FUNKYNESS

Is 1999/Little Red Corvette still the greatest Prince album 1-2 punch?

1-2 punch here meaning 2 killer tracks on an album that run in succession.

If you mean as opening tracks, then yes, you're right. But U Got the Look-If I Was Your Girlfriend is also pretty strong.

I would have to list SOTT - Play In The Sunshine in there, if we're doing opening tracks. Also deserving a mention...

P Control - Endorphinmachine

I Wanna Be Your Lover - Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad

The Future - Electric Chair

As far as back to back songs, there's a great juxtaposition between "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" & "Adore" rounding out SOTT.

I think the onslaught of "Lovesexy" with its foreplay-esque bravado seguing into "When 2 R In Love" - those two songs seem to answer each other.

And the original sequence of "Old Friends 4r Sale" & "All My Dreams".

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

Let's Go Crazy/Take Me With U is my favorite 1-2. I also like Into the Light/I Will.

For me it's the first 3 tracks on "Parade" that always does it.

"Play in the Sunshine" -> "Housequake," is his best transition between songs, in my opinion. Only "When Doves Cry" into "I Would Die 4 U" surpasses the back-to-back hitmaking of "1999"/"Little Red Corvette," though I prefer the latter duo (to say nothing bad about the former).

I think you are right. 1999 into Little Red Corvette is pretty amazing.

However, my personal favourite is:

The little segue from Play in the Sunshine (both live and on Record) is just beautiful. Really reminds me o fthe first days of being a Prince fan biggrin

I agree...."1999" and "Little Red Corvette" is the strongest opening on a Prince album.I especially like the way the two songs segue into each other. You hear the explosion at the end of "1999" then Prince's falsetto leads you into "Little Red Corvette".

I have always loved Play In The Sunshine & Housequake as well. music

Play sounds so very fresh, a very great "party upbeat song", and Housequake is just dirty funky..

Wow what has happened, today Prince sounds so sterile compared to back then..!

Actually I love every* single note from Sign O The Times. So I could choose a lot of 1-2 punches from this wonderful album.. wink cool

*Ps... Well maybe not Slow Love, this song is the only weak song in there, Altho this is excellent in the movie, there it has a lot more "feeling".

Probably.

An interesting 1-2 punch on a Prince album is I Like it There/Dinner with Delores. No one's mentioned it, yet, but it deserves to be mentioned.

It's one of my favorites!

"My Name is Prince" has been getting rained on around here lately, so I wanted to co-sign on this. Say what you want about Tony M but I enjoyed him on both of these ("My Name is Prince" is the track that made me an 11 year-old Prince fan). I play "Sexy MF" when I DJ - people always like the hip-hop/funk hybrid but are surprised to find out the artist. Ditto for "P Control/Endorphinemachine."

It's a shame the 1-2-3 punch of Girl O'my dreams-can't stop this feeling-we can funk was never officially released.

Le Grind/Cindy C is also a great 1-2 punch.

1999 followed by Little Red Corvette is historically his greatest 1-2 punch on any album of his for what these two songs meant for his career, how many people they reached and the manner they did -- especially when the videos are considered. And both are mesmerizing musical experiences, other songs might grab you more as openers now but I'm willing to bet about 3O % of his fans are composed of people who first knew him through these two songs.

I might agree, I still love the fade-in from a cool song to an even cooler song.

Is this a trick question? Ha, ha!

It's about a girl named Delores, who isn't very classy in Prince's eyes. He also associates his broken relationship with this "trashy" woman to his popularity after the success of Purple Rain("...the bell's just broken since 1984").

The song is a cool little ride, but it's also a short ride as the song is over in less than 3 minutes, I think!

I think "I like It There" sounds like a weak,Lenny Kravitz throwaway.

"Dinner With Delores" is a good song.I love the lyrics.

Good thread topic. It got me to thinking. So not to be picky, but it's well known that MBL was supposed to follow 1999 and the snippet at the end is an 'unseamless'reminder that this 1-2 punch is not the original. It still is arguably the frontrunner though if u measure by the individual impact of them both as stand alone singles that became classic and definitive. Sonic cohesiveness and setting up the rest of the album....? Not so much. For that my vote goes to DM or Controversy. If I HAD to pick, I'm going with DM.
