Hi, I'm new to the forum... been loving the posts. I was a casual fan for years - enjoyed his first hits. Don't know if anyone's from L.A. and remembers KDAY, but they played his music from S&W on.

I got the Prince album (vinyl wheee). Lost track of him when he went in a hip hop direction cuz I'm really into melody, classic jazz, song book, folk. So eclectic musical taste, went through my own phases. From Bill Evans, Michael Henderson & the whole Norman Connors group, Pointer Sisters, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell. Recently learned Prince loved her too. Since he passed I've been watching the youtube clips and his foray into experimental, jazz, back to R&B roots with Musicology & classic blues (his blues are unsurpassed).

And reading the lyrics. Oh, his lyrics! He's an amazing poet, albeit he wrote through the lens of this fame bubble he lived in. Anyway. I miss him but am enjoying his journey and reading how he touched you and all his fans. Wish I'd seen him live, but thankful to see many concerts on Youtube, and bought two concert DVDs on their way. (so not just mooching the free stuff, ha ha)

I do think Prince fulfilled his mission on earth, gave every drop of his gift to us recorded and live. The lyrics of Way Back Home and The Breakdown... he's talking about reunion with his creator (Creator). Think he's made it home.

Where we all go one day.

I keep replaying the nights I went to see Prince live in my mind almost every day now. And one of the things that struck me was that every night - every single one - was one of the best of my life. He turned every night into a party and gave all of himself every single time. He loved the music and respected us as his aficionados (he hated the use of the word "fans").

In reading about his secret donations to Afghan orphans and the less fortunate around the world, in thinking about how much he gave, we lost a monumental talent and a monumental human being. I am eternally grateful for having had the opportunity to see him live and share in his energy.

look at the botom right corner...see the image of DR. Fink? Just above him is Prince! Dressed in all black with a very white face. The cover of ATWIAD has several images of Prince on it... like 5?

In a weird way, I feel like we, the fans who were always there still spinnin' and following Prince, are now sharing one of the most popular, best kept secrets with the rest of the world. Anyway, this is not a void to be filled, but one to learn to live with and I've been finding great, heartbreaking peace and comfort in the jam he did with Macy Gray in 2000 (and yes, Common was there razz). She never really gets into the lyrics for Take Me With U, but she soulfully repeats that line throughout the jam and they end it with her singing these lines from Macy's I Try:

I try to say goodbye and I choke
Try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not here
Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not here

It's impossible to not shed a tear by the end. For me, however, it's cleansing. Therapeutic.

For those not familiar, this is the show I am talking about: hxxps://www.discogs.com/Prince-And-New-Power-GenerationW-Macy-Gray-Cabaret-Metro-2000/release/4011121

I’ve couldn’t get on here until now. I work full time and go to school. I wanted to wait until I had time to reflect on how Prince impacted my life. When he passed way, it just hit me so hard, and a month later it doesn’t feel like it’s getting easier. Classes ended this week, so here goes.

1999 (song)

1982, I was 11. First Prince song I ever heard. I remember seeing the video on MTV, and being mesmerized: it was glamorous, otherworldly, and unlike anything I’d ever seen. The music, the dancing, the clothes all of it was mind melting. I was hooked.

Controversy

This is not about the album but that poster that came with it. Oh. My. God. Prince in the shower with nothing but a speedo in a very Princey pose staring right at you. Now, my Mom hated Prince. She tolerated letting me get his records, but I got a whole lot of “Turn that down!” I had a thing for a while where I kind of taunted my Mom with that poster. She’d come home from work, and now Prince is showering in the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room, the hallway, you name it. “Take that down, and put it on the back of your door!”. I talked with her about this recently, and we laughed about it. It was a weird thing to do, but hey, I was a weird kid.

Purple Rain (movie)

My Mom wouldn't let me see it, something about it being "Inappropriate for my age". Though when I saw it later, you know, she had a point! I do remember it having an influence on me even though I didn’t get to see it back then. I knew a bit about the story from what I’d heard from friends.

What resonated with me the most was how he grew up in an abusive family, but managed to not only persevere and succeeded, but transcend where he came from. It was a powerful message for me. I grew up in a housing project with a single mom, my childhood was difficult.

I was not getting the message that I could succeed at home or anywhere else. I’m grateful I got the message. And yes, I know, I know Purple Rain is loosely to not biographical at all. Though I’ve read accounts that Prince got moved from house to house in the years after his parents divorced, and his Father was very strict and controlling.

Purple Rain (album)

I don’t think I need to testify to the awesome amazingness of this album-I’d been preaching to the choir here! My best friend Dee Dee and I played that album to death when I was around 12-13. Dancing around her tiny bedroom, knowing every word to all the songs, belting it out (badly!). Giggling our way through Darling Nikki as we sang it. I really felt like I was getting away with something whenever I sang that song back then.

Sign o’ the Times (album)

After Around the World in a Day and Parade, I drifted away from Prince for a while. Then, in the early 90’s I met Scott who was a terrible boyfriend but an excellent influence on my musical tastes. “How can you say you’re a Prince fan if you haven’t heard Sign o’ the Times?” he said. Agreed.

This is my favorite album, nothing else even comes close.

Starfish and Coffee

I used to look at being shy and sensitive as a liability and wasted a whole lot of time wanting to be “just like everybody else.” To me, Starfish and Coffee is about being no one but your own damn self, and celebrating it, something Prince did brilliantly. He always was a role model for misfits.

This song is an anthem for self-acceptance and embracing others for who they are:

“If u set your mind free baby, maybe you’d understand.”

If I was your Girlfriend

Now, I don’t want to offend anybody on here, but without this information, the rest of the story has no context. When I was 14, I was sexually abused by a family member. By the time I was in my late teens early 20’s I was really messed up. I didn’t know how to navigate a relationship at all:

I plunged in head first and then bailed out when things started to get real. But I had a sanctuary during all this: dance. At the club, in my room. I felt sensual, and safe.

A whole lot of that was dancing to Prince. In some of his songs, I heard a sexuality that was free, intimate, loving, playful, and full of longing. If I was your Girlfriend has all of these and more.

For me, it was a vision of how things could be different in my life. It was a light in the dark.

Musicology Tour, Seattle, WA. August 30, 2004

The only time I saw him live. Here was an instance in life where all the hype is not only true, but more than I could have ever imagined. He really was all that-I mean I was in the nosebleeds because that’s all I could afford, and it made no difference at all, it was amazing. He was that magnetic a performer. Twelve years later, I recall only snippets of that show. But man, I remember floating out of there after it was over. He was here in Oakland, CA in February for his Piano and a Microphone tour. I was too busy with school and work (well, that and it sold out in minutes.) I’ll go next time he comes to town, I thought. Damn. Even though I didn’t get to see him perform, I find it oddly comforting that he was in my city a couple months before he passed. Like he swung by to say goodbye. Stupid, I know.

Much love, Prince. Thank you for everything you brought to my life. Rest in peace.

Thinking about how Bobby Z had a close call not long ago, it seems strange that Prince's crew from the early days are still pretty much here but their fearless leader is gone... eek

Prince and Mayte performing on stage at Wembley Stadium in London on the 31st July, 1993. (Photo by Jim Steele/Popperfoto/Getty Images)

I was there with 2 of my best friends. Still remember exactly where we were seated. Fantastic show. It was to make up for the Blenheim Palace concert he pulled out from the year before. Awe-inspring. He had 80,000 on their feet for over 2 and a half hours. British dance band opened for him. Luckily I saw him play the smaller Wembley Arena show a couple of months later, which was a real treat. Often feel he peaked in 1993. After that came all the SLAVE stuff and I always felt he and his career were hurt by his fight with Warner (as necessary as it may have been). Prince at his best.

I was at the show too - it was D-Influence who opened for him. And my niece is still pissed at me that I wasn't in Vienna when she was born on August 1st 1993 (even though she was born a month early) because I was travelling to Prince shows in England and the Netherlands.

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Mila J Takes a Drive Through Prince's "Erotic City"
May 26, 2016

As a tribute to the iconic Prince, Los Angeles-based singer Mila J has released a cover of his classic song “Erotic City”.

Prince used her “Blinded” for his song “U Know” from his Art Official Age album, so Mila felt it only right to pay homage to the late icon in her own fashion.

I think it's irrational to blame God for Prince's apparent abuse of prescription pain-killing medication. He had a choice to stay in the hospital for treatment after that near-death experience on the private jet.

wnat makes me miss Prince so much is that he was also a muse for many in the visual arts and music.

His father named him well. and he lived up to his name in the arena of creativity, boldness, courage and talent.

the animators depiction of Prince here is "spot on."

prince was so prolific, worked so hard, played SO hard and so much that honestly I feel the man lived in cat years. he was was a god blessed cyborg, the way he performed. did he ever sleep? he wished he didn't have to sleep.

so by my count, prince was 399 years old.

what a rich life.
