last...

Prince Has Sold Nearly 3.5 Million Albums & Songs in U.S. Since His Death

Prince performing on stage during Purple Rain Tour in 1984.
RICHARD E. AARON/REDFERNS

Since Prince died on April 21, fans have paid tribute to the late legend by purchasing his music in huge quantities.

According to Nielsen Music, Prince’s catalog of albums sold 654,000 copies in the U.S. between April 15 and April 24, while his individual songs sold 2.82 million downloads in that same span of time.

In the week ending April 21, his catalog of albums sold 256,000 — up from only 5,000 the week previous. One can assume most of the 256,000 sales occurred on the final day of the tracking week, after news broke that he died around 12:55 p.m. ET, as fans rushed to digital retailers to buy his music.

As for his song downloads, 1.04 million were sold in the week ending April 21 — up from only 14,000 in the week previous. Again, assume that the bulk of those million downloads were registered on the day of his death, April 21.

As for the days immediately following Prince’s passing, here’s how the sales story unfolded: On Friday, April 22, his albums sold 227,000 while his songs moved 960,000 downloads. On April 23: 113,000 albums and 521,000 songs. And on April 24: 58,000 albums and 301,000 songs.

His biggest selling albums in the April 15-24 frame were The Very Best of Prince(259,000), Purple Rain (152,000) and The Hits/The B-Sides (64,000). In terms of songs, the best sellers were “Purple Rain” (326,000), “When Doves Cry” (246,000) and “Little Red Corvette” (201,000).

As earlier reported, The Very Best of Prince, Purple Rain and The Hits/The B-Sides re-entered the Billboard ...1, 2 and 6, respectively. “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry” and “Little Red Corvette” were the Nos. 1, 4 and 6 ...ling songs of the week ending April 21.

Am I just easily pleased or is anyone else impressed by that 5,000 sales figure?

This is great but at the same time,it's kinda annoying how people rush out to buy an artist's music *after* they die.Why weren't they listening, buying and enjoying all this music when Prince was still alive?

You don't just automatically become a fan of everything that is good. Someone might have to show you something for you to "find" it. It's impossible to avoid hearing or reading about him now, as people are forced to hear how their own heroes actually look up to Prince, and that other legends are grieving. There's nothing weird about wanting to understand what all the fuzz is.

I can't find his music anywhere. I was wanting to buy an album out of respect, and have been to like 5 different stores and they're sold out. It's amazing how much of an impact he made on music.
